The Town council could not
make a better investment of the
people’s money than to have force
pumps put into the wells at the
corners of the public square.
“What,” exclaims the N. Y.
Med. Record, “would be thought if
ophthalmologists, otologists or gy
necalogists were to secure legisla
tive enactment to prevent their
medical colleagues from practicing
in their field unless they adopted
the profession of ophthalmology,
otology, or gynecology,” &c, &c?
Don’t know what the Record
would think, but we would think—
yes, pei haps they would.
Chandler’s Spring
Has for years been a favorite
place of resort lor old and young.
It has been the place of picnics
and barbecues and celebrations of
every sort. Its destruction or fail
ure would entail as much discoms
fort as that of any one of the wells
kept up at the public expense bn
the public square. If some meas
ures arc not taken for its protection
the spring will soon be ruined.—
What shall be done about it?
It is a question for the city au
thorities, and we are sure that we
but utter the common sentiment of
the public in expressing the hope
that they will take the necessary
steps to preserve this source of so
much pleasure and comfort to the
people.
A Geological Survey.
The Agricultural society of
Georgia having appointed a com
mittee to bring before the legisla
. turn the question of re-establishing
the department of Geology, that
committee has been sending out
circulars, calling on the press of
the State for expressions of their
views on the subject. The commit
tee has made its report in favor of
re-establishing the department of
Geology, We do not now propose
to discuss the question of the utility
or value of a thorough geological
survey of the State. We grant that
such a survey is desirable. But
think the time for it has not yet
arrived. The farmers of the country
are making no special outcry for it
in their behalf. The capitol is to
build. The State is already cramped
in her finances, to such an extent
that it will be absolutely necessary
to increase taxation or adopt some
measure to insure more complete
and full returns and equal valuation
of property. Under such circum
stances it is not the part of wisdom
to increase the expenses of the State.
While the proposition will come
before the legislature under the
•auspices of the State Agricultural
society it will be readily regog*
nized as a fact that the great mas-*
see of farmers have had nothing to
‘do with it and that of those who
desire a geological survey, nine
‘tenths are willing to wait until we
get the capitol off our hands.

