Professor Ryan and his son, ° “» ave fDe fun loving people of ° UI touna c °uple of entertainments los week. On Monday night owing t 0 the sllort notice given, theaudieuce was not very large. Professor Ryan “opened the show” with a lecture upon education. This was rather te dious to those who went for the pur pose of laughing alone, but was con sidered vei;y good by the older h* ads. After this master Rolla appeared in a variety of characters. First as a (i woman’s rights woman,” and suc cessively as an illiterate newsboy, a simple, a bashful school boy, &c., in ail ot which the deafening applause and laughter gave token of his success and the approval ot the audience. On Tuesday night the Professor delivered a sound, practical, sensible lecture upon the independence and stability of Nature’s laws, after which Master Rolla again appeared in a se*. ries of characters, and created much fun and merriment for the audience. Success to both. Saw Mile Burnt. —We regret to learn that the saw mill of Mr. C. E. Walker, formerly Kelly <fc Walker, two miles from this place, on the Newman road, w r as burned night be fore last. The engine it is thought is not materially injured. Some plan ing machinery and a good deal of lumber was also destroyed. AVe did not learn the origin of the fire ? nor the estimated loss ot Mr. W alker. A review of Judge Bigby’s speech, delivered here last week, is crowded out. Closing Exoicises W. J. Doster’s School. Editor Tijjes :—The examination and exhibition of Prof. IF. J. Dosters school carue off the 13th September. TFe will not enter into a full detail of the exercises on that occasion, but hope you will bear with us, that we may show to the public that we have a good teacher, and the proper mater ial, when properly trained as they have been this year, to make an inter esting school. The examination commenced at 10 o’clock a. m. Prof. Doster aunounc-’ ed in the begining that there would be no select lessons, and Prof. R. P- Davis of Villa Rica, and Prof. C. A. Steed of Liberty Aoa lemy, were invited to examine the classes. The examination by these gentlemen was quite satisfactory to the patrons. The best of order was preserved by the pupils. Everything moved on like clock work. Re will not occupy, your space by gi> ing a detailed descrip lion of the evening exercises, but suf iice it to say that they were also sat isfactory. The exhibition at night was the grand occasion. And the exhibition we must say here, had not taken up any of the school hours for its prepa ration. After a short piece of music an introductory declamation, by Mas ter Bernard Aw trey opened the per formance, followed by various decla mations ami compositions, together with now and then disguiseed perform ances, by A. J. Richards and J. F. Shields of Lickskillet, who by the by, are as good performers as our country affords. As it would occupy t o much space we will not specify tne different parts and plays, but injustice to the Professor and his pupils will say, that all performed their parts well. The exhibition closed at 11 p. m. Now a tew more words and I am done. Fellow citizens and patrons ol Macedonia school, you know we have a competent and faithful teacher, 0.,e whose name is inso»ibed indelibly up on the hearts of our children, one wm , though strict in school discipline, ev ery child not only respects but loves, iii the highest degree. And now what next ? I say. for the convenience ot both teacheis and pupils, let us have a good house built. This we are in want ot you ail know. Then comeom and all, let us look to our duty. L t us determine to have a coni odious aim convenient house. It will not cost any of us individually very much.— The Professor, if his services are se j cured at Macedonia Church, proposes to use his best efforts to show what can be done the ensuing year. In conclusion Mr. Editor I will say that I am no longer a candidate for Tax Collector, but propose a race tor Treasurer. The people will please remember me in the coming election, aid give me their support, tor which i shall feel under many obligations. Respectfully. J. M. Hamickr, Jk, Sand Ilill, Ga. A J. Cox, Esq., La Grange, Ga. — This talented, eloquent aud popu lar gentleman delivered an interest ing lecture in the Chapel ot the Masonic Institute last week. His subject was “County Development as an Object of Honest Pride aud Wor thy Ambition.” A large audience greeted the lec turer and heartily enjoyed “the feast of good things" which he spread be fore therm Among the points discussed by the speaker were two which deserve special mention aud which ought to receive the serious consideration ot all. 1. The homestead exemption is an incubus upon the credit of all, and especially upon the farming popula ! tion. 2. The lien laws stimulate farmers to speculative farming but at the same time, on account of the home stead exemption, place them largely at the mercy of dealers in plantation supplies. The consequence is farmers have been plundered to a large extent, the fanning interest is depressed, and ail other interests are languishing. Let the farmers of Georgia rallv, sweep these unjust laws from the sta_ tute book and restore prosperity to the State. Auditor. Read Grand Jury Present ments.
