The Circus and Jlenssgcrie of Caatello, Barmin n im burgh, Conilnr ’ Fr-.nr an Exchange.] There is no species of public entertainment which lias uck irresist ble fascinations for the <... !(cn n- i e circus. All grownup children w.i, ! car \vi icss to the fact from their own vivid memories, however they may now con demn or commend the entertainment. They cannot forget their early visions of the grand mystery, and how they watched for the hour when its grand cavalcade was to make its high march tlnough the town. What little boy or girl ever ceases to remember as clear as sunlight the first time their eyes fell upon the huge elephant moving in massive might along the way ? And then there are the beautiful |.niiirs, the sinoothe and speck'cd horses, the lion, the tiger—not forgetting the monkeys— and all that sort of thing. In the teeming, tumultuous tide of a great city, the fever does not so gel hold of the boys as it docs when the locomotive establishment ccmes down with ts music and its banners upon the placid life of a country town. Thousands who will glance at this paragraph will remember all this from experience. All children, at some time in their life, go to the circus, and there is a vast number who continue to go whenever suitable opportunity offers from youth to age. There is dissipation in almost every justifiable pursuit and there is no doubt time spent in this di version that should ha?e been given eleswhc-re. We do not pretend to say that the circus is worthy of patronage at all ; but what boy or girl, young or old, was ever harmed in an occasional visit to a well-conductcd establish ment o-‘the kind! We are well disposed to (lie children, and rather incline to put in a word lor them in favor of “going to the circus,’’ We like to se'' the grand equestrianism, the ground and lolly tumbling, the high feaisof physical agility, and to hear the tun of the genuine clown, though yve arc a long way Iroin ti.-v hood. Let the children have their fun, ami iu aiding them in their joys, we will re member and add to our own : “Oh ! dead to memory are these hours When every pathway l“d to flowers; When sticks of peppermint possessed A sceptre’s power to sway the brea t, And heaven was round us while wc fed On rich, ambrosial gingei bread . v It is due to the managers of the circus now in our city to say, as yve can from personal knowledge, that it is conducted with a proprie ty which gives even the most fastidious no occasion fora complaint; and we will add that tin aery immense audienre present, when we locked in upon the performance yosterday evening, was manifestly ot a ble, as vull as decorous character, fin- circus is an ancient institution ; they li. Ia famous one, called Circus Maximus, the grand circus at Rome, in the valley now called Via de Cexchi, the “way of the circus,” It wa- founded some five or six hundred before the birth of Christ, and gradually grew into the most magnificent structure of Rome. Is was nearly a hundred years in building, and when in the time of Constantine was capable of containing half a million ot spectators. It wasaple.ee for games, races, and shows of various kinds, including gladiatorial contests and those .wild beasts. The seats run in throe circular - •> or galleries, in oblong form, around the sam'y art na, much in the form ot the temporary tiers in the big tent of the modern American circus. Through its middle run a low wall, which was adorned with ima. gi'i of deities, giit statues, reliefs, altars, and chaplets : and in the centre rose a magnificent obelisk, 132 feet high, brought by Augustus from Egypt. In the time of Julius Ctesar it 8 length was more than one thousand and eight hundred feet, its width four thous nd feet, and its circumference nearly a mile. The Ciicu» Flamines, erected out of tiie city, was on one occasion flooded with water for a show, under Augustus, and thirty-six crocodiles were killed jn it on the occasion. Sallust had a circus near iis gardens for . hows ol sea-fights. The Vatic-anus yvas completed by Nero. These with those of Flora and Hadrian, were all dc- stroyed. The one, about two miles from the city, attributed to Caracalla, by antiquaries alone remains in good preservation. Modern circuses, various in form and in uses, arc found in European countries, especially i 1 the cities of Spain and Italy --that at Madrid, for buf* “Shts. having room for twelve thousand spec tators, There is a circus in Paris—Cirque tdlimpique —for equestrian games, built in Grecian style, and embellished with statues, ’’’he establishment of Mr. Castello, which I •■do a grand appearance on the streets of the city yesterday, is located at Sixth street ana the canal. Last night the large canvas was crowded, the number prestint being esti mated by a competent judge to be over four thousand, The receipts at the door were, we Lam, nearly two thousand five hundred dol lars. Everybody appeared pleased,'and the ho seback riding of Master Charles Fish was especially admired. This youth bids fair to eclipse tlm champion, lames Robinson.
