It is easier to farm well than iU. The man who makes two blades of grass grow where one only grew be fore, and makes every other kind of produce double too is a happier naan than the one who plods on doing nei ther better nor worse than the aver age; while the miserable mortal who impoverishes bis land must feel how degraded a position he stands in, and his mind must sink lower and lower with his property. If a report of eve ry farm through every parish in the Union was made once in seven years, and the improvement, the impoverish ment, or the non-improvement of each was published, it would give the coun try at large a better idea of what is going ou in agriculture. It is of no uso denying facts, and the truth is starting from the east the land is robbed of more than half its fertility, and still as population moves on ho dot-s the exhausting system. If when a parish, a county or a State is half impoveiished a stop can bo put to the debilitating progress, why not stop at the beginning? Why not re imburse from the start? Land is sel dom too rich, and when it is what i s said to be "in the very highest state of fertility," what a pity to bring it down! Yet this is the custom, the fashion, and the example set by all. This kind of policy carried into other lines of business, would cause men to say fVie guilty parties were insauo or fools. Lard cannot throw up im mu'K crops in water and air; there fort»if tlu>< crops are sold off, the land is ; bat jnuch poorer, but science and even common experience proves there are stages at whit li some of the productions of the earth can be taken away when nothing bus been done to cause injury, and if at this period of the crop’s growth it 1.4 turned into manure, the land is benotitted without any foreign aid. Thus by having in tervening crops of this kind there may be things sold 0110 year which will bo replaced the next by this renovation. This is why the four-course system, or some other suitable rotation, is insist ed upon in England. Poor land is brought to bo rich, and good land is kept up on the best estates; yet thero are anuually great quantities of fat cattle and sheep sold from these farms, and wool, cheese, butter, &c. continue to be produced because there is an art in doing this so as to improve and in crease the stamina of the soil.—Coun try Gentleman. CHARCOAL AS A GENERAL REMEDY. Our rule bus always been to give nothing, uuless we know exactly what to do; and in the meantime attend to every exterior comfort practicable. If the weather is cold, place it in warm quarters, avoid all exposure, and at tend to pure air and strict cleanliness. But there is one medicine that can never do harm, and is commonly beu eficiul; this is, pulverized charcoal. As we have just remarked, nearly all sick animals become so from improper eat ing, in the lirst place. Nino cases out of ten, the digestion is wrong. Char coal is the most efficient and rapid corrective. It will cure in a majority of cases, if properly administered. An example of its use—the hired man came in with intelligence that one of the finest cows was very sick, and a kind neighbor proposed the usual drugs and poisons. The owner being ill and unable to examine the cow, concluded that the trouble came from some over-eating, and ordered a tea cup of pulverized charcoal given in water. It was mixed, placed in a Juuk bottle, the head held upward, and the water with its charcoal pour ed downward. Iu live minutes an im- Erovement was visible, and in a few ours the animal was in the pasture quietly eatiDg grass. Another in stance of equal success occurred with a young heifer which becarno badly bloated by eating green apples after a hard wind. The bloat was so severe that the sides were almost as hard as a barrel. The old remedy, saleratus, was tried for the purpose of correcting the acidity. But the attempt to put it down always caused coughing, and it did little good. Half a teacupful of fresh powdered charcoal was next giv en. In six hours all nppearance of bloat bad gone, and the heifer was well. —Country Gentlemen. PLANT AN ORCUAUD. No matter whether your farm is small or large; dont rest content until you have an orchard of fruit-trees. <» We do not advise farmers indiscrim inately,” says the Countryman, “to undertake to raise fruit for market. Euch ono should judge for himself as to the feasibility of such an enterprise. But we do say to every farmer, raise hint,or try to do so, at least for the u tof your own family. It will large ly pay in pleasure and in health, if you never sell a dollar’s worth. Iu selecting varieties, choose those kinds that usually do well in your locality. Beal, if possible, with reliable fruit-tree dealers, rather than with agents who are strangers to you. And don’t set out an orchard under the delusion that setting out the trees will be about ell the work that will be necessary. -*■o this day of many enemies to fruit and fruit-trees, it may be said that eternal vigilance is the price of fruit. Land devoted to fruit-trees need not be worthless to the owner. Some valuable crops can be raised in the or chard almost until the tree* booomc old enough to bear; ,md by the time they reach bearing age, in this case, there will probably be a market close enough. But, as we said above, if you Dover sell a dollar’s worth of fruit, your orchard assuredly will, if proper ly attended to, pay you and yonr fair uy, m health and comfort, for all v c ,m labor and expense.” 