Ihe1 he Land We Love
THE HAVERSACK.
At the beginning of the rebellion
Abolition rule, all Confederate
Generals of every grade received pre
cisely the same pay, viz: three hundred
and one dollars (@301) P«r month.—
Many were the discussions held and
many were the conjectures as to the
precise meaning of the odd dollar, when
the popular idea was hit bv the witi
r:sm of a South Carolina soldier:
The three hundred dollars are to P a >
for what the Generals make us do an •
the one dollar is for what they do them
selves!”
We regret that the Fetisch Conven
tion at Charleston did not fix lheir(p* r
diem) at eleven dollars and one-el' v
enth of a rent, It would have 8f rv ° l
to keep alive the recollection o the Jcu
(Pesprit upon Confederate salaries.
A lady at Winchester Va,, sends us
a couple of anecdotes over the signa
ture of Mignonne. Our rule is to hav e
the name- in full or reject the commit'
nication. Sot as our fair young friend
expects to change her name, a noin de
p'wne in her case is admissible. V\ ben
certain expected addresses have mi .'
the lady’s address permanent, we hope
to bear from her again. She says.
Thinking it strange that the Haversack
is not better supplied with anecuo.es
from the valley of Virginia, so rich
incidents of soldier life, I send the All
owing ns an experiment.
It was well-known throughout the
Army’ that Jackson’s favorite and first
love was the Ist Brigade, bette r known
as the “Stonewall” brigade. It was
always “put in” where the enemy was
most stubborn and hardest to break, as
broken he was sure to be eventually.
The morning after the battle of Port
Republic, when the boys were worrte
out with hard marching and harder
fighting aud were resting on their arms
Chaplain dashed tip.
“What news?” cried out many eagei
voices, “where are the Yankees”;
“With Old Nick. I hope,” piously
replied the chaplain.
“Well I don’t,” feelingly replied one
of the jaded boys, “for if old Stonewall
knew that they were there, he would
send the Ist brigade after them!”
We girls of the Valley did not believe
implicitly in the trite maxim that‘beau
ty when unadorned, is adorne 1 the
most,” and we made strenuous efTorts
to save our prettiest dresses and orna.
inents from the fingers of “the restor
ers of the Union,” son that we might
appear in our bravest attire when our
soldiers came along. And we were
equally careful to wear our ugliest and
plainest clothes when the Yanks held
the town. This rule was not confined
to the ladies, but extended to the few
men left behind. A gentleman, who
wished to do justice to our ro! titers who
had just driven the Yanks oui’of town
put on anew white suit, which had
just run the blockade, lie rode along
a line of Confederates, displaying his
store clothes to the best advantage.—
But the boys thinking that he ought to
he in the army, not only daubed him all
over with mud, but applied to him some
very uncomplimentary remarks.
“If you don’t take care, my sweet
youth, you’ll get your clothes muddy. ”
“Who’s your washer-woman?” “How
much do you ax for that are shroud of
vourn?” “Mister, what m ikes you
have mud on your Sunday clothes?”
All these and mmv morn taunts our
hero bore most manfully. until a loner
lank, lean specimen of the so-called
from the late State of Alabama, stepped
up and said, “you darnb white-coated
white-livered exempt, when did yon
die?”
Miss M igimnne’s anecdote of the
Stonewall brigade, re-calls one, which
we know to be authentic. The enemy
was repoited to be just ahead, and Gen.
J. rode up to his favorite command
with a bright smile upon his face. —
The boys were in no smiling humor
however, they were hungry and tired
and-the proposal of a hard “set-to,”
upon empty stomachs was not very
cheering. The General raw the gloom
and hoped to dispel it by good news.
“Well boys,” said he, “I'll let you
lead off again. Tin going to give you
the post of honor once more.”
“Thank you kindly, General,” said
a hungry lello*v, “we have had hon
or enough, we would rather have a
little bread and meat just now.’
One of our gallant Tar-heels sends
us trom Fayetteville, N. C. the next
two anecdotes;
The anecdote in your May number
of the applicant for a Lieutenancy, who
if he couid’nt stand an examination,
was at least willing to stand a fight
with the Examining Board, •‘reminds
me of a little anecdote” of an officer n
the North Carolina regiment < f winch
1 was a member.
A Lieutenant of the regiment (who,
at home, followed the tradeof a tanner)
was, by the Colonel, deemed incompe
tent, hrougiit before the Examining
Board, and found to be totally until for
the position. Talking the matter over
afterwards., with some of his friends,
he remarked.
“Well, meby, I don’t know how to
drill a company, don’t understand tac
tics, regulations and sieh, hut you or
terjest sec me taks the har off of a
hide.”
