XoaajparUa £puiiua o 1 IJL i*k, t * A foreign Joutiai lately published „ a coav related by Quant de Montbofon, t'lit* faithfai friend of the Emperor N ajoleou - *T know men, t»aid Napole n, ‘‘aud T t» n ymi Jesus is not a man ! The n -of Jeans is a antsteryP which # subsists. by it* own force, and proceeds from a mind which is not a human.— We find in it a ma ked individuality which originated in a train of words and actions unknown before. Jesus borrowed nothing from our knowl edge. •» ma** 'He exhibited in himself it perfect example in his precepts. Jesus is ra*t a philosopher, for his proofs are inirae eles: aod from the first his disciples ad )red him. In fact, learning and philosophy are of dO use to salvation ; and Jesus came into the world to re t eai the laws of the spirit. “Alexander, t'aesa r , Charlemagne, and my-spl£ fonndtd Empires; but on what foundation did we rest our genius ? Upon force. Jesus Christ alone founded his Empire on love ; and at this hour millions of men would die for him. s f it is not a day, nor a battle that achieved the triumph of the Christian religion in the world. No, it was a longer war, a contest of three cpr turies: begun by the Apostles, then continued by the fl<>cd of Christian generations. In this war, if all kings and pi-tentales of the earth were ou one side, or the other, 1 see no other army but a mysteries force, some men pattere d here and there ii a'l parts of the world, and who have no other rallying point than a common faith in the mysteries of the t russ. “I die before my time, and my bodv will be given back to the earth t» be come food for the worms. Such is the fate of him wbo has been calkd the great Napoleon. What abyss between my deep mystery and the eternal king dom of Christ which is so proclaimed, loved and adored, and wh’c! is ex ul ed over the whole earth. Call you this dying? Is it not rather living?” ' *• 40- ' Doomed to Die. With pity at my heart I stood and gazed upon the man befb e me—a mao, a fellow-being, doomed by a merciless court-osnrtial to die; to leave a bright and beautiful world around him, and to be ushered alone into the vnllev of the shadow of death." A noble looking man he was as he stood there unmoved amid the enemies that sur roimded him, and a haughty, hall sad, bail defiant expression rested upon fck handsome, daring face. He was a Union spy, captured in the Confederate lines, and bearing up on his person treasonable papers suf ficient to have condemned a regiment. He had made'a good fight, but was at last overpowered, the papers found upon him, and, alter a speedy trial, was condemned to die. I had formed one of the cGurt-in&r tial, and though I knew that the crime of being a spy * was punishab'e with death, yet I had sought to have him spared. I was young, for it was the first Jew months of our civil war, and I was not as used to de- d* of blood a- I became in alter years; and, besides, tr;e spy was young and handsome, by his deportment evidently a gentk man, and his reckless bravery had won my admiration. Night-fall came upon our camp, and the following morning the spy was to be called out and shot. I- h::d been appointed to take charge of the exeeu tion, and seated in ruy tent, I was thinking—thinking of the unpleasant duty I was to perform on the morrow. “Lieutenarit, a note for vou, sir.” I started as the orderly s voice “broke the stillness of the nigut, and taking the outstretched note, read : Pardon me for disturbino- your clumbers, but as you counnand the detachment that will to-morrow usher my soul into eternity, I would see y- u if your duties as an officer do not ir*ge to the contrary. Hoping you will grant this favor, I remain, with respect Wilbur H\yes. I carefully read the note over twice, and then said to the ocLriy, ** Say that I will come,” A few moments later, aid I stood in the pres* iceof the condemned man. “Mr. Hayes, you sent for me?" * £ I did, Ueutena it; and it was because of your ki ld iess to me daring the trial, and also that I saw in vour eyes pity tor my late.'* “ I do feel for you from my heart I do, a:d sincerely wish I had not the unpleasant duty devolving upon me of ordering your execution to-morrow.” “ I have a favor to ask of yon, sir ; so please order the’ g 1a; and to reui ve Borne distance from the. tent, as it is a confession I wish to make.” 1 gave a command to the guard to retire a few paces, and returning to to the tent. Hayes at once began: “lam do spy, sir; but am con demned upon circumstantial evidence. 1 came into the Confederate line to visit my mother, who lives in the South, although she is Union in her feelings. After a visit to her of a few days, I start and to return, and by the roadside came upon a dying man, clad, as a Confederate soldier. Im agihfc my surprise to recognize in him a it of ol our own army, and also recognizing me, he iiif *md ice that fit had hem wounded niciit be fore, by being fiivd upon by a pferty of Confederate cavalry, aud ridden on until be could go no further. He knew he was to die, and entnistvd to my care the papers be had about him. I watched over the poor fellow until he died, and then huiknvtd out a shah low grave, * fc'm alone in hisg’ory.” # l and j woceeded ou my way. *• i have little mote to S.dd, exi-ej t that I am a Major of cavalry in the United State* Army, and wish that you will lake ray private papers from me after I ans oe; and, ami se. and them to auaddress I will give you. Now this is aTI I a-k. except that you will send me a pen and ink by the orderly when you return. Thus we parted, and finding a scout awaiting me at mv tent upon my ie retnm, I gave him pen, ink and paper ordend him to rule over to the tent w here the doomed man was w ith them and tell the guard to relea-e his hands of the shackles while he wrote, but to keep a close watch upon him. A tew minutes after 1 was startkd by a loud shout, one, two, three shots in rapid succession, and then the rapid rush of hoof by mv quarters. I was just in time io see the scouts horse dash swiftly by, and rccognize by the moonlight, the commanding form of Wilbur Hays, ti e Union spy, in the saddle. Men mounted in hot haste, and a chase commenced, but the daring soldier escaped and thus saved himself trom the death of a spy. Upon inquiry, I learned that w hen the manacles had been removed from hi* wrist, Hayes, watching his oportu nity, with too rapid blows struck the guard and the scout to the groundand springing lightly on the back of the scodt’s horse, rode rapidly away, fol lowed by the shots from the sentinels i t the immediate vicinity— Col. Pren tiss Ingraham , {Confederate.) K-w * in*e .Land will Keep a Cow. On the first dav of June last, writes a con espendeat, 1 commenetd cut ting clover for one -cow confined in a yard enclosed by a high, tight board fence, w T ith a stable attached, in which she had been fed. She had no leed but fiesh clove from the Ist of June to the loth of October, and all t.*ken from one fourth of an acre of ground. She has averaged eighteen quarts of good strained nailk per day, flora which my wife has made tight pounds of butter per week, daring the four ami a half months. The cow i-five years old, and a cross of the Ayershire a..d Durham. She has given more milk, more butter and of a better quality then she lias ever and >ne on pasture. On one eighth of an acre 1 have raised one hundred and fifty bushels of sugar beets and carrots, which, with the two tons of hay, will keep herhandsomely the 1 al ance of the year. The labor of cutting clover foi the icw is kss than driving her three fourths of a mile to pasture. ju the dairy districts the U3UJU esti mate is four acres to the cow, on the bay and pasture system; whereas by soiling and iaising roots five-eight ha of an acre is found to be sufficient. I will state farther, that i believe from nearly thirty \ ears experience that there is no crop so valuable for soiling as clover, no crop so many poi nis of which, ad of equal value for milk and butter can be prod iced from an acre of gron id. Sweet corn is a good crop for late feeding, where clover will not grow, but not profita ble for winter feeding. bool Coffee.
