Our Beautiful City.—Yes, in
deed, thrice beautiful, made so by the
balmy breath of the First Season of the
year. Spring certainly clothes Bain
bridge in that richest and purest of her
-verdure. Who can look at the noble old
oaks, and theifsmaller offspring, which
decorate our city, without feeling a love
of the beautiful P
We cannot look at our unsurpassed
shades, without thinking that they were
like those our great Stonewall Jackson
had in his imagination, which' lined the
bank of some silent placid river, per
haps like our own Thronateeska, when
in his dying moments he murmured.
“Let us cross over, and rest under the'
shade df the trees.”
We ere happy to eee then reunions

An Acknowledged Success.—
When the first experiment was made
by the Babcock Fire Extinguisher in
this city, some weeks ago, the skeptical
portion of our community decided that
the test was not a fair one in conse
quence of their being a head left in
etch barrel of which the fire was made.
A test was made, however, with the
Babcock Extinguisher in possession of
the editor of the Democrat, last Thurs
day evening. A large pile of lard, ker
osene and flour b trrels were piled up
on the square, with all the heads knock
ed out, and filled with shavings, which
were well saturated with kerosene oil.
The fire was then lit, and had reached
its greatest heat, when Mr. Jas, Van
Horn proceeded to put it completely out
with the Extinguisher in a Very short
time, and to the complete satisfaction of
all present. There is no doubt but that
this machine will ultimately be intro
duced into every house, worth saving
from fire, in the land. As a protection
of gin houses it will save the planter
thousands of dollars. Mr. Ben E Bus
sell, editor of this paper will act as
agent for Deoatur county for the pres
ent, at whose office one of the machines
can be Seen and examined.
grasa-hoppm*. In this he sows the
eeed of disappointment, aa he calculates
to grow two hundred and l^fty to the
vine, with an avenge weight of one
hundred and fifty pounds avoirdupois,
and to contain each, ten gallons of
strained juice; and solid mast enough
to satisfy the cravings of a family of
the newly enfranchised. He insists
that, this vegetable must be stuck like
English peas, that the vines must not
be allowed to run on the gronnd. and
that meal sacks should be suspended fpr
the fruit to grow in, aud when ripe,
pluck the melon, throw the bag and con
tents on the shoulder and call friends
together, to rejoice over the fruitful re
sult of scie'nce. Medic us.

of glasses were drank, and every

Apalachicola RevjdiYus.—H.
G. Tqwnsend of Apalachicola, writes
the Floridian as follows :
Her population within the last few
years lias rapidly increased, and now
numbers as many as it did lh its pal
miest days before the war; and
steady improvement is evidenced by
her busy workmen and the continued
opening of new stores. Freight fa
cilities between her port and New
Orleans are about to be increased by
the purchase of a vessel by a stock
company among her residents. In
creased mail facilities and • an elec
tric telegraph may be mentioned
among the new enterprises now on
foot. A newspaper to be‘called
Apalachicola Times,” as one ol
the results ol her improvement, will
be commenced in about three weeks.
A press and pi’in’ing materials have
been ordered from Philadelphia, Fa.
It is to be a twenty-eight column
weekly, with Dr B. F. Saturnian as
liter, and will be devoted to the
interests of the city.
