Kartersville, Oct. Bth 1867* Editut Kartersville Express: Sir, about a week ago I liked to a lost my ballance. I was skeered about the Legencer man, but I am on my legs again right side up with kare. But there are frequently nois e made when no one is alarmed. If the cry of • fire” is heard, either bv day or night, it never fails to arouse the populace; and it is quite natural for one startled to put off in some direction in quest of the conflagration. This kind ot excitement tends to exhaust and prostrate the human sys tem; but when I tell you a startling story a bout that mammoth stock of New ball and Winter Goods that our old friend Jacob Elsas has just received and opened, and how pretty and tastey they are, and at what reasonable prices he is selling them, wo are not at all ex cited. we tell it calmnly and dispassionately, for we’know whereof we are speaking ; we have been around to his store, examined his goods and prices, and made our purchases, and have no hesitation is saying that we were well pleased with our bargain, and expect to go back again. Mr. ELSAS has a splendid stock of Goods on hand, and wants to sell them.— He is kind and affable in his manners, while his Clerks, Messrs- Godfrey and Sommer, are both agreeable and courteous to customers. — \Ve heartily recommend this house to the pat rol age of our citizens generally. Mr. Alex. McClintock, of Ky., has just arrived with a lot of fine Mules and Horses (73 in number.) He pro poses to sell low for cash, or will ex change for cotton, for which lie will make liberal allowances. Stock can be found at the old Livery Stable, for merly kept by Jones & Stocks. Cal! and look at an elegant stock of Silks, Irish Poplins, Merinos, Empress Cloths, De laines, and all styles of Dress Goods, at PECK, THOMPSON & CO,, No, 5 Decatur street, near Whitehall, Atl iuta, Ga, Ntto Stort. —Our readers at'ention is in vited to the advertisement of P. L. MOON, in Ihis issue of our paper. His new Brick Store room hag been fully completed, and he has just received and opened a superb stock of Goods, all fresh from market. He bought this stuck of goods in connection with two others, in person, which enabled him to buy them low down. He had pick and choice of the stocks, and consequently se'ected the best for this mar ket. He has no store rer t to pay and as be bought his goods at declining prices, he has resolved to sell them likewise —atveiy small profits. He says he can afford to do it, and in tends to do it. There are few nicer men in any community than Mr. Moon, and none more agreeable and clever. We predict for him a large and steady run of customers. He is a gentleman in whom the public confide and will always be patronized and esteemed by those who know him. Our old friend and former merchant, Silas Stephens, is with this house. W<- have a large stock of 111 ('SlClied and llrowll Sheetings and Shirtings, Bleached and Oolored Table Damask, Irish Linen, Red, White and Colored Flannels, Blankets. Robe its tSt Stocks for the nice little present bestowed upon us, on Tues day last, in the shape of a ham of splendid dried beef. These gentlemen certainly understand our peeuli <r love for the boa vine kine, lor. in aiming at our taste, they certainly drove the cross this pop. We have often heard il said, by individuals who possessed a rare fondness for mutton, that they could not look a sheep straight in the face,” it is eminently true in re gard to ourself and the beef kind. If there is any truth in the theory of “transmigration,” and in the future state our lot should be cast in with this quadruped, we will certainly be homed off from their association, on account of the slaughter we were largely instrumental in cre ating among their tribe, as fondly as we relish them in this life. We are proud to note that these gentleman have a plenty of the same sort yet on hand, and expect to keep it in the future. They have also a superior lot of Extra Family Flour. Canvassed Hams, and a general supply of groceries and provisions. They expect to move into their large new brick store room by the first of next week, (which fact will he duly announced by us,) and then they intend to o* pen out a stock commensurate with the wants of the people, and one that will be a credit to the place and proprietors. They are both No. 1 business men, and have large souls and lib eral hearts, and are identified with the growth and prosperity of Cartersville and surrounding country, and are destined to add much to the already high character of our merchants and market. We bid them God’s speed. You will find a good stock of GOODS FOR GENTLEMENS’ WEAR, also Handkerchiefs, Hoisery, Gloves, &e,, at PECK, THOMPSON & C 0„ No, 5 Decatur street, Atlanta, Ga. Blair & Braiisbato have commenced to move into their new and beautiful brick store room, where, in connection with their presen). stock, they are receiving and openjiyf a large and fresh installment of Fall and Wintct GBod a , Clothing, &c., and would earnestly’invite their former as well as as many new customers as may bestow upon them their patronage. Ev erybody is invited to call and examine the qual ity, styles and prices