A great deal of work wa* done, but the people have not beeil favorably impressed with 4he labors and general proceedings of the Legis lature. 1 he ( am»llton bill is not among those vetoed by the Governor, and the fiiends of the measure suspect foul ploy on the part ol someone, especi ally as it is not the first time that a tiling of the kind has been done.— \\ hut a sad commentary upon the dex moralizing influences of the times! ) Men, now a-days, often; boast of then own shame ! Was the bill stolen ? That's the question Hppermost in the mind of every one. The matter will be brought to the attention of the Gover nor and to other officials interested in freeing the legislation of Georgia from the opprobium of such conduct; and, if the bill has been stolen, it is to be hoped the perpetrator of the wrong will be discovered and punished as lie deserves. 1 hat the bill was passed there is no doubt, as positive information to that effect was received here. Indeed the daily proceedings, as published in the Atlanta papers, show its passage. See letter of Secretary of State in reply to application lbr a copy of the i bill. G. & X. A. Rail lload lias been prolonged to Flint Corner, and a branch located lb Bowdon. Judge ShelnutCcluims that the .Alabama Charter requires it Nk> intersect the Selina, Rome and Dultoflh Roa,d somewhere between Oxford and Jacksonville. A. Johnson, at Newnan, are making extensive preparation to sup ply the wants of their numerous cus tomers and friends, with all the Gro ceries and Dry Goods they want du ring the Fall and Winter. They keep a large stock and sell at wholesale and retail. Will buy your cotton, or sell it for you, without charges. They keep constantly on hand a heavy stock of Bagging and Ties at wholesale and retail, and have several comfort a ble and commodious rooms connected with their stores, which are always open and offered gratuitously to their customers and friends to spend the night while in their town. To all of them I replied that 1 would not. 1 was of course, then, very much surprised, when that assembly adjourn ed to learn that I was the nominee for the office. While I am very proud of the honor conferred by the dele gates, and fully appreciate their kind ness, vet other duties compel me to decline to run in the coming election.
