Our office was favored with a visit
on Monday last, by that veteran of the
press, Mr. Isaac C. Morgan, who has
passed his three score years and dates
the beginnii/g of his experience in the
printing business in 1820. Although
just recovering from fever and ague,
he wa3 looking well, and we are glad
to see him able to be out again. He
is a native of the Palmetto State, which
may well be proud of him as an accom
plished printer and courteous gentle
man.

JtoaTA press of other matter prevents
us from giving proceedings oi the trial
of Columbus prisoners. The evidence
of the prosecution has closed, and when
sifted, by the defence, will develop the
deep corruption of moral sense, dis

male outcasts from society. “The ad

We look with anxious interest for

Carterflville ft Van Wert Rail
road.
\
COMMUNICATED.
Mr. Editor :— Permit mp, through
the columns of the Express, to call the
attention of the citizens of Cartersville
and vicinity, to the importance of this
enterprise, and especially to the ncc
esity for immediate action, if they
would secure their present and future
interests. The almost total indfferenc
which has heretofore, and is up to
this time manifested by our people-our
business men. and property owners, in
this Railroad, can only he accounted
for upon the supposition that they do
not understand its importance. Not
only has indifference been manifested
in this matter, but some of our most
promiue-nt business men have. I learn
actually opposed the project on the
ground that the building of the road
would be detrimental to the interests
of the place. Those who thus think
are, probably, not aware of the deter,
mination on the part of the people of
Van Wert and Cedar valley to have a
Railroad out-let to some point, to an
swer the growing demands cf their sec
tion. We learn that they are d’termin
ed to build a road to this or some oth
er point ; that they are able to build
it of themselves, and will suffer no
posl-ponement of the matter. Being
allied to Cartersville by neighborhood,
and natural advantages in the topog
raphy of the country, they have sought
it as their point of connection with the
W. &, A. Railroad, and procured their
charter tv this place, expecting to re
ceive the countenance and to some ex
tent, the cooperation of the place to
be benefitted by being the terminus cf
this road.
If, now, we turn the cold shoulder to
them, frown upon their enterprise, and
show a disposition to keep them in the
back woods, we may very naturally
expect them to abandon us, and seek
some other channel of outlet; to select
some other city, more liberally dispos
ed, and enterprising, which shall be
the fortunate recipientof those teeming
products and of that thrilty trade,
which has done more than all other
things combined to bring Cartersville
to her present pitch of business, activis
ty and prosperity. We are reliably
informed that the business men of At
lanta are fully alive to the importance
of this subject, and have actually pro
posed to the President of this company
to take all the stock necessary to build
the Road, if he will only have Carters
ville stricken out of the charier, and At
lanta inserted.
This is r,o idle tale. We have it
from the most undoubted authority.—
How easy it would be for them to do
this thing, now that the Legislature is
in Session in Atlanta ? And wdio
could blame this Company to turn,
with disgust, from a people so stupidly
blind to their own interests, so' want
ing in enterprise, and so foolishly ap
prehensive oi danger from a quarter
from which the most beneficial results
should be expected.
It may be answered that the times
are hard, money scarce, trade dull, and
hence, that people are not in condition
to go into enterprises of this kind. If
times are hard, and trade dull now,
what w ill be our condition when At
lanta shall have stretched out her iron
arms on both sides of us, and shipped
us of four-fifths of our trade. Already is
she grading a Railroad through North
East Georgia, in the direction of Gains
ville, that will divert two-thirds of our
mountain trade. Will our citizens
maintain their apathy on this subject,
and continue to fold their arms in ut
ter indifference to their most vital in
terests, while Atlanta, enterprising,
progessive Atlanta, vulture like, shall
swallow up, in her rapacious maw, the
rich products of all those regions which
are ours, almost by birth-right ?
Shame and contusion overtake the
slothful and laggard ; wealth, prosper
ity and happiness the boon of enterprise
and energy. No people deserve to
prosper who are devoid of public spir«
it. Then wake up, citizens of Car
tersville ! Rouse yourselves to a sense
of the importance of this great enter
prise ! Build this road, and it will
lead to the building of another at no
distant day in an opposite direction ;
build this Road, and ere long Carters
ville will be a flourishing city, the proud
metropolis of one of the most favor
ed regions of country in the South—uu
surpassed in the richness of its min
erals, the fertility of its soil, the puri
ty of its w ater and the salubrily of its
climate.
A meeting of the stockholders in
tills Road is called, by the President,
Dr. Stephens, at Cartersville. on Sat
urday next, (11th inst,) and every bo.
dy who teels an interest is invited to
attend. Let our citizens turn ottt en
masse , and encourage the enterprise
by their presence, and take stock ac
cording to their means. This is a last
chance offered us. If we let it slip,
we commit suicide, and the days of
Cartersville’s prosperity and great
ness, are numbered.
A Citizen.

The proprietor of this celehnt and med'eine justly
claims for it a superiority over all remedies ever offer
ed to the pu lic tor the soft, certain speedy and per
manent cure of Agu» and Fever* or Cldtts aud Fever,
whether of short or long standing. He refers to the
entire Western and Southwestern eourttry to bear him
testimony to the truth of the assertion, that in no case
whatever will it fail to cure, if the directions are strict
ly followed and ca ried out. In a great many cases a
single dose ha3 been sufficient for a cure, and whole
families have l een cured by a single bottle, with a per
fect restoration of the general health It Is, how-ver,
prudent, and in every case more certdn to cure, if its
use is continued in smaller doses for a week or two af
ter the disease has been checked, more especially in
difficult and long s and’ng cases. Usually, this niedt
