Our Trip.
A lew days since we bait! a flying *is
:to the country. As we went out we
• .ssed through a portion of the moun
tainous region of our county. Our route
was in the direction of Rowland
y wrings. Along this route we saw I
,n;i,'h to admire in nature in the thing |
(.1 mountain scenery, such ss deep rar
~,,, lofty summits, craggy steeps, and
coves and vallies. These were cheq
ued with small farms of considerable
fertility, and watered by beautiful
mountain rivulets and branches, and
n , :; r each farm house was a spring from
which gushed forth the coql, invigora
i,. ; tnd sparkling waters, prominent
nmong which is the noted watering
rlr.ee and summer resort above men
uni “d-Rowland Spriugs. It was only
when we entered the cores and vallies
ths! we saw evidences of life, except
her- and there, in the mountain gorges
in secluded spots, a smoke ascending
from the humble hut of the coal col
lar or timber cutter, Nothing broke
i full monotony ol this wild waste
hut tlie murmuring brook and the chirp
ing ird. Along the watercourses, be
ing on the south side of a range of
mountains, the blooming maple and
no budding poplar added interest to
the sight. The warm and genial rays of
the sun would occasionally penetrate
the mist that overhung the vvllies, re
mil! ling us lorcibly of the returning
no son ot flowers and songs- As we
n» owed those vast continuous mounds
earth thrown up by natures hand, wo
- .voluntarily asked ourself the question
kjw much of untold wealth lies imbed-
ih: beneath their rugged surface in
mineral ores? The enterprise and skill
'-I raan, ; n the future, can only solva
the problem.
O.t our return wo came down the
beautiful valley through which runa
the public highway known a# the Ten
nessee Road. How different the scene
compared to the one we viewed on
- r way up in the morning. Along
this rs>ad for many miles, on either
hand, were the most beautiful farms
tnd plantations we ever saw before
h*rrv thing bore the appearance of life
tnd prosperity. The fields of small
gram, clover and the grasses were un
turpassingly beautiful, while the lands
prepared and being prepared for there
eeption of seed were but little behind
1 b m. Our heart was filled with pride
we beheld the change that has been
wrought in our system ot agriculture
i • whst it was before and during the
"i. . Not a loot of cleared land was
lying idle . The land* were all bro*
Ken or hud been broken up with two”
horse turning plows. The fields
looked smooth and clean, clear of stum
ps, logs 4’c. The fences all alonb the
road had been newly reset. The farm
houses all in good rppair. We thought
to ourselr. as we looked over these
beautiful lands, what folly it was for
our people to be moving to Honduras
*nd Brazil in quest of good land, while
our own beloved Barlow county would
vie with any other country on the
globe in this respect. We wished in
our heart that every discontented man
in the United States of America could
oniy get a glimpse of this beautiful, fer
tile valley, we are confident that the
cry would bo instead of ho for the west
ho for Bartow’ County, Georgia.

about in behalf of this house, which lias

they leave no stone unturned to extend |
their business. They don’t care much j

money, 'i hey advertise liberally all
over the country both in news papers

A Cute P.o&ue.
We learn that the Grocery Store of
A. R. Hudgens, in this place, was bro
ken open, on Saturday night last, and
monev and goods taken therefrom.—
. The thief entered the store by punch
ing out the bricks in the back of the
chimney or fire place. After the thief
emptied the money drawer he set fire
to it, and the bottom of the drawer
was burned through. This incident
should teach the citizens of Carteisvillc
|an important lesson. Very serious re*
I suits sometimes atted very trivial ecus'
I es. A horse-shoe nail once caused
Napoleon Bonaparte to lose a victory.
We hare sorely felt, within the last few
years, thelosses incurred by fires—
Our thriving town, which has just be.
gun to recover from the effects of dis
tructive conflagrations, is liable to be
visited by the deesolating flames again
at any time. Let us act the part of
wisdom by taking precautionary steps
while we can, to prevent a repetition
of these awful dieasters, by employing
a sufficient guard to patrole our streets
during the night, and keeping watch
guard over our persons and property
while we are slumbering. The times
demand it. Thieves and incendiaries
infest our town and country. Our
houses will be fired for the sake of
plunder. If our town council is not
able to employ a sufficient force to pro
tect our intere&l, let the citizens agree
to submit to additional taxation to raise
the necessary means to secure this very
desireable end: We have no fire com.
pany nor even hooks and ladders to as
sist in extinguishing fires, nor have we
any protection for person or property j
against the invasions of light fin |
geredgentry. Will we still cry oui
peace and safety while these evidences
of danger so often occur in our midst?
Let us awake to our interest, and in a
time of peace piepare for war.
Election of COunt j r Officers. Ac.
We stated last week that all of the
county officers except Justices of the
Peace, were to be appointed under the
new constitution; but find that we were
mistaken, they are to be elected by the
people. The election will commence
on or about the 20th day of next month
There is but little lime to work in so
those who expect to be candidates had
better hand in their cards at an early
day. if they wish the announcement
made in our paper. We make some
annnouncemetUs this week to which vve
invite attention. There is also a Gov
ernor, and members of Congress to be*
elected at the same time. Whp they
are we are not vet advised so far as the
Democratic and Conservative party is
concerned. There are also members
of the Legislature to be elected. We
learn that Mr. W. L. Goodwin is a
candidate for that position in this coun
ty. There will be other candidates
we suppose. The candidates are all
to be voted for at the same time that
the vote is cast tor the rejection or rati
fication of the constitution. Let us do
all we can to have good and competent
men elected to fill the various offices*
Let us vote for men who are identified
with us in interest and feelings. Men
who understand our wants and who
will represent our rights faithfully ar,d
promptly.
Estrella Oil.
We are requested by Mr. P. Marsh,
to state to his “numerous patrons, that
his Estrella oil has been ordered for a
number of days, but ha3 not yet come

the line of railroad, and he is doing all
he can to have it forwarded. He begs
his customers not to become impatient,
but to keep their souls in patience, they
shall have it at the earliest possible
day.
N. B.—Since writing the above Mr.

come to hand, and ho is now prepared
to supply 1 his customers by the quart,

The proprietor of til's celebrat and medicine justly

whether of short or long standing. He refers to the
em ire VVeste.u and Sou'hwestern country to bear him
testimony to the truth ol she assertion, tiiat in no case
whatever will it fail to cure, if the directions are strict
ly lolluwed and ca ried out, la a great many cases a
ingle dose lias oeen sufficient for a cure, and whole
families have ceen cured by a single bottle, with a per
fect restoration of the general health. It is, however,
prudent, and in every case more certain to cure, if its
use is continued in smaller doses for a week or two at
ter the disease has been checked, more especially in
difficult and 1 ug sand ng cases. Usually, mis medi
cine will not require a y aid to keep the bowels in
good order; should the patient, however, require a
