A Sacred Number.
To begin with, the nnmber sev
gn was by the Jews q£ old locked
upon as being in a measare a sa
cred number. The seventh was the
Salibath, and that of course was
venerated as the day of rest ; but
besides that there was the week or
period of seven years, during the
last of which the earth was un
corked, and left in a state of re
pose. Then, too, there w«» the
time of seven weeks of seven years,
or forty-nine years, at the expira
tion of which came tlie great year
of Jubilee. AV hen visited by those
wonderful visions which are incor
porated in the /Apocalypse, the ex
ile of Patmos could not fail to have
noticed, as we do now, the singular
repetition of the number seven in
vaiious place,s in the Revelation.—
There were the seven churches to
which the message' was sent, the
seven golden candlesticks with their
seven branches, the seven ever
burning lamps, while in the figura
: tive description of the last day, St.
John is reported to have-heard sev
en trumpets sounded, to have seen
the sevQn vials of wrath uanred out,
the seven stars falling from heaven,
to have ivatched the breaking of
the seven seals, and to have flown
in spirit with the seven executing
angels, In the days when holo
causts were looked upon as a perti
nent form of religion, the number
seven was not overlooked. Thus
Job’s friends offered a sacrifice of
&even calves and eeven heifers.—
David, at the time of the transla
tion of the ark of the covenant;
immolated the same number of vic
tims ; and Abraham offered a sac
rifice of seven sheep when making
an alliance with Prince Abimelech,
and similar instances might be mul
tiplied without end-. By the bye,
the chief Israeli!ish feasts of Pas
sover and Pentecost are separated by
an interval of seven weeks.
Growth of the Hair.
Then? are three reasons why
woman’s hair is longer than men’s:
First, she lias no hair growth on
her face, and so has a larger sup
ply of hair forming material for
the scalp J second, the diameter of
her hair being larger,it is less liable
to break ; third, being usually less
engaged in mental labor or business
worry, she has a more constant and
even supply of blood to the scalp.
In nations where the hair of the
men is usually worn short, the fash
ion of long hair in the male is ro
garded as a protest against general
customs, taste aud thought ; in
Austria it is made a political offense
to be so-attired.
The growth of the hair is the
most rapid in the young and mid
; dle-aged, and in those living an
outdoor life. At the age of 80, if
4i man live so long, and if his hair and
beard have been close-trimmed, he
has cut off six and a half inches of
haii- annually, or about thirty feet
in all.
The hair is the least destructible
part of the body. The hair of the
ancient Thebans is, after a lapse of i
4,000 years, found to have survived |
the tombs. The Pyramids and
the Sphinx are crumbling, but some
of the wigs of human hair, exposed
to the mold and moisture of their
entombed apartments, are less de
cayed than the monuments them
selves.
There are three coloring pig
ments so the hair—yellow, red and
black, and all the shades are pro
duced by the mixture of these three I
colors. In pure gold yellow hair
there is only the yellow pigment;
in red, the red mixed with yellow ;
in dark, the black mixed with red i
and yellow ; in the hair of the ne- ■
gro (here is as much red pigment as I
in the reddest hair, and had not the i
black been most developed—per-!
haps by the action of. the sun—the
hair of all negroes would be as fi- •
ery a red as the reddest hair of an
Englishman.

Doubtlessly man is a very wise '
animal, but there are some things |
be does not know.
A cloud of ten thousand gnats 1
dance up and down in the sun, the
minutest interval between them, yet |
no one knocks another headlong
on the grass, or breaks a leg or !
whig, long and delicate as these
are. Suddenly, amid your admira
tion of this matchless dance, a pe
culiar high shouldered, viscious
gnat, with long pendant nose, darts
out of the rising and falling cloud,
and, settling on your cheek inserts
a poisonous sting.
What possessed the little wretch
to do this ?
Did he smell your blood in tire
mazy dance?
No one knows.
A flock of geese Seem to’befairlv
under your carriage ’wheels, almost
under the horses hoofs, and yet
they somehow contrive to flap and
waddle off. Habitually stupid,
heavy and indolent, they are ney
erthless equal to any emergency.
Why does the lonely wood pc cker
when he descends bis tree to drink,
stop several times on the way, lis
ten and look round before he takes
his draught ?
Noone knows.
How is it that the species of
ants which is taken in battle by
other ants to be made slaves, should
be black, or negro ants?
No one knows.
Many birds seem to understand
bow to judge dangers and how to
avoid it, but man cannot under
stand how or why they know it
and never will.
On the of subject silk culture in
Georgia the Oglethorpe Echo says:
“There can be no . question of the
adaptation of the larger part of
the country to silk culture, or of
our ability to grow the worms, suc
cessfully. Experience Ms estab
lished these two facts, and so it has
superior quality of American grown
silk. It is not so necessary to urge
the cultivation of the mulberry as
it is to establish first a market for
the cocoons. In some parts white
-mulberry are already grown in
large orchards for the sake of the
fruit, which is deemed most valua
ble food for hogs ; and in case the
mulberry trees already grown should
at any time be cut off by mildew
and disease, as they wore at the
close of the rnulticaulis fever in
1839 and 1840, we have the advan
tage over Europe and other coun
tries in being able to fallback upon
the malcura, or usage orange, which
pi'oves; when judiciously fed, to be
as good as mulberry.
Gen. Robert Tczumbs is not the
only Georgian who is entitled to
the distinction of not being a citi
zen of the United States. Gen.
Henry R. Jacksou of Savannah,
keeps Gen. Toombs company in
this regard. Gen. Jackson was a
Colonel in the United States army
at the age of 23, then a Federal
Judge, Minister to Austria, and af
terwards Judge of a Confederate
States court, and on that account
is among those excepted from the
general amnesty act.
“Suppose we pass a law,” said a se- 1
vere father to his daughters, “that
no girl eighteen years old who can
not cook shall get married until
she learns how to do it ?” “Why;
then, we’d all get married at seven.-
teen,” responded the girls in a
sweet chorus.
Why a fellow feels all at sea at
his own wedding standing up with
his girl, is because he is a mar
rin’ er.
Cured of Drinking.
“A young friend of mine was
cured of an insatiable thirst for
Liquor, which had so prostrated him
that he was unable to do any busi
ness. He was entirely cured by the
use of Hop Bitters. It allayed all
that burning thirst; took kway the
appetite for liquor; made his nerves
steady, and he has remained a so
ber and steady man for more than
two years, and has no desire to re
turn to his cups. I know a num
ber of others that have been cured
of drinking by it. 7 ’ —From a lead
