THE EFFECT OF HILLS SPEECH
The Noarn^ Winces—Senator Nor
wood.
[From the Macon Telegraph ]
TheCincmhatti (.onmicrcictlxnt o <nr-
Baltimore North American, Plnladel
phia Times, and even the World, and
the New Fork press generally, give the
cold shoulder to Mr. Hill f ()r his late
turning.ofthe tables against therein
the matter of the Audtrsonville horrors
aod Southern cruelty. The truth was
too plainly staled, p it hurt. Hence the
opposition, and the enemies - *’ of Sir.
^1,^1 aro speki "S 8 ^ f *P the argument of
* alyorce, by alleging that the speech
w * 8 a niere . personal affair, designed to
- ^ on 'P as ® election to the United
States Senate in place of Mr. Norwood.
In tJiis, they but follow suit with the
demolished Blaine, who made the above
charge on the floOr of the House. In-
deed the whole North, angry with Mr.
liill, aro seeking to convey the impres
sion that Southern Democrats are
; nLo displeased at his carrying the
£.war 1 into Africa. J °
«■* But let it never be forgotten, that
the eioquent Southron was simply com
batting and refuting the diabolical on
slaught of Blaine The latter was the
aggressor, and though the discussion
might have been in bad taste and ill
advised, the ^ representative of the de-
fuuct Confederacy could not sit with
boded hands and bowed heads while
listening to a trade of abuse and false
hood, which if not rebutted, left 31 r.
Davis and their constituents not a whit
iess culpable than Alcrine pirates.
I hat Southern Democrats have taken
umbrage, however, at the manly and ir
resistible defense of JI r . Hill, is a great
mistake. He is sustained and applaud
ed by nineteen twentieths of our peo-
i an ,r is a £ hustl F joke indeed
when Yankee Radicals threaten to re
print and publish the speech as a cam
paign document. That instrument, like
a two-edged sword, cuts in all direc-
trnns, and will go far to revolutionize
public opinion toward the South with
all candid thinkers, while it cleanses
the bloody shirt which is so persistently
waved, of much of the gore which hith
erto liais hounded on the fanatical rabble.
I hat Mr. Hill is a candidate for
Senatorial honors, certainly has not
authoritatively transpired in Georgia.
The great Commoner lias hardly got
ten warm yet in his seat, and can do
yeoman s service where he is.
Nor Iraye we heard a word ofcom-
. plaint agaiust the watchful, polished
Norwood. One would think that his
great deliverances in the Senate, which
place him on a par with the brightest
intellects iu that body, his unfaltering
devotion to Georgia, bis masterly ar
raignment of Radical usurpations and
enormities, his merciless and scathing
rebukes ot the party which has so long
wronged and oppressed the South, aud
his noble aud courteous bearing as citi
zen, cliristian and statesman, would
disarm all oppositiou to his future con
tinuance in office. But, unfortunately
thgt wet blanket to all real progressand
statesmanship, rotation in office for
rotation sake, has, since the adreut of
small men. growing out of universal
suffrage, become of too frequent appli
cation. In the best days of the govern
ment the thought of ousting a Calhoun, j
Webster, Berrien, Clay, or Benton for !
no fbult, but merely to make way for
new aspirants, would have been viewed I
in the same light as an attempt to strike j
the sub from the firmament.
Unless Mr. Norwood, therefore,!
