Carroll Superior Court.
ON TMli WAY.
TVe left Newnah, October fitli, for
Carrollton. A\ e began our journey
.done, but soon were overtaken bv
Mr Williamson, Sheriff of Carroll, and
Judge FeatherstOn, of this city. As
usual, we ate a lunch at Blair’s Spring
about noon. In due time we had
crossed the river, and were in the se
verest shower of rain we had seen fall
in many days. Like all things earth
ly, it soon passed aw ay. All along
the road, on the west side of the
Chattahoochee, were visible evidence
of enterprise and improvement called
forth by the anticipated visit of the
iron horse to that region. Whites
burg is growing, and ere long it is
hoped by many of its citizens that it
may’ be the happy possessors ofa Court
Mouse.
CARROLLTON
is improving rapidly. Its population
is increasing, while many parts of the
town are adorned by handsome resi
dences of recent erection, the resi
deuces of .air. John Y . Stewart, is
very attrative in size and appearance.
Mr. Kramer’s little cottais cozy as
° v
heart could wish. AN o saw many
more tasty houses, but memory can
net recall the names of their owners.
Mr. I*. G. Garrison, whose faith, din
ing the dark and uncertain day’s of
the past that he would live to see a
railroad completed to Carrollton, was
almost Abrahamic in many particu
lars, is now preparing to have built,
on the site ot his former stand, a
large brick store house. The citizens
of the place ought to deposit in one
of the cornerstones some evidence of
Mr. Garrison’s long friendship for
that railroad which calls that house
into existence.
Carrollton, while guarding her ma
terial is ntft forgetful of her educa
tional interests. The tow nis blessed
with two thriving schools, Professor
Reese will complete, in a jew weeks,
a large Seminary building, near his
residence. It is the intention of the
Professor to dedicate it on the 14th
of November. lie will open his
school next session, in his new build
ing, in which lie will have ample and
comfortable accommodations for tw r o
hundred pupils. Prof. Reese is one
of the most accomplished and untirer
ing educators in the South, and at his
own expense has-erected a building
which is an honor to him living and
will perpetuate Mis memory after
death.
Tin: ELECTION.
We heard many efforts to account
for the election of Mr. Long, Republi
can, over Mr. Candler, Democrat, as
the Representative of the county, al
though Carroll gave.. Gov. Smith
mot e than oJO majority over Walker.
The result of these efforts ended in
the declaration that the Democrats
elected Mr Long. It is true, that
many local questions were involved,
yet Mi . Long had many warm person
al Democratic friends who, in addi
tion to his own party’, had confidence
in Ills integrity and qualifications, and
voted for him. Mr. Long had been
a public-spirited citizen, aided much
in securing Carroll county and Car
roll-ton the railroad, had been raised
in the county’ and from boyhood bad
himself that his friends
increased annually, until all who knew’
him esteemed him aV.cl hence the
Democrats who voted against I,im
did not during the canvass oppose
him vigorously. Although Mr. Long
is a Republican, it is not thought that
he would support any men or mens
tires of that party, unless he believes
the welfare ot the State will be ad
vanced by such support.
COURT.
His Honor, Judge Buchanan presi
ded with ease and grace, and prompt
ly and clearly decided all questions
submited. No important cases were
tried. Jim Lewis, colored, plead
guilty ot burglary in the night time,
but was not sentenced before we left
Tuesday rn orn ing.
POLITICAL SrEETWIES.
Wednesday noon, Mr Cox, Solicitor
General, delivered a stirring speech
against Grant and in support of Gree
ley. Ills arguments and appeals
were greeted with enthusiastic ap
plause. The speaker rasped Judge
Bigbv severely. Wednesday mght,
Hon. W. C. Smith, of Grantvillc, ad
dressed a large audience on the politi
cal issues of the day. He nls<} gave
Judge Bigby a passing touch, as we
were informed, for we did not hear
his speech. We have learned that
Thursday noon, Judge Bigby came
back at Messrs. Cox and Smith, but
with what success we know not.
Carroll promises to give Greeley
and Harris 500 majority in November
/ GEN. mThEKSON’ UNCLE.
During Court we met Mr Elijah Mc-
Pherson, who has been a citizen of
Carroll more than forty years, and is
now in the 83rd year of his age. Age
has told on his body but his memory
is bright, and he tells with clearness
the stories of his early and eventful
life. Among other things of interest
we learned from him was that he was
the uncle of the celebrated Federal
General McPherson who was killed
in one of the battles around Atlanta.
Mr. McPherson was a soldier in the
war of 1812, and is now receiving a
pension of S9O a year from the gov
ernment of the United States.
THE TIMES.
During our stay we called at the
office of the 'Times, and saw its editor
and publisher. The limes is a good
paper, and we are glad to know it is
prospering.
CONCLUSION.
Our business concluded, we left
Carrollton Thursday morning and
reached Newman without* encounter
ing accident or incident.

urgently requested to come forward

Mr Blalock, and the goods divided,
and hence the necessity of closing up
the business. AH those to whom the
firm Iras heretofore generously ex
tenaed its credit, we hope, will
appreciate the situation, and will
come forward, now that the cotton
crop is pouring into market, and mon
ey becoming plentiful, and settle up
their old dues. These accounts must
be settled this Fall, and we hope our
friends will come promptly forward.
You will still find W, C. New at the
