I*:ae Log District.
A \’e paid a hasty visit to this por- j
tiou of our county, on Saturday last, j
und was much rejoiced to witness tlie |
evidences of thrift we saw on every
hand. We spent Friday night with
our old friend, A. J. Weems, who owns
n tine section of land, and lives boun
tifully. He informed us that he had
about 100 acress of laud seeded down
in clover and the grasses—keeps im
proved stock, and they all look fat and
sleek. No community can boast of a
better citizen than A. J. Weems. Tlie
next place we visited was Possum Trot s
familiarly known as “the Trot.” It is
a small village of 30 or 40 inhabitants,
store, wood and smith shops, Post-office
and a splendid mixed school, under
the supervision of the Masonic frater
nity, taught by Rev. J. M. Brittain.
It is a very healthy locality, and the
school is in a very nourishing condi
tion. Mr. B. is a ripe scholar, experi
enced teacher, and Christian gentle
mn.iv
From “Tlie Trot” we went to old
Pine Log M. E. Church, where now
bleeps the dust of old father Header-;
aon and bis wife, side by side, besides
many other old citizens of that Dis-1
trict. The Church is a large one, num
bering over 200 members, under the !
'charge of ltev It. H. Jones, in whose j
company we were traveling. At this
point, before the war, was located a
Camp-Ground, the last vestige of
which is now gone. As we viewed the
spot, once covered by the arbour, we j
wondered to ourself to how many
souls wa j that the sweetest spot of
earth recorded in their memory, by
reason of what the good Lord had done
for them there in days gone by. From !
there we went to Sunshine M. E.;
Church four miles above near the
edge of Gordon County: all along
the route, we were much pleased to
look at the beautiful valley and creek
bottom" farnis that spread out on ei
ther hand. The lovely meadows, and
beautiful grass and clover fields, to-:
gether with the clear, limpid mountain
streams of water, gave the country a
picturesque .appearance. The tower
ing ridges, although too rugged for
cultivation, afford the finest range for
ertoek. Sheep raising here is being
made very profitable, and no telliug
to what extent it can and will be car
ried. We were surprised to see so
much clover ai\d grass lands. Fine
fruit trees, Ac. As we returned home
we came down the valley through
which the Tennessee Road runs, and
our hearts throbbed with emotions of
commingled joy and pride, as we look
ed out upou the magnificent planta
tions that spread out upon both sides
of the road from Fairmount to Car
tersviUe, a distance of 21 miles. We
think we can truthfully say that it
cannot be surpassed in the South.—
The lands are generally well prepared
for the reception of the seed, which
will soon be deposited there, and
Providence smiling we may expect to
hear a good report from along that
line next autumn. We always did
think that we had the garden spot of 1
j Creation in Bartow Comity, and every
trip we make into tlie country confirms i
us the more in the opinion. ;

Spring lias come upon us all of a
sudden. Peach trees are blooming,
clover and wheat fields look green and
the voice of tlie plowman is heard in
the laud. Eschewing politics, our
farmers are addressing themselves to
the cultivation of the sc it May Cod

Wc are pleased to sec hands ou tlie
W. & A R. It., near our town, improv
i iti" the condition of the track, which
i had become very much dilapidated,
and dangerous. New ties and new
iron are much needed, in places. Now '
that the weather has improved, we i
hope the Road will soon bo put in
I good condition; the business over the
j Road is heavy.
Cotton has advanced in the last
week so that a good article could be
sold at 20cts. We advise our farmers
j to sell as the price is good.
Any one casting about for a home
would do well to examine upper Geor