Beware of Texas.
Warren Meadows, of this place
bs traveling in Texas. He is now
at Dallas and from a letter written
by. him to L. P. Mandeville we are
‘permitted to clip the following:
“I have met several Georgians here
; and they all curse Texas. Find
‘more people hunting something to
do than you ever heard of. Saw a
•man this morning, asking for a po
sition as salesman in a grocery
•and he was first asked what his
ilume was, then what it was before
Ito left home. ** * » I don’t
understand how the stock live and
drink such water as they are forced
to here. The water in the cisterns
even looks worse to me than it does
m tlie common hog wallows of
Georgia. IJam fully satisfied of one
thing, that it is much more pleas
ant to live in the Eastern than the
Western States.”
Death.
Died of puerperal fever on
Wednesday, July Bth, Mrs. T. J.
Gamble, The deceased was quite
young, only twenty one or twenty
two.. She was a daughter of * Mr.
Marion West. A husband and
several little ones are bereaved by
this sad dispensation of Providence.
The Confederate Dead of Carroll.
Where are they ? In the valleys
of the ©ld Dominion, among the
green hills of Tennessee, along the
grassy plains of the “dark and
bloody ground” of Kentucky, in the
swamps of the great valley of the ’
Father of waters, in the pine groves
of Florida and the Carolinas, around
where the commerce of the Gate •
City of the South mutters its ceas-
Icss roar, under the shadows of!
Kenesaw and Lookout mountains ;
and Missionary ridge,—wherever,
as walls of stone, the southern col- j
umns stood to meet the shock of I
battle, —there sleep, in unknown
graves, the hero sons of Carroll.—
Shall we let their names too perish
from our memory ? Sometime ago
a movement was set on foot to
erect a monument to the memory
of Col. Charles McDaniel’ How
far that movement has been carried
we are not informed. It was hoped
that it would receive a new impetus
at the commencement of Bowdon
College, which owes to him so
much of her past success. Whether
any thing was done in furtherance
of the worthy object, we are not
apprised. But we wish to suggest
and to urge the organization of a
memorial association, having for
its object a wider scope of purpose
and plan than to do honor to any
individual soldier, however dis
tinguished—an association looking
to the erection of a memorial shaft
upon whose panels shall be inscrib
ed the names of all of Carroll’s
sons who fell in the dire conflict of
arms. The Times heretofore un
dertook the collection and publica
tion of the company rolls. Doubt
less many of the papers containing
such rolls are laid away with names
marked by loving hands, —names
that do not open afresh the ghastly
wounds of the past, but which
bring to loving heaits sweet
memories of noble virtues, of man
liness, self sacrifice, courage and
patriotic devotion—memories that
we and our children will do ours
selves honor in cherishing.
But we want a naoie substantial
memorial of the departed than
mere printed rolls. We know a
number of public spirited citizens
who are willing to contribute of
their means to this patriotic pur
pose. It is hoped that it would be
esteemed a privilege by a very large
majority of our citizens to be en
rolled among the contributors to
such a purpose. Our brave boys
gave their lives for what they
deemed the right and and in obe
dience to the call of patriotism.—
Shall we not keep their memory
green ? We suggest to all who
may take an interest in the matter
—and there are many who will—
that a meeting be held in the court
house on thelstTuesday in August
and a memorial association organ
ized, by the election of a President,
Vice presidents, secretary, Treasu
rer, and executive committee.
The old confederate veterans,
you who ‘’have seen” your “com
rade fall, And the tear that filled
his eye,*’ we Uigst will take up the
work. The State has given a pit
tance to -such as have had a iimi)
lopped off, but no provision has
been made for the widows and or
phans of those who fell. Let the
orphan have at least the consola
tiod of knowing that the people in
whose cause Us father died, have
attested their appreciation of the
sacrifice in some such way as that
suggested.

A Medicine that has Done More to
Relieve Suffering Humanity
than All the Physicians
It is seldom that a newspaper
condescends to editorially notice
the thousand and one patent medi
cines that flood the market, but
Swift’s Syphilitic Specific has
proven such a great boon to the
human family, that in sounding its
praises one feels that he is symply
doing his duty to fellow-man.
This great preparation is a Georgia
product, purely vegetable, and has
taken a stand in the world of med
icine that has forced a recognition
and endorsement not only from the
press and the pulpit, but even
physicians. It has effected
hundreds of thousands of cures of
blood poison, and there is not a
hamlet in the land but where you
see living illustration of its efficien
cy. There to-day walks the streets
of Athens well-known gentlemen
who owe their very lives to S. S.
S., and they will tell you so if you
ask them. It has become a house
hold remedy and in every family
you see a bottle standing on the
mantle. It not only positively
curs all manner of blood poisen,
but rheumatism and hundreds of
other diseases incident thereto.
Nine-tenths of our population are
more or less afflicted with impure
blood, and they have now discover
ed in S. S. S. a panacea for their
ills. Hence its field of usefulness
unpounded. Would, that the pro
prietors had millions, that their
grand and gloious work might be
extender to the four coners of the
earth! Now, many persons have
been ruined for life, and rendered
miserable, by trying to eradicate
one poison with another. It is
symply an exchange of evils. But
not so with the great S. 8, S. While
cleansing the blood of every particle
of poison, it is as harmless as the
rippling waters of a meuntain
brook. The anly result of its use
is a complete and through retora
tiou-fu health.—Athens Banner.

AU in the Line of Nature
There is nothing in the line of
magic’orjnystery about that won*

of those vegetable curatives which
act powerfully and directly on the
stomach, liver, kidneys and blood.
But there neither is, nor will be,
any successful imitation of it. It is
all the time curing those who had
