WIT AND HUMO S.
PERKINS HAS THK TOOTHACHE.
When I weDt to bed thnt night I
apprehended trouble. Along one jaw,
the left one, occasionally capered a
grumbling seHsntion. It kept me
awake an hour or bo trying to deter
mine whether that was all there was
of it or whether there was something
to come after that which would need my
wakeful presence to contend against
Thus pondering, I fell asleep, and for
got all about the trouble. I don't
know how long I slept, but I fell to
dreaming I had made a match for lpsß
a side to fight a cross-cut saw in a
steam mill, and was well to work on
the job when the saw got my head bo
twi-en its teeth. I thought this was a
favorable time to wako up, and I did
so. It immediately transpired that I
might better have stayed where I
was and take the chances with the
saw.
1 found myself sitting straight up
in bed, with one hand spasmodically
grasping my jaw, and the other sway
ing to and fro without any apparent
cause.
It was an awful pain. It bored like
lightning through the basement of my
jaw, darted across the roof of my
mouth and ran lengthwise of my teeth.
If everything had been a drunken
plow, located by a demon across the
stump lot, I think the observer would
understand my condition. I could no
more get hold of the tearful agony
that was cavorting arouud in mo than
I could pick up a great hurry.
Suddenly it stopped. It went giv
ing me a parting kick that fairly made
xne howl.
I thought I was rid of the toothache,
but a grumbling set in the next morn
ing. It was just liko tho feeling of the
night before; and a still voice said to
me, " Look out, Perkins.’
I did. I went right away to tho
deutist who has pulled the teeth of
our family and kuew our peculiari
ties.
There was an uneasy smell about
hia offico, it was very suggestive of
trouble, and as I snuffed it in I expe
rienced a sinking feeling in the pit of
my stomach. I looked at him and
sickly smiled. He was never, even
on holidays, the handsomest of men;
hut now his appearance was very de
pressing. He looked like a corpso
with a lighted candle inside of it.
I told him what tho matter was
with me; how that I had been up all
night with a four story pain; how my
wife had been thrown out of the bed
by tho violence of my suffering;
how—
Ho asked me if I wouldu t sit down.
I sat on what was onco a hogshead,
but now cut down and newly carpet
ed. Ho held back my head, opened
my mouth, and went to fishing
around inside with a piece of watch
spring.
And while ho angled he conversed.
Said he:
“ You have caught a terrible hard
cold.’*
“ I have ?”
'• It seems tho trouble is with one of
tho biscupids.”
Os course I didn’t know what a bis-
on] lid was, but I thought it wouldn’t
look well in the head of tho family bo
iug stuck with so short a word as that;
so I asked with some vigor:
“ Which one?”
“ Tho tumerous one," said he.
“ I am glad it ain’t any worse,” I re
plied with a sigh of relief.
" The frontal bone is not seriously
affected; the snbmaxilary gland is
somewhat eularged, but it does not
necessarily follow that parotitus will
ensue.”
“ I am proud to hear that,” said I—
which I certainly was, although if the
parotitus has ensued, it is not at all
likely that I should have minded it
much unless it was something that
would spoil, as I was dressed up in
my best.
Ho kept on talking aud angling.
“ The (esophagus ain’t loose,” ho re
marked.
“ Ah 1” said I, winking at him.
" Oh, no, the ligaments are quite
firm. I might say—”
“ Did it hurt you ?” ho asked as cool
and calm as the lid of an ice cream
freezer.
“ Hurt me! Great Heavens! Did
you expect to split me open with a
Watch spring and not hnrt me ?
What was the matter? Did von
•lip?”
"Certainly not!” he said; I was
just getting hold of the tooth. Just
hold your head back an instant, and I
will have it out at once.”
“ I guess I won’t try it ngain,” said
I with a shiver. “ The toothache is
enough, but it is heaven alongside of
that watch spring. You may come
np sometime aud pull it out wheu I
ain’t at home. I think I could endure
the operation if I was off about eigh
teen blocks. Como up wheu you
can.”
A Fiench authoress says: “A kiss
gives more pleasure than anything else
in the world.” To this an editor re
sponds: "That writer never experienc
ed the childish rapture of descending
the stairs by sliding down the banis
ters.”
A man in Bangor, Maine, handed in
a dispatch to a telegraphic operator
to be sent off at once. This was done
and the written missive placed on a
hook. The man, evidently deeply dis
gusted, waited some time, and at last,
his patience being exhausted, belched
out: " Ain’t you going to send that
despatch V” ‘Tho operator politely in
formed him that he had sent it. No
yer ain’t,” replied the indignant ho
mo, “ there it is now on the hook.”
A pious but uneducated judge closed
a sentence with the following touch
ing reproach: "Prisoner at she bar,
nature has endowed you with a jjood
education and respectable family con
nections, instead of which you gv,
prowling around the country stealing
ducks.”
Why is U the gayest letter in the
alphabet?—Beoause it is always in
fun.
Ayer’s
Hair Vigor,
For restoring to Gray Hair its
natural Vitality and Color.
to its original
' 3?*— color, with the
gloss and freshness of youth. Thin
■iair is thickened, falling hair checked,
and baldness often, though not always,
cared by its use. Nothing can restoro
tho bait where tho follicles are de
stroyed, or tho glands atrophied and
decayed; but such as remain can be
waved by this application, and stimu
la'ed into activity, so that anew
growth ofjiair is producod. Instead
of fouling the hair vcitlf a pasty sedi
ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous.
Its occasional use will prevent the hair
from turning gray or falling off, and
consequently prevent baldness. The
re ! oration of vitality it gives to tho
B'alp arrests and prevents the forma
tion of dandruff, which is often so un
cleanly and offensive. Free from those
deleterious substances which make
some preparations dangerous and inju
rious to the hair, the Vigor can only
benefit but not harm it. If wanted
merely for a HAIR DRESSING,
nothing else can bo found so desirable.
Containing neither oil nor dye, it does
not soil white cambric, and yet lasts
long on the hair, giving it a rich, glossy
lustro, and a grateful perfume.

yet discovered for tills class of complaints, blit

everybody; and in bilious districts, where
KF.vrit and Atirt; prevails, everybody should
hare it, and uso it freely, both for cure and pro

A groat superiority of this remedy over any

quinism or other injurious effect* whatever upon
tlia constitution. Thoso cured by it are left as
healthy as if they had never had the disease.
Fever and Ague is not alone tho consequence
of the miasmatic poison. A great variety of dis

are Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Gout, Headache,
Blindness, Toothache, Unrncho, Catarrh, Astir

Hysterics, Pain in tho Bowels, Colic, Paralysis,
and derangement of tiro Stomach, nil of which,
when originating in (his cause, put on the in

“Cube” expels the poison from the blood, and
consequently cures thorn all alike. It is an in
valuable protection to immigrants and persons
travelling or temporarily residing in tbc mala
rious districts. If taken occasionally or daily
while exposed to the infection, that will be ex
eretod from the system, and cannot accumulate
in sufficient quantity to ripen into disease.
Honco it is even more valuable for protection
than cure; and few will over suffer from Inter
mittents it they avail themselves of tho protec
tion this remedy afford*.
For Liver Complaints , arising from torpid
ity of the Livor, it is an excellent remedy, stim
ulating tho Liver into healthy activity, and pro
