“Have you any kinfolks here ?’’
A. H. 8., was wont to laugh and
say that the people ot C were all re
lated; and he used to tell a tale of this
*km«i :
P. fell out with Q. one day and was
abusing him to R. Li-temag patientl\’
until P. got to a pause, R. said—“ I
have heprd such things of Q. before,
aRd I am afraid they are true ; but,
you see, Q. is my uncle.” “ D he,”
cried P, “I beg your pardon. I be
lieve every word I’ve said, but as Q.
] s your uncle, and you are a particular
Inend of mine, I’ll take it all back.”
And off P. posted to pour his corns
plaints into the ear of S.; who heard
him awhile and then remarked, ‘Well*
yes, I am afraid Q. is not so good as
he ought to be, but, you see old tel,
h,e is my fathersin-law.” “Thethunder
you say!” roared P. “Is that sos
I am willing to swear to every thing
I’ve said, but as you and I are good
friends, I take it every word back.”
After visiting TANARUS., U., V., & C., and
finding that Q. was kin to them all,
P. discovered a stranger ride up. Ap
proaehkig him cautiously, he mysteris
ously took him aside and whispered
in his ear, “ Have you any kinfolks
here ? ” “ No,” was the reply. “Well,”
said P. joyfully, “ you are the very
man I’ve been looking for all the
morning. Here, landlord, put up this
man’s horse and give him his dinner.
I’ll pay all damages.” Then, tak'ng
the stranger to his room, P. unbosom
ed himself of all his grievances ; and>
being relieved of his burden, he came
forth ,in great good humor with every
body, and was ready to shake hands
even with Q.
Minis e.ill Changes.
Rev AV. C. Dunlap will be pastor of
the Methodist Church, vice Rev. Jos.
Chambers who goes to Fairhurn ; and
Rev. J. P. Shaffer will be pastor of
the Baptist Church, vice Rev. G. W.
Colquitt who goes to Heard County.
Whilst we regret to part \yith old
friends, we cheerfully extend the right
hand of welcome to new. Mr. Dun
lap is no stranger here, however, but
returns to sow again in fields froiy
which he has heretofore reaped abun
dant harvests. Mr. Sh ifter has al
ready visited us and made a good im
pression.
Rev’. AVm. Dimmock of the Presby
terian Church aud Rev. A. C. Borden
of the Christian Church, will contin
ue in their pastorates.
A\ r e trust that the labors of all will
be abundantly blessed to the good of
our town and county, and commend
those that leave us to the affectionate
care and confidence of their new
charges. ***
Barnum & Robinson.— The great
showmen have visite l Georgia this
winter and, no doubt, reaped a golden
harvest. Quite a delegation from our
town visited Newnan o?i the Oth inst. t
to see Barnum. From them we wJI
doubtless learn whether or not the
Prince of Humbugs humbugged them.
“ Lookout for the Engine when
the AVhistleßlows.”—i’keears have
reached AVhitesburg, and soon, we
hope, we will have daily mails. By
May we ought to have steam comma
uication with the outside world.
t&aTThe editor is absent this week
and the pro. tem. is inexperienced;
this is our apology for any lack of the
usual variety. “Ye local” went oft'
to see Barnum’s whale, and we don’t
know whether he has been sold or
Jonahed.
A prisoner was brought up
from AA T hitesburg the other night on a
charge of larceny. He waived an ex
amination and gave leg bail.
“Still tukt come.”— Who ? why
don’t you know that all the world
wants to come to Carrollton 1 Hardly
a day passes without bringing some
one here in quest ot a home. Our
greatest need now is houses to rent o r
sell. The attention of.property own
ers and capitalists is called to this
pressing want. Let them supply it,
and they will reap a rich harvest.
New Streets and Lots.— The
ekv council ought withoutdelay to Take
the necessary steps to lay out new
streets. The new boundary of the
city should be determined, and the
recent acquisition of territory divided
into town lots. Hurry up, gentlemen;
don’t hang tire too long.
Postponed.— The drawing of the
Monumental Association of Georgia
at Augusta is postponed until Jan.
3th, so as to allow Agents opportunity
to sell tickets through the Holidays.
This has been done at the request of
the friends of the enterprise.
r
Editor Times —The election for
Council men of Bowdon came off to
day, which resulted in the election of
the following gentlemen : J. W.
Adamson, Dr. John Coston, Dr. L.
I Adahold, J. W. Downs and G. A.
McDaniel. It is not known yet which
of them will be styled Mayor, or who
will be the marshal, but it is hoped
that there will be but little for any of
them to do, except the general regu
lations of such matters as will be
necessary for the general well fare of
the town and surrounding community.

We Reap Wftat we Sow
For pleasure or pain, for weal or for woe—
Tis the law of being—we reap as we sow;
JFe may try to evade them, may do what we
will,
But our acts, like our shadows, will follow us
still.
The world is a wonderful chemist, be sure,
And detects in a moment the base or the pure;
We may boast of our claims togpnius or birth,
But the world takes a man for just what he is
worth,
We start in the race for fortune or fame.
And then, when we fall, the world bears the
blame ;
But nine times out of ten, ’tis plain lobe seen,
There’s a ‘.screw somewhere loose’ in the hu-
Utan machine.
Are you wearied and worn in this hard,
earthly strife 1
Do you yearn for affection do sweeten your
life f
Remember, this great truth has often been
proved,
We musj make ourselves lovable, would we be
loved. .
Though life may appear as a desolate track,
Vet the bread that we cast on the water comes
back.
This law was enacted by Heaven above.
That l.ke attracts like, and love begets love.
\\ T e are proud of our mansions of mortar aud
stone,
In our gardens are flowers from every zone ;
But the beautiful graces which blossom within
1 irow shriveled and die in the Upas of Sin.
We make ourselves heroes and martyrs for
gold,
Till health becomes broken, and youth be
cotces old.
All! did we the same for a beautiful love,
Our lives might be mu*ic for angels above.
We reap what we sow—oh! wonderful truth ;
A truth hard to learn in the days of our youth!
It shines out at last, as the ‘hand Oil the wall,’
For the world has its * debit’ and ‘credit’ lor
all.
Compulsory Education.—ln Prus
sia, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark,
Norway and Sweden, education is
made obligatory by statutory enact
ment. Holland practically makes it
the same by denying certain rights
and privileges to the uneducated.—
England and France both have this
question now under discussion. There
is a drift of public sentiment An that
direction in this country, The Legis
latures ot Pennsylvania, Ohio, Couuec
ticut, New Hampshire, and Michigan
have recently made this subject a mat
ter of debate, and a late number of
the Christian Union strongly favors
compulsory education in this country.
