Editor Constitution: Green Spencer
killed Richard Smith to-day, in a fight,
with a repeater. Both yqung men,
sons of citizens of this county. Spen
cer is a painter and Smith was a bar
keeper—both wild. Said to have fal
len out about a gambling debt- Balls
took effect in Smith’s breast, head and
back, producing death instantly.
Spencer immediately fled, and, lip to
this time, has not been arrested. But
there are a large number of men in
pnrsuit. The killing was done in the
streets of this place.
Bartow.
P. S.~ It is said that Spencer shot
'five times, each ball taking affect; and
that Smith was unarmed. John
Smith, the father of the deceased, lives
a few miles from town, and -6 an ex
cellent man. It is believed now, that
Spencer has made good his escape.
(Atlanta Constitution 26th.
Win. Spencer, the father of Green
Spencer, and his son-in-law —Bradley,
have both been arrested, and arraign
ed before the Justice Court, and com
mitted to jail to await their trial, the
former as accessory to the murder, and
the latter as accessory after the mur
der in aiding the murderer to flee
from justice. The case will probably
be tried to-day. The last heard from
young Spencer, was that he took the
train at Adairsville, and has gone to
parts unknown.

The Graveyard Question.
Mu E utor — I see ill yotir issue, of

reference to the graveyard, on the hill,
in the roar of the Baptist church.—
{lfoil will pardon your correspondent,
as he is one who never writes for the
j public eye, and would not now, if he
did not feel so deeply interested.—
i “Out of the abundance of the heart the
> month speaketh.” Ever / one who has
a calculating mind can readily see. by
figuring a little, that half an acre of
ground is insufficient for burial pur
poses, in a tow’ll with such a popula
tion, present and prospective, as Car
tersville. It is absurd to insist upon
the enlargement of tho ground at its
present location. The absolute imme

suitable—affording ample . room for
white and black—laid off with system
and order, may' be conceived by all, if
they will examine the case.

them at the rate of three or four a

the place—its actual demands.

The Middle Cherokee Baptist
Association convened, in this place, on
Friday last, and continued in session
until last Monday morning, when it
adjourned. The attendance was not |
very large, though interesting. The
equinoxial gale setting in on Friday
interfered somewhat with the services,
and, doubtless, prevented many from
coming. Everything passed off har
moniously and pleasantly, and noth
ing transpired to mar the good feel
ings that existed between all denomi
nations, or the public, save the mur
der of young Richard Smith, which
cast a gloom over the minds and
hearts of both citizens and visitors.
Cuba’s sugar crop is estimated this
year at 3,313,000 boxes, 600,000 less
than last year.
What the South is Doino.— The
Southern papers generally, as we have
said, anticipate a cotton crop of about
3,000,000 bales of cotton, which valu
ed at SIOB per balo (say 455 pounds
at twenty-five cents,)'will give $324,-
000,000; also a corn crop of 285,000,-
000 bushels, valued at $230,000,000:
and the sugar, wheat, tobacco ai:d
other crops will vdeld $150,000,000
more, giving in all a product of not
less than $704,000,0 0, which, with a
population of not over 11,600,000, will
show an average of SO4 per head,
which largely exceeds that of Northern
and Western States. The State of
South Carolina will this year v’ield
products worth $50,000,000, which,
with her population of not over 670,-
000. will show an average of $74 62
per head. In any portion of the South
fine lands under cultivation can be
bought at from $5 to $9 per acre,
which in a few years will be worth five
times the purchase money. The cli
mate is exceedingly salubrious, and
offers no insuperable hindrance to the
manual lab >r of the white man, as is
proved by tbe fact that there are now
no less than 200,000 whites cultiva
ting cotton with their own hands.—
And if white men fail to furnish the
required amount of labor and .he ne
gro turns out badly, there’s Kiop
mancheap and his millions of Chinese
for our Southern friends to fall back
upon.—Courier Journal.
Secession of a Conference of a
Notherx Church to the Methodist
Church South.— The Rev. J. Ditzler,
who was appointed, last yeftr, by
Bishop McTyeire to Indiana, reports
progress. A conference was lately
held at Westport, at which he was
present and assisting. The ministers
and members of this organization, we
believe, were originally of tho Metho
dist Episcopal Church North, but they
withdrew from it on account of its po
litical utterances. V* r e are glad thyy
find in our church a platform and oa
sis of union. We have a welcome for
all who love a non-political Methodism.
It will be remembered that our con
ference in Illinois, now well organized
and progressive, had a similar begin
ning.
Resolved, By this annual Conference
now in session at Westport, Decatur
county, Indiana, August 21,1869, that
wo do hereby adopt the principles,
rules and regulations of said Metho
dist Episcopal Church South, as set
forth in her discipline, to become
thereby a conference of said church:
Provided, That this action, with prop
er explanations, be submitted, after
qJQ notice, say from four to eight

The Southern Lor Octo

farmers in all the Southern Slates. —
Its corps of contributors is unrivalled.
We notice that the publishers continue
to furnish to new subscribers, the lst

many years from menstrual irregularity, and
have been treated without benefit by various
medical doctors, were, at length, completely
cured by one bottle of Dr. J. Hradficl.Vs Fa

duty to furnish this- certificate, with the hope
