Tilt! Election of f>elfguten In IU
Count y-
The election for delegates to the
County convention to select four
delegates to represent the county
in the Gubernatorial convention
passed off, so far as we have learn
ed, very quietly throughout the
county. In two of the precincts,
Lowell and Turkey Creek, no elec
tion was held. The following is
the vote cast in the various pre
cincts, excepting the Fifth, which
we were unable to get:

The delegates selected by the
districts met in convention on last
Monday and selected the following
delegates and alternates to the
Gubernatorial convention:
Delegates, Dr. Slaughter, T. A.
Smith, R. A. Springer, J. M. Hew
itt. Alternates, Woods Barnes.
Dr. Williams, Dr. Moore, B. A

The candidacy of Joe Brown for
the United States Senate, will no
doubt enter into the canvass in the
selection of representatives through
out the State and if the Joe Brown
and anti-.)oe Brown elements are
not harmonized in the Democratic
party, the result may he a serious
split. A plan has been proposed
in Coweta county to reconcile the
conflicting elements and it will be
submitted on the flrst Tuesday in
August to a mass meetirng. This
plan is to have a nomination as usu
al for representatives, and in the
selection of delegates to the nomi
nating convention, let the Brown
Democrats endorse on their ballots
“Brown” and those opposed, on
their tickets “anti-Brown,” in this
way ascertaining the sontimeats of
the Democracy of the county as to
the election of Gov. Brown to the
Senate.
According to the Atlanta Con*
stitution’s table, Gov. Colquitt will
go into the convention, with almost
two-thirds majority. If tins table
is correct it is quite probable ho
will be nominated on the first bal
lot. If he should fail on the first
ballot there may be a stubborn
fight over the nomination.
Politics in Randolph county,
Alabama, are said to be at a red
white heat. The Chairman of the
Democratic Executive Committee
lately resigned, and then took the
field as an independent candidate
for Probate Judge.
The statistics show that West

which is nearly as large as West

There is a negro man in Doug

who has the largest foot in the
State. His shoes are fifteens in
number and measure 17 inches in
length.
Congressman Blount has been
renominated in the Sixth district
after a spirited contest, the number
of ballots running ap to 174. His
principal opponents were Glover
and Preston.

Washington, D. CL July 24,’80.
Said a gentleman to me yester
day, whose name is distinguished
in the annals of his country’s re
cent legislative history. “It is ab
surd for so-called independents to
insist that the coming election will
he merely a contest between candi
dates and parties, and that there
are no great issues before the peo
ple.’ Issues were never more mo
mentuous or more sharply defined.
I irt and foremost among them is
the overtowering issue raised by
the Electorial Commission. In it
is involved nothing less than the
right of the people to choose through
constitutional methods their highest
executive officer. It really involves
their right to vote, for the ballot
will become an empty mockery if
the great crime by which Mr.
Ilayes was installed shall go unre
buked, and Freedom will have
greater cause to shriek than at the
death of ten thousand Kosciuskos,
if one of the visiting statesmen and
one of the electoral eight shall he
elected to the high place now dese
crated by an executive placed there
by fraud.
Political philosophers are right
in speaking of Republican Govern
ment as an experiment. True, it
had subsisted in the United States
until the election of Mr. Tilden.—
It lias appeared fitfully and inter
mittently in France. Favored by
peculiar geographical environment
it has held its own in the Swiss
Alps. There are certain indica
tions in modern times that point to
Republicanism as t.lie government
of the remote future, hut viewed in
the trend of the world’s history,
Republican government must he
| looked upon as a very novel expe-
I rirnent. Certain it is that it lias
been most fatally stunned for four
years in the United States, and that
the Republican party are so cal
lously insensible to the crime and
the calamity that they are trying
to award one of the chief assassins
with the presidency. It is this cal
lousness, tin's moral obliquity of
men m high judicial and legislative
j places, where they ought to be chas
tened and purified with enthusiasm
for this sublime but critical exploit
ing of popular government, that
makes patriots seriously solicitous
for the fate of Republican institu
tions in the United States.

The following preamble and res
olutions were introduced into the
last Legislature by Hon. A. PI.
Cox. He is a strong advocate of
the Chattahoochee river, and will, if
sent to congress, do all in his power
to get an appropriation for that
purpose.
Whereas,The Chattahoochee river
is one of the most important streams
in the southwestern portion of the
country, flowing as it does through
large portions of three States, viz:
Georgia, Alabama, and Florida,
and draining one of th richest agri
cultural sections of the Union; and
whereas, the opening of this river
would directly benefit about four
hundred thousand people who live
along its banks ; and whereas accor
ding to the United States census of
1870, there was, at that time $6,-
398,603 invested in manufactories
producing annually $9,166,465,
while the production of farms am
ounted, according to the same au
thority, to $22,768,908; and
whereas, the census shows $1,760,-
750 invested in cotton factories,
twelve of which run 80,000 spin
dles ; and whereas, besides the
above, there are 240 merchant mills
and 134 grist and saw mills, and
many other work; hops and fact
ories located in the section referred
to and mostly situated immcdiatly
upon the Chattahoochee and its
tributaries; and whereas, the
great, gold producing region of the
United States east of the Mississip
pi river, lies immcdiatly along this
river; and whereas, rich and val
uable deposits of magnetic iron ore
and other ores and minerals of
great value, are found in large sec
tions of the country through which
it flows ; and whereas, the finest
timber in great abundance is found
along its whole length ; and where
as, recent surveys, made by the
United States government, demon
strate that this river can be made
navigable for 700 miles from the
Gulf of Mexico into the very heart
of the country described, and that
for a sum not exceeding one and a
half million of dollars ; and whereas,
all tins section is now with
out any adequate means
of transportation ; .now, therefore,
Be it Resolved by the General
Assembly of Georgia, That we

SUMMER PESTILENCE UNEARTHED; ITS CAUSES EX
PLAINED AND SOME TIMELY ADVICE ABOUT
HOW TO AVOID IT.
CERTAIN VALUABLE FAGTS MADE'PUBLIC.
It is well known that hot weather brings sickness, and that few people go through th
Summer without unpleasant symptons. r ihe mouth becomes dry and parched, the ton
furred and white, the pulse irregular, the head feverish, the body cramped and the' limbs l u \
len and tired. Ladies especially, with their natural delicacy and tendency to female trouMv
find the hot weather almost unbearable, while Little Children are dying every day from m
ha”stion and because Parents neglect precaution and care. A prominent and well known
physician of New York asserts as his positive belief that more than three-fourths of all so-called
Summer compiaints arise from disordered secretions, and that these secretion ary organs. whH
by being out of order cause so much trouble, are the Kidneys and Liver. These organs are tL
governors of the system, and by their movements the other parts of the body are regulated

certain in its results. It keeps those who intelligently use it in perfect health, and cures those whose seem
