•crcter tells of a Georgia soldier, who
4jfSng the late gigantic war, compoe

which he enclosed in a neat envelope
and perfnmed, we suppose, with

Accept this boqnet frot 1a ft How, !
Who oft has hurd the kan ms bi llow,
Has listened to the fifes a tooten,
And helped to do a hetip of stmotin,
Has seen the war cl unis darkly rise,
Like fifty buzx.irda when they flite,
Who now is bigger than his dad,
And wants to marry mighty bad.
Does Advertismo Pst ?—As an evi- j
dence that advertising will pay, we j
cite an instance rehAed by the Cov
ington (Kv,) Journal: Not long since
a lot of ground in that city was sold
at C ormnissioner’s sale for the sum of
SIO,OOO. The ground belonged to an
anvalid heir, and was advertised as
the existing law of the State requires
such sales to be ad vertisod two —by
two or three written or printed notice* ,
stuck up at designated points. It is
probable that half dozen j ersons, be
sides those directly interested, knew
anything about the sale. The proper
ty was known to be worth more than
the price at which it wa struck off;
and some of the friends of the invalid
interposed, and in her behalf made
application to the Circuit Court to set
the sale aside, on the ground that the
property had not brought its value.—
The necessary bonds having l>een filed,
the sale was set aside and had a re
sale ordered. Thes< proceedings had
the effect to advertise the property
pretty extensively, and the result was
that at the last sale an advance of
about twenty per cent, was obtained.
Then we advise our mercantile
friends in view of the fact that adver
tising pays,
“To hang out their banners on the walls,
The doors wide open fling;
For everybody loudly calls,
To see the goods for spring.”
The Mayor of Mobile recently mar
ried a colored couple. After the cere
mony, the husband said, “Massa Ca
leb, you has forgotten something.”—
“What is it, ▲ - run ?” asked the
Mayor. “Why, you ain’t buss the
bride.”
Miss Clara Barton wishes the Gov
ernment to give her its old hospital ,
eta, to be converted into workshops
for the colored race. Clara means

New song for office seekers:
I want to be a brother-in-law,
Aud with my kinsmen stand;
An appointment in my pocket,
The stealings in my hand.
If you haven’t business, adver
tise; rs )ou have bu iness, advertise.
People go to places that are advertis
ed, aud they go by those that are not.
A place that advertises is known to the
world; that which does not is only
known to the few that may pass it,
and pretty much every body does the
latter.
An ocnusr.ors Insult t > our Colo>
rt> Soldiers. —We are informed by the
and lily press that “the Indians of the
pia.ns will not take sculps from the
heads of negro soldiers killed in bat
tle”
Is not this a flagrant violation of
the spirit of the civil rights bill, of the
new amen Indents to the Constitution,
avl of the reconstruction policy of
Congress ?
This is the cro’w.iing insult to our
colored citizens.
Shill the red skins be allowed so
thus miles depletions on account of
race or color ?
When the colored troops fight
bravfdy, may those untaxed ludians
scorns their scalps as being no trophy
worth the taking off?
TuU coate nptu ns treatment of
the black man by the red man is not to
be borne.
Senator Summer must attend to
to this.
He must prepare resolutions.
He must fulminate speeches against
the noble red man of the forest, who,
when on the war path, dares to show
a savage disrespect to wool !
He has abolished the word “white” ;
in the District of Columbia, let him •
abolish the word “black” on the pi tins, j
Let him cause it to be enacted that |
when the untaxed red skin says—
“ Ugh, bis? Indian no scalp nigger !”
somebody shall shoot him on the spot.
It is not because of the difficulty
of taking off the colored man’s scalp.
No such thing.
Indians scalp very short haired
vthite soldiers,
It. is their contempt for the negro as
an inferior lace.
They must be taught better.
Here is a missionary work to do.
Nnd new stipulation should be made
in all Indian treaties, that no distinc
tion of race or eo'or shall be made
with the scalping knife
The insult is too cutting.—Boston
