The Carroll County Times. CARROLLTON, GA. Apail 12,1872 EDWIN R. SHARPE, Editor. Savannah Griffin & Nerth Ala ' ' t) am qT&Liho ad In company with a vre stroll ed out to the work on the above road near this place on last Wednesday evening. We were agreeaably sur prised to find much greater headway made, than we expected to find, otviilg to the bad weather of the past winter, and the short time which has elapsed, since work was commenced at this point. Though the fb7ee'employed is rather small, things indeed are begin ning to look giiite* “raUro'adish,’’ and show evidences that no idle time has been The work is under charge of Mr. James Calan, whom we « > .° should judge from what we saw, un derstands thoroughly his business, and knows how so turn everything to advantage, in' the arduous labor of grading railroads. We congratulate Mil’‘Camp, 1 the contractor, upon secur iiigtLq slices ofsb efficient a gentle man as Air. (?alan, to superintend his work. In a conversation with Mr Calan, he infbrihed us, that in about two weeks he will have one half mile completely graded, and thinks lie will be able to finish the whole contract, of two miles, extending from the Baptist Church to one mile beyond Buffalo Creek, in three or four months. Con sidering the small force under Mr, C., only about forty hands, this is * really encouraging. ’ If the other contrac tors below here, all of Whom have much larger force?, are getting along as expeditiously, and we are glad to state from what we can hear that they are going ahead with a vim, the en tire road from here to Neitnan, will soon be ready for the iron. Altogeth er trie prospect foi* the ear]y comple tion of the S. G. & N. A. R. R. to this place is quite flattering, and there cannot be a reasonable doubt, unless some extraordinary, unforseen acci dent happen?, but what we shall have the pleasure of welcoming the “frbii horse ” int 6 Gayrollton this Fall. Georgia Western Railroad.— , » • J fie managers of the Georgia West ern are in earnest about commencing work at an early day. We notice in the Atlanta papers advertisements for sealed proposals from Contractors. Proposals will be received until May Ist 1872, ahdSvill be' for work from nine to fifteen miles from Atlanta, and for such portions as bidders can com plete by November Ist 1872. Pay ments will he made in cash, with the usual reservation of twenty per cent. All bids will be opened on the 2nd of Itfay, and will be acted upon immedi. ately, the Board of "Directors reserving the right, to* accept or'reject! as they may deem the interest of the Compa ny demand. Press Association.— As the Presi dent of the Georgia Press Asso ciation wishes to know the sense of the press as to the place of the next meeting, we herewith put in out vote for Atlanfa, i £&* But three weeks now remain until the meeting of the Liberal Re publican Convention in Cincinnati. Upon its action depends to some ex tent the programme of the Democrat ic party. Fair Grounds of the In dustrial Association of £>4vannj*h were recently sold, and were bought by Mr. Joseph Liprnan of that city for sl6,‘ 000, subject to a mortgage of $4,000. m- - <i m '► 11 The railroad magnates of the South and IFest liave had a meeting in Atlanta the past week, for the pur pose of discussing railroad topics. Tlje 143 J. issue of the West Point News comes to us full of Boullyjsms. 1 TU* pqitor being absent, Boully is hi pharge of lhe “masjieeu,” and js tun ning it upon thehigh pressure principle. The amount raised at the Firemans Fair at West Point, clear of all ex penses, was S3SQ. " Boully thinks a firm in West Point “are possessed of “remarkable good sense,” because they presented him with a ham. The Methodists of West Point have built and paid for a parsonage, for their pastor. ' '* “ Beautiful child of the dti-1, a pro duction of the earth, a sweet substance grown’ up therefrom 1 ’ is what a senti mental young man in West Point calls his sweet-heart. Boully appeals to the papers through out the South to join him in earnestly calling upon the farmers not to plant all cotton, and closes by saying “ when will they (the farmers) learn that the more cotton they make the poorer they become ?” And we would add, when will those presumptions provincial edit ors learn, that the farmers know more about farming, and what is to their interests, than they (the editors) do ? The editor of the Thomson Journal has been shown a four footed chicken. Cartersville has a headless rooster that neither crows, eats or drinks. So savs the Express. T 1 ie Cartersville Express <fc Stand ard has a Cherokee county depart ment, and from it we get the follow ing items: There are several prominent candi dates in Cherokee for the office of Or dinary. ‘ A respected lady in Cherokee gave, birth to three daughters'at once not long since. r The Covington Enterprise lias a new department called the “Broad ax.” The motto of the editor is: • l gcw to the liie, let chips fall where they will. ” Ancl its object theejitor states, will be to chop incidents into items and not to chop up individuals into atoms. The Enterprise states that several cows and calves have been poisoned recently near Covington by eating the buds of poison ivy. Mr. Thomas Shepperd, an old cit izen of Covington died at that place on the 3rd inst., in the 93rd year of his age. . Ipe Rockmart Reporter reports miningefis in Cedar Town. The Cartersville Vahwert Rail road is again running to Rockmart. The “gay and festive” of Rockmart regale themselves frequently with “tripping the light fantastic toe.” Albany thinks the prospect of her canal and factory “glowing.’’ TJte young ladies of .Albany will hold an election soon, to find out who is the ugliest’young man of that burg. Mr. Wilson Strickland an o(J resi dent of Heard county is dead. A correspondent of the La Grange Reporter urges upon the people of that poiinty to rear a monument to their Confederate dead. The Superior Court of Harris coun ty is in session this week. The Court House yard Franklin has been fixed Up, and the Xc\ys thiuk s it looks better. In speaking of the tardiness of Spring, Barron says he is “scringing ’ for the- brandy crop.” The young ideas of Franklin, inter est themselves, in the highly accom plished gaiiie of mumble peg. Barron says fhecows around Frank lin are “ looking Awfully sorry about it.” We suppose he means the lateness of Spring. And now Barron still continuing his investigations in rural affairs, has been shown a chicken with three legs. The editor of the Ilawkinsville Dis patch is the luckiest editor in the State. W e never pick up a copy of his paper ! but we sec where some body has ,been giving him something. This time it is a hat. One man and his four sons living near each other are subscribers to the Ilawkinsville Dispatch. That’s the way to support a home paper. A huge wild cat has been killed near Ilawkinsville. $0 says the Dis patch. • Mrs. Susan Doster of Wilcox coun ty, Xged eighty years is dead. lhe Queen City Circus will enter tain the lovers ot the saw dust opera of Griffin on the 15th, and Xewpfin on the 17th. • The Middle Georgian reports the affairs of the Griffin & Madison Rail road as progressing finely; says that the contract for grading the next twenty miles of the road has been le( to responsible, parties. - - ‘ 4 The Case of the Rev. Myram Wood. The case of the Rev. Mvran Wood for the seduction of Miss EmmaChiv- j ers, in Rie IX*lvalb Superior Court, that has jiist resulted in the second ! conviction ot the accused, is one of the most reiparable that, in i consid erable legal experience, we have ever known in a court room. A minister of the Gospel, a man of excellent antecedents, long ministry and pure life, with a family, is drag ged before the courts, charged with one of the gravest crimes that such a man could commit. He is accused of the deliberate, systematic and saciili gous ruin of a young girl who had the strongest claim upon his chivalry and rcligibn. The girl is his accuser, and tells a'la!6 of terrible consistency,: backed tip by strong circumstances. His family and many friends be lieve implicitly in’ his innocence. He is cast out from his church and shorn of his ministerial robes. lie is twice convicted and sentenced by the tribu naX of justice. After conviction, he mates a solemn, patient, earnest but iiiiembittered statement, full of chris ti imspirit, firmly asserting his inno cence. II is attorneys seek the high | est court of ll:6 State to reverse the verdict • Thus the matter stands. Is it not remarkable ? If guilty, what a moral monster! Upon the hypothesis of guilt, a blacker fiend don’t exist out of the bad place. It would be hard for the imagination toconcUvpa more cruelly, wicked spirit than this preach er of God’s Gospel. The spectacle of a minister preying upon girlish inno ceirce under the blasphemous prestitu tion of prayer, and then crowding the awful shame of lecherous perjury upon his young victim in a guise of hypo critical sancitity in the very hour of convicted guilt is one of those exhibi- of cool, deliberate' sustained criminality such as rarely falls to his-' tory to recount. Qn (he alternative supposition of his hmccenec-, a more hideous case of persecution, a more touching instance of torturing martyrdom, and a ghast lier example of young female depravity was never recorded in the darkest chronicles ot time. The alternatives are fearful. The mind reels between them. Notwith standing (hf. solemn verdict of the court, and before the last shutting off of the escape from the felon’s doom, 1 the judgment wonders errantly from, the one possibility to the other. A pure and innocent divine dragged cruelly to s liable by the koft hand of pitiless girl hood, and the murdered virtue of young female innocence sa crificed to the lust of a sacriligious minister, prowling in the livery of Heaven, and sliming A ' coiint'eVfeit piety in the very hour of established crime, constitute a picture of painful And 'distracting contrasts. But this is not all. An outraged chinch shivers under the shock. The celestial vocation of God’s ministry suffers. The sensibilities of true Christians every where are lacerated. Is there not more that the Church can do in this matter to solve the mysterious problem of guilt, in view of the solemn asseveration of innocence by the accused and his solemn appeal to the bar of God.— Atlanta Consti tution. Many of flic old, before the war volunteer companies of Georgia, gre reorganising This movement meets with the ajiproval of Govcnor as will be seen by the follow ing from the Secretary of the Exeeu tive Department to Mayor Allen of August a: Executive Department, Ga., Atlanta, March 23, 1872. Mr. J. V. 11. Allen , Aug\i<;ta, Ga: Sir: I am directed by the Govenor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 20th instant, in reference to the organization of volun teer companies in this State, gnd to say while lie observes with pleas ure, not unmixed with pride, the very general interest and desire manifested on this subject in different sections of this State, he sees ho legal difficulty in the way of theifgratification. The Govenor is preparing and sending forward requisitions for arms, etc., and hopes to be able in a short time to fur nish them, at least in limited quanti ties, tp companies that may desire and are ready to receive them. In response to your concluding inquiry, his Excel lency suggests that, if it be desirable, your company, in its reorganization, conform to the regulations of its old ehaiter—which, he doubts not, will be revived by the Legislature at its next session. We suppose the object of the meeting is to receive the reports of the Engineers and order the work to be commenced if the same is approved by them— which they have done. We happen to know something of the ability shown by Major Y\ allace in the selection ot a route, the purchase of a site for de pot, shops, Ac. Major Wallace is ac knowledged to bp one ot the most suc cessful railroad men *ll the country. His name inspires confidence, and his ability consists not only in good judg ment as to the location and building roads, but also in doing the same more economically than almost any other man in the country.
