LOCAL GOSSIP.
We will publish Colquitt’s and
Norwood’s letters of acceptance in
our next issue.
An interesting protracted meet
ing is going on at the Methodist
church this week.
We are requested to state that
15 cents will be given for the first
bale of cotton of this year's growth
brought to Carrollton.
We learn from a correspondent
that Mr. G. W. Camp has bought
Simsville in the Sixth district,
from Mr. A. L. Waddell.
• An Association of the United
Baptists will be held at Young’s
chapel, Third district, commencing
on Friday before the Ist Sunday
in September.
We have a communication from
Mr. M. R. Russell giving an ac
account of his trip to the Agricul
tural convention, which we will
publish next week.
Mrs. Sarah F. Cole, daughter
of J. A. Blair of this county, was
tried for lunacy on last Monday
before Judge Julian and found
guilty. She will be sent to the As
ylum.
Judge Gib Wright of Albany is
in town. The low country appears
to agree with the Judge as he is in
the very best of health. Judge
Wright is a strong Norwood man.
The brick work of the new build
ing of Dr. Aderhold was finished
on last Saturday evening. It is a
good piece of masonry and reflects
credit on the contractor, Mr. Chad
wick.
The funeral of Elder T. B. Jones
who recently died in the Third dis
trict, will be preached at County
Line church, on the 3rd Sunday in
September, by R. T. Speight and
Wm. Roberson.
We are requested to anaouuee,
that owing to indisposition, Mr.
Thoa. A. Jackson Las been unable
to meet his appointments at Turkey
Creek, Ninth, Bowdon, Eleventh and
Lowell This he regrets very much
but it could not be helped.
Just before the gubernatorial
convention met, we told a friend of
Gov. Colquitt that wc belie red that
Gov. C. would bo nominated, but
that if he was not, that no one
would, that his friends would bur?
up the convention, if they couldn’t
get him. Our friend said x he
thought differently, that Gov. C.
would never permit the convention
to adjourn without a nomination—
that he would get out of the way
if necessary. Would that this es
timate of Gov, C's. patriotism had
been correct.
Some of our Colquitt friends,
thinking they are with the big
crowd, arc disposed to sneer at the
little minority as they call it. Now
whether they are with the big
crowd or little crowd, the election
in October will tell, and we are in
clined to believe that they will be
woefully surprised when the peo
ple, the whole people speak. But
what we started to say is this:
That it makes no difference with
us, whether wc are with the big
crowd or little crowd in this contest.
We don’t run with the crowd, but act
from conscientious motives and from
principle. When the time shall
come when we shall be afraid as a
journalist to speak out for the
right as we see it, then it will be
time for us “to step down and out.”
For the trimmer in politics or any
thing else we have the most supreme
contempt.

Villa Rica Kafcinga,
We have had plenty of rain in
this vicinity, and prospects for a
fine crop of cotton is just splendid ;
corn is also good.
Vilia Rica is getting famous for
drummers, and the proprietor of
the Villa Rica House carries a
beaming countenance.
Mr. W. B. Candler has had his
store-house repainted inside and out
and new counters added, which
sets his house off in beauty and
. style. Z. T. Allen & Wife have
1 had about the same improvements
made upon their millinery store.—
So you see by the improvements of
our town that prosperity reigns
here to some extent.
The Baptists have had a fine re
vival at their church here. Fif
teen new members were enrolled
upon their church book. When
the Rev. Mr. Lane takes a hand
you may expect success.
The Villa Rica camp-meeting
embraces the Ist Sunday in Sep
tember, beginning on Thursday
before. The ground will be neat
ly cleared off and the preacher’s
j tent built, and everything will be
as comfortably arranged as possi
ble. Everybody that can should
attend and try to make the meeting
a success. We hope Mr. Lee, of
Carrollton, will be here, and all
other pastors that can attend.

:ut it must be remembered that to be a profes

Rut nothing less than the ability to write and cal

higher class ot attainments is called for on the

Nearly a quarter of a century ago, a system of
