A Hen’s Curious I7atc*t,
A gentleman of Raleigh, of un
questionable veracity, rebitea a sto
ry whose truth he asserts to be
above par. for some time past a
hen of his had been conspicuous by
her absence from the premises.* and
there were fears that she had been
lost. These fears were very agree
ably dispelled, however, on Friday,
when she made her appearance,
singing in her gayest manner, and ■
stepping along in her sprightliest
style. Just behind her were some
diminutive objects to which she ev
er and anon gave her undivided aU
tention. The slowness of their
progress caused the hen’s owner to
rush out and see what the brood
was this time. Fie was astonished !
to see the hen cover with her wings
twelve little terrapins. Soon she
was reassured, and allowed him to
get a look at her treasures. The
family were called out to see the
wonder. The owner of the hen j
then went back the way she had
come and found out how the eggs
were hi tched. A terrapin, which
had laid the eggs, had deserted;
them, and the motherly fowl con- ■
eluded to sit on them. This she
had done, and the result was the
twelve young terrapins.
Salt Growing’ Cubbape.
A New Jersey gardener consid
ers salt necessary to the develop
ment of cabbage, especially in
places far from the coast. He finds
them more crisp, of better flavor, j
and to keep better when salt is used
than without. He used it as fol-'
lows: ‘A few days after setting ;
out the plants, and when they are I
damp, either after a rain or when !
the dew is on, I take a small dish
of tine salt and walking among the '
rows, sprinkle a little salt on the i
center of each plant when the leaves
be.;in to grow. I repeat the salt
ing, and when the center of the
leaves begin to form the head I ap
ply salt again, scattering it over
the leaves ; after this I look them
over occasionally, and i-f I find i
plants that do not head well and ■
appear diseased, I sprinkle the salt ,
over freely; this will save all such .
plants. A quart of salt is sufficient
for five hundred plants in a season,
although more can safely be used.’

A Mule Forty-Five Years Old.
Everybody knows the old grey
mule “Jack,” which for long years '
has been in the employ of the
Southwestern Railroad. His ex
act age is not known but there are !
several parties in Macon who re-'
member “Jack,’’ thirty odd years ;
ago when he was used as a switch
engine in Griffin. Subsequently
“Jack” was brought to Macon and
has been engaged in a number of ,
capacities chiefly as a draught ani
imal.
A few days since “Jack” was.
hitched up to a wagon at the depot,
and for the first time in a long hon
orable and usefuljife “Jack,” refus
ed to pull the load. His physical
strength was exhausted, but his
moral power and inclination to do
well still lived beneath his grey
hide.
“Jack was unhitched from the
wagon and is now allowed his lib
erty. The company pays his board,
and are determined to care for |
“Jack” so long as he lives. The 1
best information we can receive,
places “Jack’s age at forty-five
years old.—[Macon Herald.
A Plan Cool Rvoins.
Often at night, wffien the heat is !
well-nigh unbearable, a wet cloth !
hung in the window over the blind ■
will cool the room as if a shower'
had fallen. Everybody knows
lioav water poured on the pavement
in front of the door will freshen
the hot, dr}’ air. This principle of ’
the reduction of temperature by j
evaporation is capable of much
practical application. In India and
other tropical countries, where ice
is almost unknown, the natives cool
their drinking water by suspending i
earthen jars filled with it in a brisk ;
current of air which process is said ■
to cool it thoroughly and rapidly, i
So, also when ice is unattainable, ■
butter may lie kept firm and sweet
by setting the bowl containing it i
in a vessel of shallow water and ■
covering with a napkin, the ends of ;
which are well immersed in the
water in the bottom dish.

one of the great banking centres of
