The Railroad Duel.—Under this
head the Charleston News says a
regular cut throat fight is going ou
between the Georgia Central Rail
road, the Tcup<?sscp, line and the
South Carolina' Railroad. Freights
have been lowered to starvation
prices, and there is no sign of a
truce. It charges! lie Central with
commercing the fight—on which
point opinions may differ, however
—and adds that it is pleasant to
know that the volume of business

Pope was a -man of sense. He
wrote an “Essay on Man,” and the
“Universal Prayer,” besides having
translated Horner. But by Jar the
noblest work of his life was the above
production. It suits our case ex
actly. We had felt uncomfortable
for several days. A sense of loneli
ness and isolation oppressed us. We
know our principles were right, but.
still our conscience was uneasy. We
tried to be serene anti dignified, but
that provoked a grim smile even
lrom ourself. Wc then imagined we
were a martyr to Democratic doc
trines, but no vision of. glory filled
onr soul with ecstacy. We tried a
while to play “Big Ike,” but.that
didn’t pay. We then got mad, and
said something. about voting for
Grant through spfte, but that pro
duced a fuss in the family; and same
thing was remarked about man’s
selling his prosperity to Grant’s kin;
this caused us all to call Grant bad
names and utter a few things not
found in the Lord’s. Prayer. We
then commenced to ! think ’abput hat
weather, and we’ remembered that
Prince Frederick and Princess Nellie
were in Franc", and “Let us ilave
peace” at Long Branch. Then wc f
pronounced a few other tilings that’
do not appear in the Catechism.--
Stfil we felt poorly, and knew that
something was wrong. We read
Greeley’s North Carolina letter and
began to improve. But we had com
mitted ourself against the old white
hatted cuss so often we telf ashamed
to go back on our own record'. A
man’s record is a dangerous thing.
It mates him do a good many things
“just tor grandeur.” It takes a man
of pluck to acknowledge his mistakes
even alter his judgment is convinced.
He likes to find some authority,
some example to excuse or justify 1
him. Precedents are wonderfully
pursuasive things—particularly with
a man who- 1 thiqks he..T>ught to’do
something, but don't know.. now to
do it. Pope—tlie great Pope came
to our relief. We shall jraje., for
