To ITS ifoi'or me Mayor., ond Board of
Aldermen; ’
As this iB.ftie last meeting of the
present Board pf which we are members,
we deem it ptoper to make a report of
some of the operations of -your eommit-
. ^ It had
been intended by fliis c.onmiittee, with
tlte sanction of the fellow members s>f
the board, to have set aside from the
revenues of the current year a fund
which should have beep <1 aueleus of a
shilling fund for the- purpose of ulti-,
matefc retiring the -bonded debt of the'
city (§50,000.) This, owing to tlie de
falcation of an officer of the city, has
been found impracticable, as to have
done so would have increased to feoo-
greatTarf j‘xtenlA|lV! burthen of tax pay
ers; but we would respectfully suggest
to.Llm incoiuiug aduiiuistratiun the-pro-
prTery*of taking suitable steps for retir
ing these bonds during the year, as we
been credibly informefijfHliat the
present holders of these obligations of

at a considerable dipeqnnt- for. ready
money; -and we believe that by a vigor

or near par, letting them carry a higher
rate of interest;" either of which plans
w-oyld-he a considerable saving’ to the_
city in interest, as well as principal; be
sides postponing to a later day the pay
ment of the principal; the bonds now
outstanding being due. July 1st, 1877.
AYe are thankful that we are able to
say that the interest coupons upon our
bonds have all been paid to date, and^
that there is little, or no ' ftbrttiilgf debt
due by the city, all of its obligations'
having been met during the year, tvitli
scarcely an exception, promptly; thus-
keeping its credit unimpaired to this
tim?. For the balance dne by the
Treasurer, and the rest of undue taxes
yet m arrears, we refer to- the hooks of
the Clerk aud Treasurer.
AVe’ have, b£ yefur directions, con
structed during the year, a Powder
Magazine, which is self-supporting and
wh’ich we believe is a benefit *0 tlig.city
by lessening the danger of fire. There
are now extant and falling duei next fall
two notes for §154.35.. (S. S. -Mann),
nnd*§5A25 (T/j. Jeter), given by the
Mayor for purchase of the extension

I. Robison, A^Iermen. The present
worthy iucamhent, Mayor Jones, ad
ministered the oath of offiee to hhs suc
cessor, Lewis, who then swore in the
new aldermen. 'The new board then
went into secret session’for the purpose
of electing, officers, requesting the mim-i
erous eitjzens present- to retire, who had
assembled to wituess the inauguration
and election. Some spectators did not
relish the idea of being excluded £om
the Hall, they being decidedly, of the
opinion that as citizens' they had the-
right to wituess t'ne entire hill of the
evening. It. was rather a novel proceed
ing. There being 'a host of candidates
for- the offices to he filled, and the board
bgrng desirous of acting untrammeled
by their presence, for the good of the
city, no doubt prompted the action thns
taken.
The officers elected were: For Mar
shall, P. Collier; for Deputy Marshall,
Henry Smart; for Treasurer, T. J. Bru
ton; for Clerk, G. TV. Pearce. The
board reduced the' salary of Marshall
and his Deputy §1(10 each.
