The Howard Association of New
Orleans have made public the follow
ing simple rules, prepared by a skill
ful physician of that city, lor the
treatment • f yellow fever. They ap
pear to be so well adapted to the al
leviation of fevers generally ol a bill
ions type, as to justify the opinion
that they might be advantageous
ly followed in this section, as well as
where yellow fever prevails. The
treatment certainly seems to be a
very ratio:.al one for fever in all its
stages, and where is no physician at
hand to take a case in hand, this
course might be followed with good
results:
1. II the patient be taken with fe
ver immediately (one or two hours)
after a meal, give an emetic of mus
tard, salt and warm water, one tea-
spoonful each of former to tumbler j
of last.
2. If thi patient lias eaten more
than three hours previously, give a
dose ol ca-toroil-
N. R.—If the attack commences
with irritable stomach, substitute
a dose of calomel aDd soda for oil, o
grains each for children, 10 grains
each for adults.
3. It the skin is dry, give hot-foot j
baths repeatedly, until perspiration
Is indued.
4. If the skin is very hot. whether
dry or moist, sponge the arms, breast
and kgs under tbe covering with
whisky and water frequently.
The first night of attack give
an injection of 20 drops of laudanum
or Bailey'.- sedative should there be
much restlessness.
6. If the stomach remains irrita
ble, apply mustard plaster: if the
irritability continues apply fly blister.
7. Iftbc- urine is scanty, give water
melon seed tea freely—half a teacup
full every hour. It can be taken ied
if preferr-d.

if hot or painful.
but after porserving fur sometime the
body of an immense whale, entangled
in the cable, was brought to the surface,
when it was found to be firmly secured,
by two and a half turns of the cable im
mediately above the tail. Sharks and
other fi-h had partially eaten th. body,
which w as rapidly dt-comp*'sing, the jaws
falling away on reaching the surface.
The tail, which measured twelve feet
across, was perfect, and covered with
bamaoles at tbe extremities. Apparent
ly, the whale was at the time of entan
glement. using the cable to free itself
from parasites, such as barnacles, which
annoy them very much, and the cable
hanging in a loop over a submarine
precipice, he probably with a flip ot his
; tail twisted it aroud him
; came to an untimely end."
A story is told of a woman who
freely used her tongue to the scan
dal of others, and made confession
to the priest of what she had done,
lie gave her a ripe thistle-top, and
told her to go oat in various direc
tions and scatter the seeds, one bi
one. Wondering at the penance,
she obeyed, and then returned and
told her confessor. To her amaze
ment, lie bade her go back and gath
er the seed; and when she objected
that it would be impossible, he re
plied that it would be still more diff
icult to gather up and destroy a
evil reports which she had circulated
about others.
