Personal.— We have had the please
ure, during the past week, of meeting
in our town, our friend Col. S. W.
Harris of West Point Col Harris
was a gallant soldier, during the late
war, being commander of the 6th
Georgia Regiment, and is a young
man of fine talent, for whom we pre
dict a rapid rise in his profession, the
law. This is the Colonel’s second visit
to our county,- in the last month or
two, and* he is so well pleased with
both our county and town, that we be
lieve he has about made up his mind
to settle in Carrollton.
II a A he’.
Departed this city on the 30th ult.
Thomas K. Connor, aged 19 years 11
months and 29 days.
For several weeks he had been at’
dieted with that fatal epidemic, known
as the “ western fever,” and his friends,
accurate in their diagnosis of bis case,
have known that sooner or later they,
would be called upon to part with
their beloved companion. On last
Saturday morning the sad finale came,
and while surrounded by friends who
spoke kind words of cheer and en
couragcmeot into an ear that would
soon be dull to their voices, the silver
cord (that bound him to Carrollton)
was loosened, the golden bowl (out of
which we drank Tom and Jerry) was
broken, and the bright, cheerful spirit
of our dear friend and companion
winged its flight to his lather (in
Texas.) Before this tribute of respect
to bis memory,’ shall greet the eyes of
his friends* he shall have handed in
his chips to the grim Charon of the
Mississippi, and his soul be reveling in
the delimits of the auriferous West.
’T is ever a sad duty to part with those
we love, one of whom Tom was‘which.’
We have been intimately associated
with him for many months, and can
truly say that a more agreeable com
panion, or sincerer friend we never
ad. He was kina and courteous to
all, faithful and true to his friends,
open, frank and “ generous to a fault
with all he met, and we pay but a just
compliment to him when we say ;
“ None knew him but to love him
Or named him but to praize.”
We shall miss thee sadly dear Tom
in all our pleasure excursions, at our
parties, and in our evening game of
whist. The girls too will keenly feel
thy absence.
Ho mote for thee their blazing hearth shall burn
Or Carroll sweetheart braid her shining ha.r ;
Soon Texan girls will greet our Tom's return.
And crowd around his envied kiss to share."
But more than all others will the
old Thespian Corps iuiss thee. We
fear that fraternal society will wax
and wane now that the brightest sta r
in its galaxy cf histrionic talent has de
parted.
May a happy fortune attend the
path of each and every one through
life, and in the great final day, when
the Lord shall count up the jewels in
his diadems, of saints, may not one
be wanting, but each be a gem in the
glittering circle.
A Thespian.
Carrollton, Dee. 3. 1^72.
The Epizootic.
No section of the country seems to
be free from the ravages of the horse
I epidemic, now raging over the land
| It has found its way into every nook
| and corner of our country. During
the past week, we have noticed sever
al cases of it in our town, and we
hear that it is in variotls portions of
the conntv. Hence, the following,
from the Buffalo Commercial, upon its
symptoms and treatment comes in au>
pfopriately at this time:
'•The dis ease which is now seizing
so generally the horses of this city is
plainly of a catarrhal character The
first notable symptom will be a flow of
tears from the eyes, a waterv dis
charge from the nose, and general lan
guor. Next a cough, which, becom
ing more frequent, will soon occur in
paroxysms. In the commencement
the membranes of the nose will' be
found pale, or of a leaden color, and
those of the eyes presenting a yellow
ish or reddened appearance. Many
cases are ushered on with a chill.—
All this is soon succeeded by a gener
al feverish condition manifested by
heat of the mouth, membranes of
eyes and nose reddened, pulse fre
quent, though soft and easily com
pressed, respiration quickened and
sometimes laborious. At this stage
the bowels may be sluggish, urinary
organs inactive, and the discharge
from the nose often assuming a yel
lowish or greenish appearence.
The disease usually runs its course
within ten days, and with proper treat
ment few, ii any, cases ought to
prove fatal. Those, that do so are
usually complicated with other disea
ses, as bronchitis or pneumonia.
Treatment.— The patient should
be excused from all labor, and allow
ed complete rest. The stables should
be kept clean and well ventilated.—
Disinfectants may be useful, and in
some cases neccessaiy. Either of the
following will answer. Carbolic acid,
sulphate of iron, or brotno cl oral utn
The patient should be properly groom
ed, and the nose and eyes frequently
sponged witli water, and the limbs, if
cold, bandaged. The drink should
have the chill slightly removed, but
not enough to make it warm and un
palatable. The diet should be light
and of a' laxative nature ; say short
feed or bran wetted or scalded ; with
a little salt added. Hay in limited
quantities may be allowed.
Southern Cultivator.— This old
and reliable magazine for December is
at hand. Every farmer should have
it. Now is the time to subscribe for
the corning year. Address W. L.
Jones, Athens, Georgia.
An Epizootic Wa UMNO. — A man by
the name of Becker, who resides near
Quarryville New York, owned a
couple of horses tln>t bad the distem
per. In cleaning out the mangers, the
other day the virus came in contact
with a flesh wound on his hand. In a
short time his hand and arrrf became
so terribly inflamed and swollen, they
had to be amputated. Soon after the
amputation he died. Persons owning
horses cannot exercise too much pru
dence in this respect, as the matter
from this distemper is rank poison to
the human system.
Tee North and South Railroad.
—We learn from the Columbus Sun
that Col. W. J. Winn, until recently
Chief Engineer of the Nortn and South
road, has resigned, and we learn, re
turns to his home in Liberty county,
and that Mr. F. W. Harris succeeds
him as Fngineer in charge. The Sun
says that Mr. Harris, with the neces
sary assistants, left Columbus on
Tuesday to complete the revision of
the location North of La Grange, so
that the Heard eounty construction
company may go to work.
We regret the resignation of Col.
Winn as we believe him to have been
a faithful and efficient engineer. To
him much of the credit is due for the
rapid progress that has been made in
the construction of the North and
South Railroad. Wherever he goes
he will carry with him the kind wish
es of many on this line of railroad en
terprise.—Li Grange Reporter <
A gentleman meeting a friend
who was wasting away with consump
tion, exclaimed, “Ah ! my dear,
fellow, how slowly you walk. “Yes,’’
replied the consumptive, “I walk slow
but I’m going fast.”
Elias Williams, of Buffalo, Missouri,
blew into the muzzle of his gun to see
if it was loaded. Could Mr. Williams
communicate with his friends in this
world, his spirit would gently whisper
