W. E. Rutherford, at the City Stables, has
some fine horses for sale, and in a few weeks
he will have many more. If Voti want a su
perb turnout at reasonable rates, the City
Stables is the place to get it. Saddle and
harness horses to hire at all times.
Chance or Schedule.—See change of
schedule on Atlantic & Gulf Railroad.
How to Remove YVruckles and Delay
their Coming.—It is said to be satisfactorily
demonstrated that every time a wife scolds
her husband she adds a wrinkle to her face.
We hope this announcement will have the
most salutary effect, especially as it is under
stood that every time a wife smiles on her
husband, it will help to remove one of the
old wrinkles. Therefore, if a husband would
encourage his wife to smile on him at morn
ing. nook and night, he should furnish her
with the Monumental Cooking StoTe. for sale
by E. JOHNSON.
Rain.—We have had a little rain this week
—thank the Lqrd for the blessed rain, for it
never, never was needed more.
Et>. J. Henderson.-—This young gentleman
has been quite sick the past week of billious
fever. We iiope to see him out soon.
Married.—Mr. Ab. Cox, one of the clever
salesmen of A. T. Reid & Co., was married
last Thursday night to Miss White. We wish
them a pleasant journey through life.
Steincnger & Engel have speelal arrange
ments with the Western mat-kets that enable
them to sell at low rates. For further par
ticulars inquire at the Upper Flint River
Store.
Don’t forget the Presbyterian Festival at
Rower’s Hall to-night, There will be a splen
did supper given, etc., etc.
The Rankin House —When you go lo the
Columbus Fair stop at the Rankin House.
Frank Golden will see you well taken care
of and all your wants supplied.

particular. Go over and pec their stock and

Handsome MilmneKv Goods.—Mrs. M J.
Reynolds lias one of the best selected stocks
of Millinery goods ever brought to this city.
Her hats and Imnncts arc superb—hut ’tis
useless to say more, for Mrs. Reynold’s
taste is so well known to the people.
A Prima Donna among the Milliners.—
The first opening of New Y'ork Fashions
of the season took place at Mrs. Parsons'
Emporium on the 24th inst., corner Brough
ton and Clay streets.
Her store was crowded with the elite of
the city. Hats and Bonnets were exhibi
ted. These received much praise for their
chaste beauty, and skillful manipulation.
Ladies from the country arc respectfully
invited to call.
Two hundred pieces of dress goads just
opened at the Flint River Stores. Empress
doth, alpaccas. detains, and poplins in all
colors, plaid and striped dress goods, velve
teens and nalours all colors for trimming.
Matrimonial.—The latest figures reveal
the startling fact that at least one dozen mar
riages are jotted down hereabouts for the
month of November. We like .to lu^yr of
such material evidences of improvement to
our city. Our population wifi soon very
naturally increase.
RrNAWAT.—A sandy-haired youth, from
the rural regions, borrowed a new buggy
from oue If his neighbors to come to town in
on Tuesday. He got here safe, hitched his
nag, and went about seeing sights. The nag,
however, being restles and having a mind to
see something of the city also, broke loose
and pulled the buggy up against a tree,
which shocked it very severely, not so much,
however, as it did the youth.
THE PEOPLE'S JEWELRY STORE OF
W. C. Subers
Rev. A. J. Dean and Lady.—We had the
pleasure of meeting this gentleman and his
most inestimable lady at Fort Valley last
week. They were both looking well and
were in fiue health. They contemplate visi
ting Bainbridge soon. We make a nofls - of
this for the benefit of their many friends in
this city. .a-tnf
An Effective Mketinu.—There. _was no
regvtlur services in the Methodist Church
last Sabbath on account of the pastor’s .ab
sence; but, however, at night a prayer meet
ing was held, which was presided over by
Mr. John P. Dickenson, and, we learn, that
it was one of the happiest religious occasions
ever witnessed in Bainbridge.
Stein eager & Engel have just received an
other lot of those justly famous hand-made
boots and shoes, manufactured expressly for
them. We have tested these goods and can
vouch for tlicir durability.
To the Ladies.—Our lady friends had
better send to tlie Democrat office anti get a
number of Peter's Musical Monthly, free of
charge. The music alone is worth in the
stores over §2.00. Only a few left.
Simon A. Wiel is selling blankets at a
very reduced figure in consequence of their
having gotten wet on the occasion of the re
cent fire-. Parties wishing gooddilankcts at
a low price had best call at once.
The Goot> Templars.—Several important
accessions have been made to the ranks of
this noble fraternity recently. We are glad
the Order is progressing.
A Hold Girl Driver.—Mr. W. E. Ruth
erford's little ten-year old gill, Fannie, is cer
tainly a prod igy. We saw her out alone, not
long since, one evening driving one of Ruth
erfords fastest nags, with as much rung Jroiil
os the oldest jockey in the land. She very
frequently drives the hack to (he depot.,
Rutherford should have her drive at tlie Sav
annah Fair.
Yi- hungry souls who long for meat,
Or anything that’s good to eat.

