reason Why we should give aspirants and

Supply us ugr daily rations for nothing.

NEGRO SPEAKERS’ RAID TO
COME SOUTH TO SPEAK FOR
HAYES-
We karn, says the Cincinnati En
quirer, m a roundabout way, that the
managers of tho Ilayes campaign in
Washington havo furnished money to
^certain colored men who -ha-vo been
hangers on ah at the capitol for several
years past, cud instructed them to go
South and snake speeches for Ilayes
and Wheeler, assure their sable breth
ren of affection of the Radical leaders
for them, anu the intention of the Geu.
era) Government to Send a host of troops
where they can do the most good just
about election time. One of these col
ored‘Orators w a tall, slim, greasy-'ook-
ing. coal black darky by the uame of
l’erry Carson: He ranks as General of
the negro militia in fr.e District of Co
lumbia. He was a few days ago on
the streets of Washington exhibiting a
pile of money which he said bad been
given him by bis white radical breth
ren to pay his expenses on a lecture
tour through South Carolina. His ob
jective point is Hamburg. lie favors
blood for blood, and will tell the negroes
tliat if thev want help he will quarter
his militia and muskets among them.
This fellow Carson is one of tho mo t
illiterate gentlemen in tho country. He
organized the negro voters in Washing
ton city eight or nine years ago when
Savles J. Bowen ran for Mayor, and
the latter, when elected, made him a
special messenger and confidential advi
ser. His word was law among the ne
groes, and to this day he exercises more
control over them than does any mem
ber of his race. The Shepherd ring
was afraid of him, and gave him every
opportunity to -make money easily; and
we believe he succeeded in securing a
snug little sum.
He attended the Cincinnati Conven
tion, and by his blustering aud boasting
disgusted the more intelligent and re
spectable colored men who came here
as delegates. Carson is a fit tool to send
South in the interest of Grant Chan
dler, Morton & Co., and is just the man
to fire the hearts of the negroes and
iufiame the race to acts of violence. It
will be the policy of the Administration
to send several such individuals—
some of them white men with black
hearts—down South to canvass for the
party. An effort will be made to keep
the appointments secret, however, un
til after the election. Numbers of
clerks will also be granted long fur
loughs with salaries to visit their re
spective States abd speak in behalf of
Hayes, Wheeler, and a continuance of
Grantism.
GOV- DREW'S DETERMINATION
The Madison Weirs publishes the follow
ing interview between our candidate for
Governor and Mr. Cheney, as having
taken place a short time since at Talla-
liggpee.
Mr. Cheney remarked: “Mr. Drew,
you will not remove all of us carpet-bag
gers from office, when you get to be Gov
ernor, will you ?”
“ATot only" (replied Mr. Drew,) “will I
remove every mother's soil of you who
has proved unworthy of trust, but as long
ns a scrap of evidence can be found
against you, I do not intend to stop until
the last one of you that ought to be there,
shall be sent to the penitentiary. And I
want you all furthermore to distinctly
understand, that if I am elected Governor,
T do intend that you shall not defraud and
cheat me out e.— MonticeUo (Fla.) Con
stitution.
A negro preacher, in translating to his
hearers the sentence, 'The harvest is over,
the season is ended, and thy soul is not
saved,” put it, ‘De corn has been cribbed,
dere ain’t any more work, and de debbil
is still foolin’ wid dis community.’’
Take your time, Mr. Tiden. A man
.jvho ha^saved to the tax-^iyers of his
Ii§t3te eight millions of dollars need not be
