Mrs. Martin Crider’s funeral
will be preached at Tallapoosa
church, 5 miles south of Carrollton,
on next Sunday, the 9th day of
this month, by Rev. Enoch FhiL

Mr. George Tumlin’s little girl,
who is about two weeks old, is just
in time to become a lady of fash
ion within the coining season, and
the other babies gladly welcome
her into their bright circles.
The quantity of cotton daily ar
riving at this market is so great
that the warehouses are filled to
thetr utmost capacity, ami running
over, although large shipments arc
made almost daily.
L C Mandeville is having added
to his store a nice oflice at the
back of the main store room, which
will augment considerably the al
ready large space in which Lis big
stock of goods are packed and
jammed away.
Mrs. B. F. Cotton, of Hawkins
ville who camo up on last Satur
day on a visit to her Father Mr.
A. J. Daniel, returned to day, ac
companied by her sister. Miss Ka
tie, who purposes making her
home with Mrs. C. We wish Miss
Katie a pleasant time in her future
home.
Messrs. Rhudy and Spin lock
don’t do business on the half shell,
as von will sec by glancing at
their big double column advertise
ment on this page. They’ have a
tine, superb and select stock of
goods and are determined to have
their share of the fall and winter
trade, and no one cpu do better in
our opinion, than to go and see
them before buying anything in
the line of general merchandise.
We take pleasure in calling at
tention to the card of Messrs. Gor
don <fe Brown, attorneys at law,
from which it will be seen that
these gentlemen have entered into
partnership in the practice of law.
They are both already well known
to the public:—Mr. Gordon as the
able Solicitor General of the City
Court, and Mr. Brown as one of
the representatives of Carroll in
the late general Assembly and as
a successful lawyer.
Some scout drel set lire to a
large straw pen near Mrs. Susan
Stallings’ house a few days ago,
and, but for the accidental discov
ery of the flames and ihc timely
arrival of help, not only the pen of
straw, but probably the dwelling
and other buildings on the place
would have been consumed. Lt is
believed that tramps set the fire,
expecting the house to be left un
guarded so they could enter and
help themselve*, and that they
were frightened from their purpose
by the quick arrival of several pco .
pie who saw the flames and hurried
to the place.

C have recently been ru nma

one is about as favorable to agi -

seemed to combine to make the
earth produce to its utmost capaci-;

they had done, the rains have '
been sent without stint upon the
fields till the corn has been sprout

Onr little town ha* been wide
awake since busines opened out so
briskly, and the indications are fa
vorable for a tremendous trade this
season. Cotton is being rapidly
brought io town, and our mer
chants are endeavoring to compete
with railroad towns in prices. The
colossal road engine, recently or
dered, and of which mention has
already been made, reached its
destination last week, and is now
at. Vaco. It will be of great, ad
vantage to the growth and prosper
ity of western Carroll, and the
projectors of this enterpiise should
receive every encouragement from
our people. If the engine proves a
success, we will not be far .behind
rail road towns, as regards quick
and cheap transportation facilities
It will yield a magnificent dividend
to the owners, and at the same
time they can afford to haul freight
much cheaper than any railway
company, as nothing will be re
quired in keeping up the track;
and the incidental expenses will
not be near so heavy.
Dr. Lucius C Adamson, having
passed a most creditable examina
tion, has accepted a position in the
U. IS. Navy. Dr. A. is a flnislied

The school at this place will be
run upon the same basis next year,
as it was this—free to all students.
lam glad to state that I’rof.
Tappan has decided to remain An

could ill afford to lose him, as few
others could fill this position with
equal ability and zeal.
Several of the leading citizens
of Carrollton will patronize the
school at this place next year. Mr.
Roy Harris, son of Judge S. W.
Harris, of your city, has been at
tending school at this place for the
fall term. His rapid advances
testify of studious habits, anti his
quiet, gentlemanly demeanor has
won for nim many friends in our
town. •

the road a piece to get a view of sonic pretty
• scenery. When we returned it was 12 o’clock
; and we sat down to a meal fit for a king. There
is no one who would not have been able to appre
date those line large round reddish sweet Yams, j
the fine, well worked, delicious butter, and fresh
buttermilk. These were my favorites of that’
as of every other meal. After we had . dined we
wen t down to Mr i/ack Giles’ fine sorghum mill
to get sonic cane to chew and to look at that in
stitution. It is
A GOOD THING.
j 1 here are two mills, both run by steam ; the
largest evaporator 1 ever saw ; water ranks, etc.
I noticed that Mr. Giles had more sorghum cane
thanl had s• en on one farm in some lime. He
thinks he will not get it all ground up and will
lose a great part of it. That is really bad, after
going to the expense of cultivating it. The far
mers in that direction, 1 notice, are coming up
with the general progress of our country,—take
and read newspapers, use improved farm imple
ments, and keep up good farm’s. It is a good
sign for the country and shows rapid development '
in agricultural interests.
