B? ’CRT OF BOARD OF DIRECTORS.
Griffin, Ga , Oct. Ist, 1872.
Jo the Stockholders—Gentlemen :
r l lie Board of Directors at the close
of the fourth year’s operations of your
road, make the following report :
1 lie earnings of the road have been:
From Freight $24,001 70
From Passengers. 15,803 40
From Mai 15...... 1,840 GO
$41,145 70
Expemes for same time.. 21,799 21
Leaving a balance ,$19,349 49
Compared with operations for 1871.
or last year:
The earnings were $34,590 9G
And operation expenses . . 25,838 00
Net balance ..,. $8,692 96
Y\ hieh shows an increase in the net
earnings of the road for 1872 over
18 <1 of $10,653 53. This increase
lias been very satisfactory. A com
parison of the operating expenses of
the road for the past two years will
show a decrease as follows :
Operating expenses for 187 V >25,837,00
Operating expenses for 1872,21,799,21
Decrease 1872 over 1871 4,039.79
The business of the road from its
commencement was embarrassing,
with very low rates of freight and a
limited extent of country from which
to draw support, hut it has been suffi
cient to pay ail current expenses and
interest on its bonded debt, leaving a
handsome balance to go to the new
construction of the road.
\ o.u were informed in the report of
the Board last year, that the extern
sion of the road to a point beyond
the Chattahoochee river, and probably
to ( arc >lkon would be made in time
for the present year's crop. The
Board of Directors have not been
able to press the work forward as fast
as they then hoped, but have succeed
ed in grading the road, with the ex
ception of two or three formidable
rock cuts and a small space of earth
grading, from Newnan to Carrollton,
and have erected an excellent bridge
across tlie Chattahoochee river, and
ressle work on each side, and are now
preparing for the lading of track to
the west side of the Chattahoochee
river.
The iron for laying the track, about
eighteen miles, lias been purchased
and deliveied to the company, and
the track will be laid to the river by
the first of November, and across to
Whitesburg, by the fifteenth of No
vember, nothing unfavorable occur
ring. The Board of Directors have
had the embarrassments complained of
at your last meeting in consequence
of the non-payment of the stock sub
scribed for by parties in Coweta and
Carroll counties under consideration.
Suits were brought and judgments
have been obtained against most of
these subscribers. It is hoped they
will pay this winter their subscrip
tions to the stock of the company.—
Should they do so, the road will be
speedily completed to Carrollton.
You are referred tor the condition
of the finances, receipts, disburse
inents, stock and construction ac
counts to the tat lea of the Treasurer
which exhibits fully all financial op
erations of the company. The Board
have experienced pecuniary embar
rassments in raising means to build
the road, stock and bond markets
have been languid, and much difficul
tv has been experienced in the sale
of the company's bonds, but the future
prospects of the road having given
'confidence, has enabled them to dis
pose of the bonds and get aid to
build the road upon more favorable
terms than was expected ; indeed we
feel that the favorable position of the
road commends it to connecting roads
and capitalists, and the extension of
the road beyond Carrollton is but the
work of a short time when we have
reached that point.
Very respectfuliy submitted by the
Board of Directors.