of their gooJs. This done, they entertain no fears as to the result. Self tfnfo itxJO itZXI ttsiu BuiJitS, w-tli har ness accompanying, rolling off from Jones Car riage Repository, in this place, iu the direction of the Depot, on Wednesday morning Upon enquiry xve learned that they had Weil bought by Mr. Ramey, the distinguished livery stable man at Rome, Ga., and they were bound for that destination. Only a short time ago we saw the sstne gentleman drive off" a genteel two-horse rockaway purchased from the same dealer. He also brings in his old vehicles to have them repaired. The carriage dealer who tuns against Jones, runs against a tartar, JHrs. We hope that our people will bestow their patron age upon Mrs. Mayson, as she is a citizen a mong us, and well worthy of patronage. Blair & Bradshaw are back at their old 3taad again. flaatffer P'txtnt --Our e«t< emed friend and highly respected neighbor, Dr. A. S. It is a well authenticated truth that the man who is liberal in his dealings with »he printer is liberal in his dealings with hi3 customers, and the man on the contrary who is hide-bound and exacting with the printer, will be so with his customers. We challenge the world to prove this assertion false. Men who liberally patronize the print er sometimes break, not because they adver tise too freely, but b.-causc their liberality was manifested too freely in all their transactions While liberality in the rigfit direction is a com mendable trait of character, prudence and c u" tion should regulate it. Why do we s yr; ! Because, no man is required to do more charity work than the printer, and the whole labor ot his life is spent in building up the interests ■ f individuals and communities, while they most generally themselves die poor.. A merchant in Cartersville, a few days since, handed us an an advertisement saying, at the same time, I do not expect that this advertisement will, ah. strac ly considered, bring me much more trade, but your paper is all the time laboring to build up our place, it must be supported, and I for one am willing to help do it, for, says he, we can’t get along without it. Now, thatm n had a soul. Dr Mayson, and I might enumerate a hoste of others, are just of that stripe We, in conclusion, only ask our readers to watch the Cartersville Express, and sec who adver tises during the year and otherwise patronizes the printer and who don’t, and then tell us the result of your observation. Don’t forget to look us up when you visit ATLANTA, and see some handsome VEL VET and CLOTH CLOAKS, SHAWLS, Sontags, Nubia', <&,<•., at PECK THOMPSON & CO., No. 5 Decatur street near Whitehall. Col. H. P. Farrow, of Atla .ta, and Capt• O’Conner, of Rome, (the latter taking the place of Mr. Nevims, associate editor of the Rome Commercial , a one legged man who did not s< me undet the requirements of the Code of Honor,) went down across the Savannah river, on the morning of the 12th, and exchanged shots at each oilier, but fortunately both shots missed, and the difficulty was then amicably un i satisfactorPy adjusted, and all parties re turned home friends. The difli ulty grew out of a newspaper article published in the Com mercial a short time since. All parties seem to have been good pluck. M'• Kevins has al ready fought three duels in one of wliicn he lost his leg; and Col, Farrow, if we mistake ; not, has fought two, and upon whom we know , there is no discount; and as for Capt- O’tJou ; ner, his-name is a .sufficient guarantee of his gameness. We don't approve of this mode uK adjusting difficulties between man and man, : hut would prefer to submit it to the arbitrament of men rather than weapons. Orders will be promptly filled and RAM BLES SENT of any style* of goods desired, by PECLK. THOMPSON & C 0„ No, 5 Decatur street near Whitehall, At unta, Ga, SI iltligious ®outrcil)tr«j). —We publish, in another column, the correspondence be tween the liev VV- P. Harrison, of the Meth odist E. Church South, and the Rev. J. Jf. Caldwell, of the Methodist E. Church (North) looking to a religious controversy. The latter, we learn, declined to accept the term. The former is now on a visit to this county, and will probably fill the Methodist Church pulpit, in this place, on Sabbath next. QTf)t (Cljcrofctt closed its session in this place, after a pleasant and harmonious conference of three days, on Saturday evening last. The pulpits of both our churches were ably and efficiently filled on Sabbath. There were some twelve or fifteen ministers and as many lay delegates present during the session. The next session of this body will be held in Marietta. CtCioh JHuStt. —We were much delighted at the good music, both vocal and instrumental, discoursed to us by the choir at the Presbyte rian Church in this place, during the recent session of the Presbytery. Its sweet apd hal lowed strains was soul-inspiring and devotional, and filled the house with holy solemnity and revere ntiai awe. We are proud to see an interest being taken by some of our young la dies and gentlemen, in this long neglected but very important part of social worship. May a like interest be manifested in all our churches %.
