UtPRE3ENTATTYE FROM HARRISON. j la early days ol<l Nat Ha:riscm was J felcciX’d to the from this i eoiinfy, said aft How, as \ve wt ro all : seated around the stove in the little he-el at Hcdaius Jerry, Hamilton coun ty Illinois. Old Nat was a regular old brick.— He was elected just because there was no one to ran against him. Our coun try was rather bad off for intelligent people in those days. A few days* af- I ter old Nat had gone to Springfield to attend to the duties of his office, I hap-1 pened to be there on business of a pri vate character, and tine king he would 1 he glad to hear from the folks at home, j I concluded to call on him at the i Praire House and inquire after his j health. “I’ve been well, Tom,” said bo “but i I got awfully scared the first night I ! stayed in tins ’ere darned place.’ ‘How was that ?’ I inquired. ‘Well,’ said Nat, ‘l’il tell yen all about it. You see that fellow there behind the counter; the fellows here call him the hard—well, I told him I wanted my bed, so I’d know where to sleep when I’d come in after a while. He took me up stairs to a room; and sai l I could sleep there, and went down. I took good notice of it—brown door with yaller streaks Imre and there, and white yearthen 1 >ck handle. I; started down a thinkin’ about this, and ! I wouldn’t look at another door for 1 fear I’d get ’ ni kinder mixed up in my head, and then forget which was mine. ‘About twelve o’clock that night I came in with a half grown hummin’ in my head, and the very first thing I found at the top of the stairs, was my own identical door, with the yaller streaks and white lock handle. ‘Good,’ says I, and in I lumbers. I walked up to the bed, and what do you think ? Why, I finds one of your long-legged, black-whiskered town fellers in it, fast asleep. I takes him by the beard, rears him up on his end, and gives him a short sarment; tells liim to leave as quick as doubletriggers, or I’ll kick you down stairs; tells him I don’t want to nuther, for I am a member of the Legislature, the Representative from Hamilton, but if I got to fight ing he’d find me to be a lull team.— The fellow looked awfully scared, and without saying a word he got up very humble like, and started for his dry begun to undress and says I to him, ‘draw on them dudds and toddle irom here, for I’ll be cussed if I’—turning around at the same time to look fieic er at him, sees him a cornin’ at ine with one of the drotiede&t butcher knives in the world. ‘Well, thought I, Nat, you’ve got yourself in a close place, by jingo, and so we begun to lumber around the room like the very nation. Here I went, and here he come. At last I got between him and the door, and out I shot. ‘This beat all hell,’ said I; ‘a Rep resentative to the Legislature treated in this way.’ I went down stairs and told the fellow behind the counter that some cuss was in my room. ‘No, I guess not,’ said he; perhaps there is some mistake —your room is No. B.’ ‘Thinks I perhaps there may be some mistake; and so I goes back opened the eight door and went in, feeling ; certain that it was picked out for me. j A candle was burning on the table, by ; the light of which I saw that some per son was in the bed. Not feeling in clined to kick up another fuss, I con cluded to crawl in with him and say nothing about it. In a very short time I was in bed and ready to sleep. I had not been in bed long before the door opened and a young man and woman came into the room and took seats by the candlestand. t _ j ‘Something else on hand, Nat, thought I to myself, ‘but let ’em rip.’ ‘They lc oked very serious at first, it finally wore off, and they got to chatting* very lovingly, and huggin’ and kissin’ a little. I was delighted with the performances, and thought the feller in the bed with me ought to see it and enjoy the fun, too, so I whispered to him— ,:Say Captain, old boss, jest look up.’ ‘They both started up like a shock in’ mill had touched ’em, and they seemed to be awfully scared, till the gal said, ‘it was only the wind blown! agin the winder.’ ‘They soon got to huggin’ and kiss in’ and as I could not rouse our friend I thought I’d jest have a little fun to myself. ‘Slips,’ says I, just as they was fetch ing their lips together, and up they sprung like lightning, and loped for the door, but as fortune would have it, the young feller had dropped the key, and he couldn’t git out. ‘Never mind, ’ said I, ‘it’s fun for me as well as y r ou. I love to see sich things agoin’ on.’ This seemed to scare ’em more than ever. . ‘lt was too rich to enjoy alone and I determined to wake up my bed fel ler. I slapped my hand on his chin; it was cold as ice. ‘Thunder and St. Louis, Nat,’ said I, you’re in bed with a dead man, and without waiting to consider the mat ter, I sprang to the floor. The young sters gave a loud squall, fetched agm the closed door, and I pitched with ’em, which resulted in smashing the darned thing open. Without waiting for ceremony or formalities we bolted for the stairs. Hearing the racket, the landlord, who occupied a room still further back, came bolting after us. Catching a glimpse of him I took to bo the dead man, and so I put all i steam on, and ran close in wake of the io»ers. I con’d not pass them, howev i er, for tiny were frightened out of heir senses having no idea but 1 was die deceased in close pursuit. In this condition we all tumbled promis u ms !y down stai-s into the bar-room. , go and take sorm-hir-; noss said Nat, but don’t say anything ! about this when yen gee homo, J.p Hah ly m-ght be uneasy about me!’ .lokli Billing*’ Female Remarks. Dear Girls, are yu in search ova husband? This is a bumper, ar.d you are not required tew say ‘Yes’ out loud, but vou are expected tew throw your eves down unto the earth, az tho vu wa'i looking for a pin, and reply to the in terrogatory with a kind of and. mini sigh, az though yu was eating an oys ter, juice and all, off from the half shell. Not tew press such a theme until it j bekurps a thorn in the flesh, w- wifl | presume (tew avoid argument) that you are on the lookout for sumthing in the male line tew boost you in the iip hill of lite, and to keep his eyes on the breeching when yu begin lo go. down on the other side of the moiin- i tain. Let me givo you sum nr all! caunks of advice how tew snot yui\: fewter husband: I. The man who is jealous of even little at ten.shun which yu git from sum other fellow, yu will find after yu are married to him, luvs himself more than lie duz yu, and what yu mistook for solicitude, yu will diskover has changed into indifference. Jeliousy isn t a heart disease, but a liver c<un plaint. 2. A mus*n c b is not indispensable; it is only n little more hair, and iz n good dctil Ike moss and o’her excres cences— often does the best on silc that won’t rai e anything else. Don't forgit. that those things which yu ad mire in a phcliow before marriage yu will probably have tew admire in a husband after, and a must ash will git tew be very weak diet after a long time. i P husbands could be took on tri al, az Irish cooks are, two-thirds ov them would be returned; but there don’t seem to be eny law for this.— 1 herefore, girls, yu will see that after yu git a man, yu have got tew keep lnm, even if you loss on him. Conse quently, if yu have got enny keld vii tte* 1 jftjfeftlNlltint-iriJifj-anq Iro take some more, he iz a man who when Blue Monday cuma will wasn well. 4. Don’t marry a plieller who is al ways a telling how his mother duz things. It iz az hard tew suit these men as it iz tew wean a young one. 5. If a young man ken beatyu [lay iug on a planner, and kant hear a fish horn playing in the street without turning a back surumersett mersett on account of the mu sick that j iz in him, I say tbip him; he might] answer tew tend babe, but if you s< t! him hoeing out your garden, you wi I find that you have got tew do it your self. A man whoze whole heft lies in musiek (and not very hefly at that) ant no better for a husband than soed litz powder; but if ho lava to listen while vu sing sum gentle ballud, you will find him mellow and no soft. But don’t marry ennybody for jist one vir tow, enny quicker than yu would flop a man for one fault. 6. It iz one of the most tuffest things for a female tew be an old maid suc cessfully. A grate menuy hoz tried it and made a bad job ov it. Everybody looks upon old maids just as they do upon driedyarbs—in thegarrutt, han dy for sickness—and therefore, girls, it ain’t a mistake that yu should be will in to swop yourselph oph with some trew phellow for a husband. The swop is a good one, but don’t swop for euny man who is respektod jist be cause his father iz. You had better be an old maid for 4 thousand years, i and then join the Shakers than to buy | repentance at this price. No woman ! ever mrde this trade who didn't git either a phool, a mean cuss or a clown for a husband. 7. In digging down into this subject I find the digging grows harder the further I git. It is much easier tew, inform yu who not tew marry than who tew, for the season thax-e iz more oi them. I dont think yu will, foller my ad visse, if I give it; and, therefore, I will keep it, for I look upon advise as Ido upon caster ile—a mean does to give, and a mean does to take. But I must say one thing, girls, or spile. If yu can find a brigt-eyed, healthy and well balloosted boy, who looks upon poverty as sassy az a child i looks upon wealth —who had ratk ier sit down on the curb-stun, in fm.it ; ov the sth avenue hotel, and eat a ham ! sandwitch than tew go inside and run ;in debt for hiz dinner and tooth pick —one who iz armed with that kind ov ' pluck that mistakes a defeat for a vic i tory, mi advice iz tew take him, body I and soul—snare him at unst, for he is ■ a stray trout of a breed very skase in ! our waters. Take him, I say, and ; bild onto him, as hornets bild onto a j tree. —New York Weekly.
