EST* The LaGrange Reporter has
seen a bundle of fodder twenty-nine
years old. In 1844, Mr. Eli Davis,
living near White Sulphur Springs, in
Meriwether county, stowed away his
fodder, and went next day to Greeu
vi.le to hear Ben Hill speak in favor
of Henry Clay for President. Fodder
each year has been piled on that bun
dle, and it has just come to the light.
Looks like last year’s crop. A hen’s
treat was found in it.
The Macon Telegraph, alluding
to the SI,OOO premium for the county
showing best products at the State
Fair, says : Cobb is not agriculturally
a rich county. On the contrary, her
soil is thin, rocky and sterile, as to
the most part ; but she seems to have
what is a great deal better than fat
lands—a stirring, energetic, industri
ous people. We have been assured
that the effect of this triumph by
Cobb county last year has been ex
ceedingly beneficial on the fortunes of
the county. It lias not only given a
new impetus to agricultural industry
there, by rousing the ambition of the
people, but it has increased the de-
Vnarid for and the value of lands in
"Cobb county in a marked degree.
Another result of Cobb’s triumph
last year is that she is unanimously fix
ing up to come down on us in force
next October, and not only maintain
her preeminence, but make it still
greater and move prominent in the
face of the whole State. Cobb is at
work now in her preparations for a
grand display, and if she does not win
the great prize again, she ought to do
it for her enterprise and backbone.
A Narrow Escape from Fire.—
Ou Saturday night a dense mass ot
smoke was discovered rushing up the
hatchway in the composing room of
the office. The fire had made much
progress and it is probable had it not
been “ Babcock Fire Extinguishers ”
are kept in the office, that the three
buildings would have been entirely
destroyed. Only t wo-persons were in
the premises at the-time of the fire,
and they succeeded in 'putting it out
unaided, except by the “Babcock Fire
Extinguishers. ” —A 7 . Y. Evening

B&“ ’’arris of the Savannah News
is responsible for the following :
There is a number of young men in
Macon who have formed themselves
into a sort of association for eeonomi
cal purposes. They do their own
washing, cooking, eating aiid sleeping,
each taking his turn. The other day
one of the brightest intellects in the
4>aity concluded he would surprise his
companions by having waffles for sup
per, and to this end he pulled off’ his
coat, rolled up his breeches and went
to work. When the others came
Lome they found him sitting compla
■cently by a large tire, with a smile on
his face and a good deal of-patter in
his hair, watching a pair of waffle
irons which were buried up to the hilt
in hot embers He has not resigned
yt*, but he has remarked to several
of his intimate acquaintances that it is
astonishing how long it takes a waf
fle to get ripe.

A Peace Offering.
We are by no means a particular
admirer of Henry Wilson, Vice-Pres
ident of the United States. We have
a vivid recollection of hearing him
make a speech in 18G.5, to a Southern
audience, which we cannot soon fors
get, howevever desirious we might
be of doing so. As the most of our
readers will recollect, in that year,
just at the close of the sanguinary
conflict, which resulted in the down*
fall of our cause, he made a mission
ary tour of the South, for the purpose
of enlightening us poor heathens as
to our duties, and of reproving us for
the heinous crimes which we had
committed,, but more especially for
proclaiming the superiority of Noth
ern civilization over Southern, ami
telling the negro that he was indebt
ed to him and His party, for the great
boon of freedom. The speech which
we heard him make, taking into con
sideration the circumstances and the
occasion, was decidedly the most stud
ied insult, to which we have ever liss
tened. In nasal tones, it breathed
forth urmiistakebly, the spirit of the
bigoted Pharisee and Puritan. It was
Fy no means a peace offering, nor
calculated to allay the bitter feel
ings between the sections. It was
not relieved by a single spark of the
chivalric sentiment of magnanimity,
which we are accustomed to look for
in the brave foeman. Its effect, as
he doubtless intended it to be, by bis
falsified statements of Southern his
tory and character, our traditions, and
our people, was to arouse the just in
dignation of the spirited Southerner,
and to fill his breast with bitter and
revengeful feelings.
But it seems that even Henry
Wils >n can do a graceful thing. His
late act in calling Gen. Gordon to the
Vice President’s chair, to preside over
the United States Senate temporarily,
has redeemed him considerably in our
estimation. This was a genuine peace
offering, and will excite kindlier feel-
Ings in the breasts of Southern men,
towards him and His party. May be he
has seen the error of his programme
of 1865, and has learned that was not
the way to close up the “bloody
chasm.” We hope so, and that his
late act may prove the precursor of
more liberal sentiments and a broader
statesmanship with him and his party

Haralson Superior Court.
Most of the week was occupied in
the trial of the case of the State vs.
A. I). Woods, who was indicted for
the murder of Thomas Ivillgore, on
the 26th ot August.
A deep interest was manifested in
the trial and people from all parts of
the country came to witness it.
There was considerable difficult} 7 in
getting a jury, there being but about
400 names in the jury box, and at
least tour fifths of those who were
summoned either disqualified them
selves, or were objected to by the
State or the defendant The State
was represented by the Solicitor Gen
eral, Judge Head, Ivy Thomson and
Captain Dodd, while the counsel tor
the defense were Walker Brock, Ma
jor Blance, W. W & G. W. Merrell,
and Col. C. D. Forsyth.
The evidence disclosed facts in
substance as follows : There had been
a misunderstanding between the par
ties and a few days pefore the kiilmg?
Woods was out hinting his cows,
when deceased came up behind him
iu the road. Deceased had been seen
around Woods house two nights before,
with his gun, and Woods stepped to
one side and o rdered deceased to
take the road around before him, that
he would allow no man to walk be
hind him who had been prowling
around his house. Deceased refused,
and Woods compelled him to do so,
“ telling him he would shoot him if he
didn’t. After this circumstance de*-
ceased publicly proclaimed his inten
tion to kill Woods, whenever he
“ marked the square ” or “ come on
the hill.” He repeated his threats
each day, and on Sunday at church
told several parties that he was going
to kill old Woods soon next morning,
or be killed himself. “ Some ody
had to die ,” and invited parties to
come and see him do it, said be had
arranged all his business for the pur
pose. These threats were brought
home to Woods a few minutes before
deceased came in. Deceased appear
ed on the Square, armed with a shot
gun. and Woods killed him.
Four days were consumed in the
trial The jury after an absence of only
a “ few minutes returned a verdict of
not guilty.” Os course I have not giv
en a minute detail of lhe testimony,
but such as I have given are the lead
ing points in the case.
The people ot Haralson seem to be
at peace with each other once more,
and let us hope that the days of
cow-hides, buck-shot, bloodshed, and
anarchy will dawn upon them no
more. Spectator.
