The Montgomery Mail says that Hardy, of who Judge 13u steed has appointed receiver of the Selma & Meridian Road, vice Col, Sam Title re moved, is ‘universally known to be the most dishonest man in Alabama.’ A nice sort of a scoundrel, truly, to han dle the funds of one of the most im portant roads in the South. Col. Den mead, of the South and North Railroad, has returned to Deca tur from Montgomery, with ample funds to pay the hands that were em ployed in building the 20 miles South of that place. He will commence pay iug off the Ist of May. From 150 to 200 hands are now at work, and it is contemplated to put on a large force, and continue extending the road south from its present terminus. A train luns twent 3 t miles out from Decatur aud back twice a week. The Ticket Agents Convention agreed to make a discount of 33$ per ceut to colonies numbering 100 per sons or more. Our young friend Grady, of the Rome Courier, we observe, has offered a premium of a $5 gold piece for the heaviest boy baby under two years of age, to be exhibited at the next Rome Fair. Hon. John A. Cobb, eldest son of the late Howell Cobb, owns and man ages 14,000 acres of rich land, in one bod}’, about fourteen miles from Amer icus, Ga. Jim Fisk gave a big dinner to the Convention of Ti.ket Agents, who were in session at the Fifth Avenue Hotel, New T York, on the 31st of March. The Supreme Court of Appeals, of Virginia has decided that Henry K. Ellison, and not George Cahoon, is the lawful Mayor of Richmond, Va., aud that all acts of Mr. Ellison in accord ance with the State laws are legal and binding. General Assembly of the Presbyte rian Church of the United States.— This body will meet in the Second Presbyterian Church in the city of Louisville, Kentucky, on the third Tuesday, (19th day) of May. The opening sermon will be preached by the Rev. Stuart Robinson, the Mode rator of the last Assembly. Dried Blackberries. We are hr formed that a gentleman of this city has orders to ship dried blackberries in large quantities to California, dur ing the approaching season. In North Carolina this branch of busi ness is a profitable one, and might be made so here. Small niggers aud loafers will do well to pick and dry in quantities, as ready sale, at fair pri ces, will be found for all brought in.— fColumbus En. Dr. J. H. DeVotie, for twelve years pastor of the First Baptist Church, of Columbus, has resigued. A Cincinnati Druggist declares that there are no less than a thousand arsenic eaters in that city, and imme diate vicinity, mostly young women, who take the poison for complexion. A mammoth planing mill and ma chine shop is soon to be erected at Jacksonville. A Country of Equal Rights ! —lt is escimated that the number of persons still disfranchised under the Fourteenth Amendment from all State and Feder al offices amounts to 250,000. The Courier-Journal says a short time since a company with a cap ital of three millions of dollars, was organized in Chicago for the purpose of insuring husbands and wives against elopement. In six weeks the losses of the company had swallowed up every dollar of its capital and all the money it could borrow or steal. That sort of a thing won’t pay in Chicago. We have received from the National Publishing House, at Atlanta, the ad vance sheets of Mr. Beadle’s new work on Utah and the Mormons.— From a perusal of them we feel satis fied that the work is both interesting and instructive. Agents wanted in every county, as the book is to be sold by subscription only. The 48th annual convention of the Prostant Episcopal Church of the Di ocese of Georgia is to be held in Suiut Paul’s Church, Albany, on the 4th of May. Delegates will pay railway fare going to the convention and return free. It is the determination of President White, says the Mason Journal, to have the cars running on the Savan nah, Griffin and North Alabama rail road, from Griffin to Newnan, by the Ist day of July. The State of New Mexico, is about to be admitted as one of the United States; which will make 38. Liberia is thinking seriously of an nexing the United States; provided the latter pay hansom ely for the privilege. GEORGIA RAILROAD. We learn that the Georgia Railroad will shortly have one hundred and fifty new freight ears, and four new loco motives, placed on the road, in order to meet the requirements of business. The freight cars are now being built. The showing for the present fiscal year discloses the earnings of the road for the past year to be $250,000 over last year, and 350,000 over that of 1808. S. K. Johnson, superintendent, is alive railroad man, and possesses all the qualifications necessary to make him efficient and untiring in the discharge of his duties. Judge John P. King, the President, is truly a railroad king. Under his management the road has weathered every storm, and anchored in a harbor of security. Long may he live to preside over the interests of this great corporation, and add to its wealth and prosperity. Few roads can make a better showing than will be made by fc>. K.
