Homicide in Rome, Ua.
We learn from a gentleman of this
eily, who was in Rome or. Thursday
last, that that quiet city was, at 4 o’
do. * of that day, the scene of a f'earul
tragedy, the particulars ot winch are as
follows: It appears that Zach Hargrove,
f>qr M a citizen of Home, and now con
ducting a drugstore there, was Provost
Marshal of the place in Confederate
times, and in discharging the duties ol
that position, had occasion to seize a
distillery somewhere- in that region of
country, which at the time gave offense
tothe owner. Mr. Hargrove had heard
nothing further of the circumstances
until Thursday last, when two men
made their appearance m Rome, and,
railing upon Mr. H. at his drug store,
into rated him that they, of one of them
had come (or his blood—had ridden
tort}' miles for that express purpose
and that nothing else would satisfy
diem, Oiir informant does not recolect
the names o( the men, but says one of
them was heavily armed, and made no
effort to conceal his weapons. Mr. H.
endeavored to conciliate the aggrieved
pauy by statuig that he was simply as
a Confederate officer in the perfomiace
ota duty—or obeying a military order
—in seizing the distillery, that it was
not bis purpose at the time to do him
an injury, hoped he would not so re
gard it now, and that there was no ne
cesity whatever for bloodshed in the
matter. This did not satisfy the men,
however, when Mr. Hargrove agreed
that if nothing but **l>loou” would do
them, they could return in an hour
"hen he would be prepared to give
them satisfaction. Upon this they re
t'red, and Mr. Hargrove at once pro
cured a shot gun and
awaited their second coming, hoping
at the same time that the better judg
ment of the two men would prevail, and
that no serious trouble would ensue.—
In this he was mistaken, tor, at the ex
piration oS the hour, the two men ap
proached ihe drugstore in a boisterous,
threatening manner, with pistols in
hand. Mr. Ilaigrove was in readiness
but being still anxious to avert trouble
warned them not to approach nearer.—
At this one of the men tired a shot horn
his pistol, when Mr. Hargrove raised
his snot gun and discharged its contents
of buck-shot into the body of his assail
ant, tire other man taking to his heeis.
i’lie wounded man lived about an hour.
Hargrove sustained no injury save a
Painful wound in the hand, or finger, by
die pistol shot tired at him. These are
die particulars as given to us by one
"ho was presem. Atlanta Intel, of 3rd.