4 Ayer’s | Cherry Pectoral, For Diseases of the Throat and T..i* ri such as Couchs, Colds, Whooping Cough, Bronchitis, A nth m and Consumption. discoveries of modern j/ science, few are of dBIfA more value to mankind than this es -1 I factual remedy for all ; I W diseases of the Throat v 3Q T and Longs. A vast ; I /HR I trial of its virtues, lAlmkl throughout this and ! jmyßl other countries, has shown that it does surely and effectually j control them. The testimony'of our best citi | zeus, of all classes, establishes the fact, that 1 Chekrt. Pectoral will and does relieve and ! cure the afflicting disorders of the Throat and i Lung, beyond any other medicine. The most ' dangerous affections of the Pulmonary Organs : yield to its power; and cases of I'ou.sunip. | lion, cured by this preparation, are public ly known, so remarkable as hardly to oe be lieved, were they not proven beyond dispute. A. a remedy it is adequate, on which the public may rely for full protection. By curing Coughs, the lorerunners of more serious disease, it saves unnumbered lives, and an amount of suffering not to be computed. It challenges trial, and con vinces the most sceptical. Every- familv should keep it on hand as a protection against the early and unperceived attack of Pulmonary Affections, which are easily met at first, but which become incurable, and too often fatal, if neglected. Ten der lungs need this defence; and it is unwise to be without it. Asa safeguard to children, amid the dbtre-sing di-eases which beset the Throat and Chest of childhood, Cherry Pectoral Is invaluable; for, by its timely use, multi tudes are rescued from premature graves, and saved to the love and affection centred on them. It acts speedily and surely against ordinary colds, securing sound and health-restoring sleep. No one will suffer troublesome Influenza and pain- ful Bronchitis, when they know how easily they can be cured. Originally the product of long, laborious, and successful chemical investigation, no cost or toil is spared in making every bottle in the utmost possible perfection. It may be confidently re lied upon as possessing all the virtues it ha* ever exhibited, and capable of producing cures a* memorable as the greatest it has ever effected. PREPARED by Dr. J. C. AYER & CO., Lowell, Mass., Practical and Analytical Chemists. SOLD BY ALL DRUGGISTS EVERYWHERE. Ayer’s Ague Cure, Fop Fever and Ague, Intermittent Fever, Chill Fever, Remittent Fever, Dumb Ague, Periodical or Bilious Fever, &c., and indeed all tho affections which arise from malarious, marsh, or miasmatic poisons. No one remedy is louder H| B fulled for by the necessities of • the American people than a sure and safe cure for Fever flfl I and Ague. Such we are now JB- enabled to offer, with a perfect M certainty that it will eradicate “ the disease, and with assur ance, founded on proof, that no harm can ariso from its use in any quantity. That which protects from or prevents this dis order must be of immense service in the com munities where it prevails. Prevention is better than cure, for the patient escapes the risk which he must run in violent attacks of this baleful dis temper. This “CORE” expels the miasmatic poison of Fever and Ague from the system, and prevents the development of the disease, if taken on the first approach of its premonitory symptoms. It is not only the best remedy ever yet discovered for this class of complaints, but also the cheapest. The large quantity we sup ply for a dollar brings it within the reach of everybody; and in bilious districts, where Fever and Ague prevails, everybody should have it, and use it freely, both for cure and pro tection. It is hoped this price will place it within the reach of all the poor as well as the rich. A great superiority or this remedy over any other ever discovered for the speedy and certain cure of Intcrmittents is, that it contains no Qui nine or mineral; consequently it produces no quinism or other injurious effects whatever upon the constitution. Thoso cured by it arc left as healthy as if they had never had the disease. Fever and Agile is not alone the consequence of the miasmatic poison. A great variety of dis orders arise from its irritation, among which are Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Gout, Headache, Blindness, Toothache, Earache, Catarrh, Asth ma, Palpitation, Painful Affection of the Spleen, Hysterics, Pain in the Bowels, Colic, Paralysis, arid derangement of the Stomach, all of which, when originating in this cause, put on the in termittent type, or become periodical. This “Cube” expels tho poison from the blood, and consequently cures them all alike. It is an in valuuble protection to immigrants and persons travelling or temporarily residing in the mala rious districts. If taken occasionally or daily while (exposed to tho infection, that, will be ex creted from the system, and cannot accumulate in sufficient quantity to ripen into disease. Hence it is even more valuable for protection than cure; and few will ever suffer from Inter mittents if they avail themselves of the protec tion this remedy affords. For Liver Complaints, arising from torpid ity of the Liver, it is an excellent remedy, stim ulating tho Liver into healthy activity, and pro ducing many truly remarkable cures, where other medicines fail.
