Ist. 1867- Editors Express: Having been solicited, by many citizens of the 42d District, both white and black, to run for the Convention, I have, at last, got my con sent to do so, and l *»eicby announce myself a candidate for said convention. As it is cus tomary for candidates to give tl eir views on Ihe leading questions of the day her* goes: I believe in all men having their rights in the courts of the country. I believe that a convention ought toce held and our State reconstructed, and take her place in the Cajon. I am opposed to the confiscation of the lands of the whole people. 1 am opposed to the whites and blacks Ire coming socially equal, hut think they ought to he |h> itically so. As vvi are all poor ami have but little ofthis world’s goods, and in order that all should now take an equal start. I am in favor ot wip ing out all old debts, and let each one take a fair start, &c. These arc my ideas on some of the loading questions of the day, If elected, I will do all the good and as little harm as possible. Yours, truly, BEN LATIMER. Inconvcnicuees to our people, by ha ving the county advertising done outside ot 1 the counry, was demonstrated on last Tues day. by one circumstance within our knowl* edge, which is as follows: A certain valuable piece of property was advertised in the Weekly Opinion, to be sold at this place on the first Tuesday in October by the Sheriff. The own ers of the property were notified of the levy but not seeing it advertised in the county pa per supposed it was not to be sold, consequent ly were not at the sale, and the property was bid oil'at less than one third of its value. Death ot Gen. Sterling Price. St. Louis, Oct. 1. —The funeral of Gen. Sterling Price to-day, was one of the larger ever seen here. The cere monies took place in the First Church, l)r. Boyle, where the remains lay in state all the morning, and were visited by a very large nyurbef of citizens. | General Presentment* of flie (h and Jury, 'ld and fid Week., Harlow Superior Court. \\T E, the Grand Jurors, for the second and t T third week* of the September Term of the .Superior Court of 13 irtow County, 18*37, beg leave to make the following presentments : The Grand Juoira of the first week of said term having relieved us of such investigations of the officers of Court and condition of the county affairs generally, by their si ict exam inations into its various channels, we earnest ly beg of those having in trust the charge of our county aflairs, and the administration of the law, us carctui and tavorable considera tion. We, particularly ask of the Inf. Cour'iu spe cial attention to the recommendation on the subject of a Poor House; and we lullv concur with said Jury’s presentment upon this subject. I’pon the subject of Bridges we respectfully call the Inferior Court’s attention to the re pairs of such bridges, on the main thorough fares leading to and from the county site, as we understand, by a small expense at present, some ot these bridges can be made quite safe lor the traveling public. We are aware of our extreme poverty, the indebtedness of the coun ty, and the extreme reluctance of the Inferior Court to carry us farther in debt, but they must hear in mind that the public buildings now m couise of erection are being erected mostly by private donations, thus relieving the county of any • xpense much to the satisfaction of the tax payers ot Bartow. The Inferior Court having contiacted for such building as, we think, will add credit to our county, we earnest y recommend to that body its continued energy, thus develop'd, to the full completion of the building now in course of erection. Bartow county is en itled to and greatly needs suck a public building, and when completed will not only add beauty and strength to our county and village, but honor to those whose wisdom has contrived such a specimen of architecture. To His Honor, Judge Milner, we extend our congratulations, for his impartial and fear less administration of the law. He has most assuredly become a terror to lawless and evil doers. To the Solicitor General, Col. Ptfrrott, we extend the thanks ot this body, for his ener getic and untiring effort to bring the lawless within the grasp of the law. We recommend the publication of this pre sentment, JOHN C. MADDOX, Foreman. Ordered, That the foregoing presentment’ be published according to the request of the Jury. JAMES MILNER, j. s. c. <;. c. They feed and lodge in a becoming manner. As for ourself we don’t want any belter. The proprietors, Messrs. Whitaker & Sassccn, arc both old hau ls at the business, and know exactly how to play the agreeable, and the gentlemanly clerk, Mr. W. H. Turner, is as courteous and accommodating as one could wish him *.o be. In fact, the manner in which the hotels of the city of Atlanta aie now conducted reflects no little emi t upon their proprietors and the place at large. They feed aud lodge well at reasonable prices, far supassing that before the late war. old friend A. K. Sea go, wholesale Gio<-cr and Commission Merchant, Atlanta, sue of the oldest, most reliable and responsible business men in that city, puts forth his Fall Circular in tnis issue of our paper, to which we iii'-ite he attention of our readers. Our eulogies will add nothing to his fair and already established reputation as a gentleman and 4-rompt businessman; the experience of those who hav« had dealings with him is a better encomium than we can award him in a simple newspaper notice. Suffice it to say that he is one of he leading merchants of that city and his house second to none. He has found out the secret of success and is prosecuting it with all his energy and ability. W Attention is directed to the advertise ment of Maddox, Reynolds A Cos., wholesale Grocers and Commission Merchants, corner of Alabama and Whitehall streets, Atlanta, Ga. This is anew firm just commencing business, though they arc not all strangers in that city Some in embers have been citizens of Atlanta for years, and are, to some extent, acquainted tu these parts. That it is a number one firm andhouse, no one who knows anything about the gentleman and their business, will deny. We cheerfully recommend this establishment to the favorable consideration and patronage of our Grocery Merchants and business men gen rally. They enjoy the reputation of being prompt and reliable, gentlemen of thorough business halo s. Their Groceries are all fresh and good, a"d they are anxious to sell them. n&»The American Hotel, Atlanta, Ga.. is just as good a house of public entertainment as a y traveler ought to wish to stop at The fair is good enough for anybody anjJ board very moderate. It is neat and elegant in nil its appointments. The propiietors, Messrs. White Si \\ hitlock, are both nice, clever gentlemen, and take particular pleasure in making their guests easy and comfortable, while the chrks, Messrs. Bryso*. «$- Wiley, never tire in afford ing answers to the thousand and one ques tions daily asked them, and pride themselves in being agreeable and accommodating to all. We say again, taking it in all its phases, the American is hard to beat. Burning: of rhe CTuiclilield llouse. Chattanooga, September 20.— The Crutchfield House was-totally destroy ed by tire at six o’clock to-night. The tire was caustd by the breaking of a number of kerosene lamps in the oil room, which the waiter was carrying. The flames caught the oil in barrels, and flashed up and spread all over the house in ten minutes. But little prop erty was saved in the lower stories. The fire originated in the wooden por tion of the house, and setting fire to the upper story of the brick part. There being no water near and no engine in town, the water was supplied through five hundred yards of hose from the fire engine of the machine shop, of the Nashville & Chattanooga railroad, but too late to ciievk the fire. The houses Dijar by were damaged by the sparks . but not seriously. Loss §IOO,OOO. — Insured for §45,000, SPECIALS . Cartergvflle Market. Cotton 15J cis. Corn, new, 50 cts. per bushel. Wheat, 82.00.
