Cartersvllie.--We haver suid but lit
tle of our thriving town, because its reputation
for prosperity had become so widely spread
that we conceived it needed no extra puffing,
Ita growth and future prospects is the subject
of conversation on nearly every train of pas
sengers which sweeps through it, whether go
ing northward or southward. These passen
gers carry, to the various sections, the inform- ,
ation which is thus gathered concernaig it; I
and hence we are receiving additions to our
citizens from all directions. It is well known
that no town in Georgia has equal led Carters
vilie in rapidity of impro’ement, end we can
aav that these improvements have been made
on home capital, The present stringency in
money matters has effected us as it has other
sections of the Ktatc, and consequently there
is, at present, a check upon our progress ; but
still the saw and -the hammer is being daily
heard, and we know of several buildings pro
jected for erection in the coming spring, We
have the advantege, in these days of money
scarcity, over many portions of the State, in
having a sufficiency of home-made provisions,
We are in no danger of starving, and the coun
ty will have to buy no corn, or but little, from
abroad, The fields of this county are covered
•with good stands of wheat, clover and timothy
uic spreading everywhere, and the busy plow
s turning up the rich glebe tor oats and corn,
We are trusting in the smiles of a kind Pro
vidence, upon the indastry and thrift of our
people, to bring upon us another plentiful har
vest, and then we shall see Cartersville stead
ily growing again,
For the present we content ourself with
these general remarks, but will, from time to
time, hereafter enter more into particulars, so
as to inform and convince our distant readers
that there is no need of turning their eyes to
Honduras, Brazil, California, or Texas, and
leave behind them so fine a section for a per
manent home, as this county is,
Dr. 11. L. Battle.— This gentleman,
having located in this place, tenders his pro
fessional services to the citizens of CartersvfiJe
and vicinity, as will be seen by his card in an
other column of this paper. Dr. Battle is an
old experienced physician, ha"ing been en.
gaged in active practice of medicine for nine
teen years. We commend him to the patron
age of our citizens.
Dentistry.— Dr. F. M. Johnson is stilj
tendering his kindly offices to the citizens of
Bartow and adjoining counties, in his capac ty
as a surgeon dentist. His operations, In his
profession, have given general satisfaction. He
and his practice are too wtll known in this
community for us to say anything in his favor.
Bee his card-
Cox. & Hill, Atlanta.— From an
aevertisement in this paper, it will be seen that
these gentlemen have a large stock of Liquors
and Segars in store. They wish to secure the
entire trade of liquor dealers throughout this
section ol the State, which they have done in
large degree; this added to their extensive
trade in Middle Georgia and Alabama, makes
them the most extensive liquor deeiers in the
South, and their house one of the mos. popular.
Dcmih of Mrs. Geo. W. Hill.—
We are pained to chronicle the death of Mrs,
Hilt., wife of George W. Hill, of this place-
She died at her residence in this place at 2 o’-
alock yesterday morning, after a protracted ill
ness of nearly two months. Her remains wi 1 j
lie interred in the family graveyard near Mrs,
Burges, some seven miles west of Cartersville
to-day, (Friday). We tender to Mr. H.ll and
his grief-stricken family our heart-felt condo
lence in their bereavement; let the pleasing re -
flection that “ your loss is her eternal gain,’’
cheer your hearts.

was seriously if not fatally shot through the

of this place. The woman is not expected to
live. The act is supposed to have been perpe

advertisement in this paper, that anew Dry-

the late stand of Meritt & Meritt, by Mr. J. D,
Head, who has become a permanent citizen
of Cartersville. Mr, H, is a Kentuckian by
birth, and was married in Alabama, he now
comes from
a cordial welcome into our midst, and heartily
wish him success in business. He is a nice,
clever gentleman—a gentleman of prompt bu
siness habits and the most agreeable disposi
tion and pleasant manners. We bespeak| for
him a liberal share of the patronage of our
jwojtle.

the prospect good for still further advances,
Subscribers at Euharlee are noti

week, was attributable to an oversight of the
Postmaster at this place, which, we hope will
cot occur again.

We are pained to learn that our »vor
thy and esteemed friend, J. C. Martin,
who lives on the Col. Mark Johnston
place on the Tenessee Road some five
miles north of this place, happened to
the sad misfortune of getting his corn**
crib with seven or eight hundred bush
els of corn, together with a fine lot of
forage, burnt on Saturday morning just
before day. His loss is not less than
°ne thousand dollars. Supposed to bo

Piaut Shade and Fruit Trees.
The season for transplanting shade
and frufl trees will soon be over, We
are much gratified to see our citizens
so universaily turning their attention to
this important matter this season, es
pecially as regards fruit trees. We
may reasonably look forward to a great J
improvement in the fruits of this climate
of every varrety, within the next three
years.

A Remarkable Fact.
Not one solitary adult person living
in the incorporaiton limits of Carters-,

but very few children 1 . In fact, the
physician might truthfully say that the
state ot health in the community is dis

Marsh & Thomas proclaims to the

cheaper, safer, and more brilliant than

it, because it is softer, not injuring the
eye, aud cleaner because there is no
need of wiping your glass but once a

it explode. Try it, my friends, and
you will then see the utility of the

SMITH'S THIS SYRUP!
FOR THE CURE OF
AGUE AND FEVER
OR
CHILLS AND FEVER.
The proprietor of this celebrated medicine justly
claims tor it a superiority over all remedies ever offer
ed to the public for the safe, certain, spetdu and per
manent cure of Ague and Fever, or Chills and Fever,
whether of short or long standing. He refers to the
enure tvestern and Southwestern country to bear him
testimony to the truth of the assertion, that in no case
w hat ever will it fail to cure, if the directions are strict
ly lollowed and ca ried out. In a great many cases a
single dose has been sufficient for a cure, and whole
families have been cured by a single bottle, with a per
fect restoration of the general health. It is, however,
prudent, and in every case more certain to cure, if its
use is continued in smaller doses for a week or two af
ter the disease hag been checked, more especially in
difficult and long s andmg cases. Usually, this medi
cine will not require auy aid to keep the bowels in
good order; should the patient, however, require a
cathartic medicine, after having taken three or four
doses of the Tonic, a single dose of BULL’S VEGETA
BLE FAM’LY PIIiLS will be sufficient.
