TM'arroll County Times. CARROLLTON,GA. Apaii. 5, 1872 R SHARPS Fditor. Worth and South lUlhoacb We have had the pleasure during tne past week of meeting in our town, Captain VV. C. Cherrv, an old friend of the writers, who is at present en gaged as con tractor, upon the Rome end of the North and South Railroad. Captain C. being unavoidably detain ed hero for two cr three days, we had the pleasure of several conversations with him in reference to the above en terprise. He speaks encouragingly ot the progress of the work on his end of the line, and thinks by the end of the year, he will have twenty miles completed and ready for the iron. He.has at present about seven miles graded, notwithstanding the bad weather of the past winter, and hav ing .recenily. added considerably to his force, h now making much better progress to an anytime heretofore. 3? rom the Columbus papers, and La Grange Reporter, we are glad to hear that the work is being pushed forward • satisfactorily on that end . It-is thought the grading will be finished to La Grange, some forty odd miles from Columbus by Fall. Ai rangeinents have been made to procure the iron -for the entire route, and we. presume it. will bo laid down as fast as the road is graded. , me rapid Construction of the North & South Railroad since its commence ment does great credit to its managers, and should be a subject of congratula tiop, t o its -stockholders, arrd people along tho line, who are interested in this important enterprise. We hope that portion of our county, which will be interested by this Road, will give every aid in their power when called upon, and that there may be no draw backs to pushing the work, as rapidly through the intermediate section as at the Lome and Columbus ends. • . - —I Trial M- D. YVoox>.—From the Atlanta papers we learn that the De- Kalb Superior Court has been engaged during the past week in the trial of M. D. Wood, charged with the seduc tion of Miss Emma Chi\ers Our readers will itcolkct that W* cd had his trial last Fall and was found guilty. This new trial has been granted in consideration of new evidence, which it established, will probably alter the verdict and sentence of the court.’ The object of the new testimony is to prove that Miss Emma drivers was not a virtuous girl at the time of . the alleged reduction, and const* queutly not a subject of seduction, while the counsel of Wood do not admit any misdemeanors whatever they take the position that it is impossible to seduce any other than a virtuous woman, and that Emma drivers was not such a woman. His trial had not closed, up to the time of our latest in formation, but his friends and counsel were confident it is stated of his acquit tal. \ aldosta has recently bad a fire in which the loss is estimated be tween twelve and fifteen thousand dollars. Said to be the work ot an in cendiary. -—* «»— — In an advertisement of sale cf Unclaimed freight at the Southern Ex press Office at Atlanta, we notice one package, J. N. The editor of the Rome Courier has been prospecting the work being done on the North & South Railroad and speaks encouragingly of the prospect. Rome is trying to get up a meeting of its old citizens Fifty marriages were granted last year by the Ordinary of McDuffie county. Senoia had a Sunday School con vention on Saturday and Sunday last. The West Point News and Opelika, (Alabama) Locomotive ft rfc bragging upon the merits of their respective “ cities.” The West Point Fireman’s Fair has at last been held, and that “city ” now breathes more freely. The Alabama & Georgia Manufact uring Cos., situated seven miles below : West Point, on the Chattahoochee, |an enterprise commenced since the war, has recently declared a dividend of Bpr cent. At a late m&eting Mr. G. H. Huguley, their former president declining to serve longer,on account of infjrririties of age, Mr. W. 11. HHgu- Isy wa3 elected president. The last issue of the News contains a first rate puff of the West Point Pc tnale College. The Griffin Middle Georgian is ad vocating public schools for that city. Mr. J. B. Madison has had a burglary. Df; Pitts grocer is the victim. Amount £oods lost, $409. The Grand Jury of Newton countv have voted against a county court. Interesting religious excrcisc3 still continue at Albany. The Albany news reports that sec tion of the Country flooded by the late rains. Albany wants her police uniformed, and is also thinking about opening the spring campaign of picnics. A newspaper is frequently con • dered a reflex of the morah and in telligence of the community in which it b published. The American Jour nalist on this subject gently remars: When we find that one newspaper writer has published his neighbor as a “ sneak,” a “ skunk,” a “toad,” we know that Journal is yet in its ado lescent period. We know that writer, though he may thrust with a rusty bodkin, cannot weal a flashing scime tar of Damascus steel. We know the society that applauds such utterances is raw and primitive. We smell the prairie-flowers, or rather we see pris maticaily, a phantasmagoria of mias matic swamps, slimy aligators, and coatless men sitting on barrels in corner groceries shaking with the ■hills. HowSciiurz Looks.—AlateWash ngton letter to the New York World draws the following pen portrait 61 he Missouri Senator: Physically he is tall, sinewy, and ean. His physiognomy is Pure Teu tonic. A fair forehead under dark brown, carelessly combed hair; sallow ••keeks ; a sharply cut nose, with deep indentation above flaring nostrils; a oddish mustache and a reddish beard, pretty closely trimmed; a strong jaw, and lips that cat) smile sweetly or curl into a sneer like Mephistiphiles own, oid eyes singularly expressive and >iercing—these are the features of Cail Schurz. The famous Island of Corsica no\V contains three hundred thousand in habitants. Revenge is sweet. A widow won $90,000 from a German gSrhbter at Baden, and a French General, whose hatred of Germany is undying married the avenger of his country, and the $90,000. * An old minister, the other day, ask ed a woman what could be done to induce her husband to attend church. “I dou't know,” she replied, “unless we’re to put a pipe and ajugof whisky in the pew.” An able bodied North Carolina ne gro showed his contempt for cookery by swallowing two dozen eggs, shells and all. and washing them down with a pint of raw whisky. Connecticut should be credited with the laziest fisherman. The individual in question is a “fifteenth amendment,” who tics his fish-line to hie dog, arid when he gets a bite, kick his dog.