Limestone, and Freestone and condu- i
ci\e to health; the land is rich, pro
ducing wheat, oats, corn, clover and
all the grasses to perfection, while the
couuties of Bartow and Floyd, in ad- I
dition to the above products, yield a
good crop of cotton. Cartersville is
situated iu the midst of oue of the fin-;
est sections in the South, being in the
valley of the Etowah, along whose
banks lie vast bodies of rich soil, capa
ble of sustaining many thousands; the
same can truthfully be said of the
land on her tributary creeks. No
1 wonder that our town has risen from
its ashes so soon, after the tires of
war had been extinguished by peace,
for such soil and productions are ca
pable of sustaining large towns, there
fore we would say to any person seek
ing a home, come and look at us, and
our line valleys and pitch in your lot
with ours.
We are pleased to greet our friend,
J. H. Ruckman, once more, who has
been for some time in Virginia on
business.
The attendance at court is not large.
Our farmers arc wisely at home pre
paring for a heavy crop. Success to
them.
J. M. Holbrook, Atlanta, Ga.—This
very popular and enterprising gentle
man, who is located at No. 40, White
hall street, as will be seen in our ad- j
vertising columns, has just returned
from New York, and is receiving the
largest and finest stock of men’s and
boys’ hats ever offered to the trade in
this market. He has also on hand a
superb stock of ladies’ and misses’ hats
for jobbing. With large experience in
the trade, and purchasing in the New
York market recently during the gold j
panic, upon the most advantageous
terms, Holbrook is prepared to offer
to buyers articles in his line upon very
advantageous terms, all of the very la
test styles and fashions. Read his ad
vertisement and give him a call. It is
to the advantage of all to do so.
If you want some of the best Ap
ple Butter in the world, go to Guthrie’s.
He got it to sell, and will do it, so, if
you wish to try a can of it, go and get
it at once, before it is all gone.
I*ersonaS.
We were pleased to see in our office,
on Tuesday last, Brothers D win ell, of
the Rome Courier, and Whidby, of the
Atlanta ConAilulion. Both gentlemen
showed evidences of thrift in their good
looks and cheerful spirits, and give a
good account of their respective valua
ble journals, whereof we are rejoiced.
Satterfield, Pyron & Cos. are selling
good Shaker Bonnets at 10 cents.
ffcjrCol. Turalin has bought part of
the Solomon farm, lying in this place,
and is preparing to open Erwin Street
up to* his door, and also throw upon
the market a considerable number of
building lots, along said street.
If you want a genuine Alexander
Kid Glove, go to the New Store of Sat
terfield, Pyron & Cos.
JBsay We see several panels of a port
able plank fence, put up by a gentle
man in this place, standing in front of
Mr. Manley’s shop. It is certainly of
great practical utility in this day and
time, wh en timber and labor is so
scarce.
Save money by buying your Diy
Goods, Clothing, Hats, Boots, Shoes,

Geo. W. Jack, Atlanta.
The flaming advertisement of the a
bove gentleman may be found else
where hi the columns of this pap* r, to
which we invite the attention of the
reader. Mr. Jack is an excellent busi
ness man, and is and ting a tremendous
wholesale ami retail business in his
line; and, in a few years move, will a
mass a handsome fortune, if he lives.
He stands square up to his business,
and so does all his clerks. If you want
to know how clock-work business is
performed, just staud in his store
room aud take observation. He leads
and all his employees follow. Atten
tion is his watchword.
ts-if* See the advertisement of that
model gentleman and excellent Clock
and Watch Repairer, W. C. Green, in
which he proposed to do work on ve
ry reasonable terms. We have no
hesitancy, whatever, in asserting that
as a workman, he has no superiors.—
He ’is also agent for tlie sale of the
celebrated “Sun Oil,” which cannot be
exceled as a burning fluid, warranted
to be non-explosive. Call on him at
Liebmaq’s store, and give him a trial,
and we will guarantee perfect satisfac

with the above title will be delivered
at DeGive's Opera House next Friday
evening, (Feb. 25th.) Wo congratu
late our renders, that this most inter
esting lecture, by perhaps one of the
most successful writers for the people
in the South, is to be offered to an At
lanta audience.
It is for the benefit of the A oung
Men’s Library Association. Every
friend of the Associations should at
tend. Reserved seats can be secured
at tho box of office from 9 to 5 o’clock
without extra charge. We hope there
will boa full attendance, as the object
is a good one, and we doubt not the
lecture will be amply remunerative to
those who may attend it.—At. Intel.
The above lecturer, we learn, will
visit and lecture, in this place, if our
citizens desire him to do so.
The Inteliigeneer estimates that S4G
-500 will feed Atlanta for a week.
A. M. Linn’s fine Stallion

this day.

The symptoms of bad blood are usually quite pla'n

This condition soon shows itself in rouyhness of the

Much, very much suffering is caused by impure blood.
It is estimated by" some that one-fifth of the human

When the Blood Is pure, you are not so liable to any