Reef, mutton, pork—all kinds of flesh !
He’ll sell it cheap—ltlcts. per pound

For other parts Bets, will pay;

Magazines.—We have received the At
lanta Medical ami Surgical Journal for Sep
tember. It is a credit to Georgia and the
medical profession.
Arthur’s Lady’s Home Magazine for No
vember is upon our table. This is a very fine
publication which should be secured a place

T. S. Arthur & Sons, Philadelphia, Penn.
The Bainbridgcrs have organized a calico
club. Ben. Russell dotes on bright colored
chintz, and his manly form will hereafter
be draped in an artistic D. Yarden.—Sav-
ani.ah Advertiser.
Our contemporary is awfully mistaken. If
Ben. Russell were to perpetrate such a dia
bolical and high-handed outrage on the ‘kali
kerklub" his "manly form” would be suspen
ded from the first tree, and his ‘‘artistic -D.
Yarden” likewise.
“Forewarned is Forearmed”—See that
Your Scales ark all Right.—Very shortly
a representative of The Democrat will
go to c ery business house, store, shop, or
other plao» j u the city where scales are
used, and Suvject them to a test with the le
gal weights of ihe country, after which a list
of all defaulters will be published.

A HArrV Freedman Judge Farley is a
Mack colored man, who has a little shoe-
shop on Broughton street. He is a happy
fellow—no King upon his throne is happier.
Judge's business is to yatch catfish, play
the fiddle, and make shoes. He is a polite
darkey—treats all with marked respect—is
content with what he has and makes the
host of it. It is a pity that all of the negro
population do not follow' his example,
Don t go to New Y'ork for your guns, pis-
lols, cutlery, hardware, woodware, lamps

just as cheap,
, Mr. Wart has some of those English breech
wading shot guns on hand that the public
•should examine.
The Festival To-night.—Remember—the
Festival for the benefit of the Presbyterian
Church, of this city, takes places at Bower's
Hall to-night. It is to be a handsome nffiiir,
and we have no doubt but that it wiH be well
patronized, Let everybody attend, the young
folks especially.
You will find it to your advantage to get
your plantation supplies, such as bagging,
rope, ties, com, hay, etc., from the Upper
Flint River Store; '

popular traveling agent and salesman of
Messrs. Fowler & Slocumh, of New Y’ork, has

addition to the large staff of clever gentlemen
and obliging salesmen, who are prompt to
serve their numerous customers. Such men

recent visit to Columbus we had the pleas
ure of visiting this vast manufactury of iron
machinery, etc. YVe had no idea that Co

and were surprised. These works furnish
employment for over three hundred men,
experienced mechanics. The officers of the

Golden, Superintendent; and J. .W> ; . Densop,
Secretary and Treasurer, all of whom we rtfet
and found them to be clever and accomplished
gentlemen. Shortly,-we shall have an ad

which will give tt comprehensive idea of the
extent of its manufactures.

weather was so dry, and the ground so
parched, and the dust flew in such clouds,
and everything was so disagreeable that the

pray*d for rain. The rain has come, and
they wish for dry weather, and curse

investigations in this case have occupied the
entire week thus far. YVe learn that a strong
case is being made in favor of Butts and But

will terminate.
