! The Weekly Democrat, RUSSELL & JOKES, Proprietors Ben. E. Russell, - - - Editor. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1872. The President’* Message. The late Mcswge of President Grant to the United States Congress, is a very carefully prepared document, and as a state paper we consider it far more able than his preceding ones. It reads as if written in a spirit «f conciliation, and it leads us into the be lief that the next administration will not be so thoroughly partisan as the present. r We clip the following from the Mes sage in relation to the Ku-Klux, which is extremely liberal, coming, as it does, from the head and front of the Radical party: “Reckless and lawless men, I regret to say, have associated themselves to gether in some localities to deprive other citizens of those rights guaranteed them by the Constitution of the United States, and to that end have committed deeds of blood and violence; but the prosecution and punishment of many of these persons have tended greatly to the repression of such disorders. “I do not doubt that a great many people in all parts of the country favor the full' enjoyment, by all classes of per sons, of those rights to which they are entitled under the constitution and laws, and I invoke the aid and influence of all good citizens to prevent organizations whose objects are, by unlawful means, to interfere with these rights. “I look with confidence to the time, not far distant, when the obvious ad vantage of order and peace will induce an abandonment of all combrnwAtCus prohibited by the acts^gfeffbd to, and when it wihjie fretessary to carry on prosQCJitiTms from the lawless doings of such' combinations. “Applications have been made to me to pardon persons convicted of a viola tion of said acts, upon the ground that clemency in such cases would tend to tranquilizc the public mind and test the virtue of that policy. I am disposed, as far as my sense of justice will permit, to give these applications a favorable consideration; but any action thereon is not to be construed as indicating any change in my determination to enforce, with rigor, such acts, so long as the con spiracies and combinations therein nam ed, disturb the peace of the country. “It is much to be regretted, and is regretted by no one more than myself, that a necessity has ever existed to ex ecute the enforcement act. No one can desire more than I, that the necessity of again applying it may never be de manded.” In a letter to the Hon. Mason W. Tappan; dated November 8, one of the very last that Mr. Greeley wrote, he ex presses great gratitude to Mr. Tappan for going into the recent contest in his behalf with such zeal, and says in his gravely jocular manner, “I have been so bitterly assailed that I hardly know whether I was running for the Presi dency or for the penitentiary.” Mr. Greeley thus speaks of the death of his wife: “In the darkest hour my long- suffering wife left; not too soon, as she had suffered too deeply and long. I laid her in the grave with hard, dry eyes.— Well, I am used up, I have slept little for weeks, and my eyes are hard to close, while they soon open again.” The Elbcrton Gazette announces the death of Mrs. Manly, aged 114 years, and says: At the time of her death she was in the neighborhood of one hundred and fourteen years old. She has been in very bad health for several years, not afflicted with any disease, but the sands of life running low—the machinery of the body simply worn out, leaving her a breathing skeleton. She has two or three children living, the youngest be- : ing not less than eighty years old. For Tax Collector. We arc requested to announce the name of Capt. J. T. WIMBKRLEY ns an Independent Candidate for Tax Collector of Decatur county, at the ensuing January election ; and asks the votes of all classes. [tde For Justice of the Peace.
