Cox Effiq The speech of the above rising young man, who is now Solicitor Gen eral for the Talapoosa Circuit, on last Wednesday,- upon the political situa tion, was well received and made a fine impression. We heard it spoken of in complimentary terms by a great many. Air. Cox was originally a “ Straight,” and was opposed to the endorsement of Greeley by flu; Deitfo* cratio party, but in his speech on last Wednesday, he' gave a sufficiency of reasons,- to satisfy the straightest of the “Straight.?,” that if is the duty of all true Southern men to support Greeley under tiie circumstances. Mr. ('. is a young man of fine parts, who not only r understands how to prose cute criminals who have violated the civil laws, before the courts of the country, but also how to prosecute po lit leal criminals, who would vi olate and undermine the fundamental law of the land, ami change our constitu tional government into a consolidated despotism. fiirS 1 "'Misses M. Senator Smith was elect cd to the Senate as a Republican, but being in favor of peace and recorrcila tion between the sections, which the Grant party are trying to keep up, he joined hands with the Liberal move ment, and now is in favor of “clasp i n£ r bands across the bloody chasm.’' O G. W. llakper Esq.— The above young lawyer made a speech at the Court House?, on’ last Thursday, which was listened to with interest by a large and respectful audience. We publish an extract from it in another place, beaded the “Bloody Chasm.’’ As this is the first time we have' ever heard our young trend George, on the rostrum, we were somewhat surprised at his ease and grace as a speaker, and the ability with which he handled his subject. We should 1 ike to publish his whole speech, but have not the room. As we go to press, Judge Rig by, who was nominated the other day by the negroes at LaGrange, as their candidate tor Congress, is haranguing in the Court House. We have not space j nor time to notice his speech now, but will pay our devoirs to it next week. Suffice it to say here, that it ap pears to fall dead born and cre ates no enthusiasm, even among his political associates.
