T.—A special meeting of the Good Templars of this place will beheld to night, at the chapel of the Masonic Institute. A full atten hice desired, as important business will be transacted. Suicide.—We learn that Mr. Absa lorn Barnett, living some six miles east from here, killed himself on last Sunday, by cutting his throat with a iazor. We failed to hear the particu lar We regret to hear that the g n and mill of Mr. Win. West, liv ing in the 6th District, was destroyed on the 6th inst. by* fire. There was in it at the time, about 20 bales of cotton. Loss estimated at $6,000. Personal.—Dr. Barker, an old cit izen ot this county, but at present liv ingin tho flourishing city of Birm ingham Alabama, is on a visit to Car rollton. He reports Birmingham as still ‘•booming,” and anticipates a population there of 50,000, in less than kn years. Alex Wheeler says that he i°«t his Day book on last Wednesday u igbt containing a small amount of money. He fears there are evil spir k* about. We believe that if we bad titty to rent, we could do so, within the next month. Many people, who have been here prospecting our place would come here to live, if they could get houses to live in, on reasonable terms. It is true, that there are a few to rent, but at least a dozen applicants for every one ot them, and hence the owners are putting such figures on them, as tend to drive off those who may wish to come here. Let those who have the lots and the means, put up neat dwelling houses upon them, if they r wish to build up the town, and enhance the value of their remaining © property. We are certain that it would be a safe and paying invest ment. We bear the complaint fre quently made that property is too high in Carrollton. Whether this is really true or not, it is a difficult mat ter to determine, as it depends upon the future importance of the town, a correct estimate of which it is now a difficult matter to form. We would suggest, however, that we believe that land owners within the corporate lim its, could make it to their interest to hold out inducements to buyers at this time. It is unreasonable in them to expect to sell lots in a village ot four or five hundred inhabitants, for as much, as in a city of as many thousand. Let them first get the peo pie here, by bolding out inducement’s and then they can get easily their big prices for lots. This is the true poli cy, and one which will pay best in the long run. Let them not kill the goose that laid the golden egg, by re pelling new comers, with their high pi k es. Gone to Texas.— Our young friend Prof. F. T. Stephenson, who has been engaged in teaching in the Masonic Institute at this place, during the past year, left on last Tuesday, for Dallas Texas. We hate to give up such young men as Prof. S., but since be is determined to cast his lot in the “Lone Star State" he lias our best wishes for his success. To the people among whom he proposes to cast his future we commend him, as a young man of fine talent, energy, industry and sobi icty r . Mr. G. W. Williams, whose name was announced a week or two ago, as an independant candidate for Sheriff, upon consultation with his friends, withdraws from the race. “A fat Plage '’or Some One —An agent is wanted in this county to in terest himself or herself in showing the Extraordinary Premium List ot “Our Own Fireside” and getting can vassera to work for them. a oi>r|o\vn Fireside" is a Large Illustrated 16 pag ed paper and gives each subscriber the choice of three Ohromos finer and better than offered by any other jmb lislier.” The Macedonia Singing Society The Society met at mount Carmel church on the 2nd Oct 1872, and or ganized by electing Henry S.
