CoL John Screven.
■" This distinguished gentleman, alike
ornament to Savannah and the State
of Georgia, was re-elected President of
the Atlantic k Golf Railroad Compa
ny, at the Stockholders’ Meeting in
that city yesterday. '
We trast that he may yet be emin
ently successful in his efforts to extend
the Road to Pollard, Ala.
Journalistic.
The Georgia Forester.—This is
the title of a number one local news
paper, published at Alapaha, on the
Brunswick and Albany Railroad,
Frank V. Evans, late associate editor of
'' the Albany News. Frank is one of the
cleverest and smartest boys in the pro
fession, and “the Forester,” is an hon-
' or to the section in which it is pub
lished.
The Montickllo Constitution. —
This new candidate for public favor is
printed in Monticello, Fla., by Col
F. R. Fildes, late of the Quitman (Ga.
Banner. The Constitution is about
* the neatest printed and most industri-
. oualy edited paper we have ever i
from that State. It is thoroughly
.Democratic, and we believe that under
the able control of Col. Fildes, it will
fill a void of long standing in that Rad
ieal-ridden commonwealth. Success to
t the Constitution.

Hr H-1- Kimball.
As' was stated in our local column yes
terday morning, Mr H. I. Kimball is in
Atlanta. He has returned to Georgii
* after two and a half years absence to
attempt to satisfy public sentiments
that his course in Georgia, however un
unfortunate, was well meant. He profes
s6s to court thorough scrutiny, and to
■ be taady to afford full information in ie-
to aD matters with which he was
r connected.
Mr. Kimball is aware that a wide
spread and deep seated condemnation
* exists against him in Georgia. His vol
untary return to attempt to remove that
condemnation is so much in his favor.
More cannot how be said in favor.
The testimony of Mr. Kimball in re
, gard to the bond transactions was an im
r * portant omission in the work of the bond
committee. Advantage should now be
■ -taken -of his presence here to supply
* that momentous omission. For this pur
pose we submit whether the old com
mittee * should not be immediately
convoked by authority of the Legisla-
; ture. Atlanta Constitution.
Drinking Warm Blood
Mention was made recently of a gen
tleman Jn a very feeble state of health,
who has been for some time at the
Batchers’ Abattoir, in Brighton, for
medical treatment, simply drinking a
half tumblerful of warm blood twice a
day. This coarse the gentleman, Mr. C
H. Stickney, who is willing that his
name shall appear, has followed until a
week, ago, having been there ten weeks,
and daring that time gained ten pounds
in weight, and, to use his own words,
. “My appetite is good; I sleep well and
ffiel like a new man, and I am soon to
commence business again in Boston.”
He also' says that there are ten or twelve
others there, drinking the blood, all of
-i whom are gaming under this treatment.
One gentleman from Boston, a consump
tive, so feeble that it was with dificulty
he could get to tins abattoir, is now able
' to.handle an ax skillfully to ‘knock
'doWti' a bullock.” A lady from tbe city
; vrho has been sick six yean, stricken
with paralysis, is improving wonderfully
. by thia “blood cure.” A gratifying feat
ure of this cun is that it is “without
' money'and without price,” and Mr.
3tiokney speaks in praise of the gentle
men in charge of this establishment, ar.d
.aays ataangen visiting the place will
find courteous treatment.—Boston Jour
nal.
Good Sense ffom the Alabama
Negroes
The Montgomery Advertiser of the
4th says: The negro labor Union Com
pany of Dallas oounty has published an
address, in which there is a good deal of
soand sense. Contrary to the general
rale in such cases, politics is not once
mentioned. The address discourages the
purchase of lands on a long credit; re
commends the strictest economy on the
part of its members, and the hoarding of
a portion of their wages to be applied to
the purchase of a homestead for cash;
discourages foolish expenditures for
whiskey, tobacco and lottery tickets, en
courages the raising of the prime ne
cessities of life at home; and warns
against too great haste to get rich. The
following bit of sensible advice cannot
be too highly praised: When you hire,
be sure you get the price agreed upon,
and then study to protect, to your ut
most, the interest of your employer, and
and if you can make your services worth
to him an hundred fold the amount yon
get, do so. Strive to elevate labor by
being faithful ,sothat he who once em
ploys you will find it to his interest to
retain and trust you.”
‘I and
with-
my Husband can do
out”
Shortly before 6 o’clock last evening
alaboring man, accompanied by bis wife
and six children, entered the Mulberry
street station and asked Captain Clinchy
to give them shelter for the night. Capt.
Clinchy told doorman Burrell to put
them into one of the warm cells on the
first floor. Soon the woman asked to be
allowed to go out and get food for her
children. Seeing how weak she was, Capt.
Clinchy told her to give him the mon
ey and he would send Burrell out. The
woman handed Capt. Clinchy, four cents,
“What,” exclaimed Clinchy, “What
grrt of a supper do. you intend to get
with this?” “Bread, sir.” “Well, you
won't get enoughTor you all for four cents
“That's so, Captain, but I and my bus-
band can do without it.” Handing her
the four cents, Capt. Clinchy, accompa
nied by Burrell, went to a neighboring
baker's and returned with three loaves
some bam and fish, and a subscription
was raised among the men, all of whom
gave their mite to assist the poor ftmily
