kind, and developed taster and habits
of the strangest and most abnormal
character.
Once, at a very tender age he was
missing for several days, and finally
turned up fast asleep upon a tomb
stone in the villlage gravO-yar<l.
Fond of solitude, he ever lived in
the thick redhHHJB and tangled forests
of that semi-tropical dime. A pas

hitherto utterly unknown to residents
of the country.' Ho has been known
to w ■ >l, stsl follow up day after day,
without ceasing, ft paroquet or some
other .-.‘range bird until no hit's secur

md robbery on the roost, were the
means employed by him in capturing
jiis feathered treasures. And never
were they known to fail.
This protracted life in the woods
and close association with beasts and
birds, grtldually transformed Ibis
won* lerfu I creat are into aregular satyr
or wild man, ;uid, tiange to say,
liis very jiliysieal appearance under
went a change, and his natural tastes
and appetites also. The writer has
seen him with a pocket full of live
gra- -hoppers, which lie would eat
like sugar plums or bonbons. Liz
zards, locusts, and v\cn serpents, were
dispatched in the same way. Indeed,
among his other silvan pursuits, the
c .pture of snakes was a favorite pas
time. Armed wit h a forked stick on
ly, we have seen this man crawl on
all fours through a ditch forty feet
wide, hik'd with ooze ami slime, in
quest of the deadly moccasin. When
encountered, after pinning the rep
tile’s head to the earth, he would
seir.e it by the neck, and inserting a
cyarse cloth into its mouth so as to
cover the fangs, forcibly extract them
with a sharp jerk. They were then
carefully placed in his bosom for shel
ter and safe keeping. We have seen
him stand with the heads and forked
tongues of several huge serpents thus
bestowed darting about Ids check and
fire, with a broad grin upon his semi
barbarous countenance.
But this was not all; our carnivor
ous biped would devour these writh
ing monsters. wi(.h horrible gusto,
a/hr, and squirming as he tore the
ilesli with his teeth —scores of living
witnesses will attest this fact. He
was even tempted to make this dia
bolical taste a matter of profit, and
actually advertised to eat living ser
pent- in Ihe cities of Charleston and
Savannah, in the latter of which he
wa- arrested for the brutality of the
performance.
The dwelling of this man monster
was visited by every stronger and iui
tiquary who made a pilgrimage to
.SuubuTy, to view the old fort, and
the enchanting water scenery of the
dilapidated town. It presented a
unique appearance I rung around the
walls were tho cages of a multitude of

a long chest upon the floor contained
his collection of serpents. On one oc
casion the writer, anxious to get a
peep at the hideous reptiles within,
pan. !!;• removed tho lid, but quick
as thought out glided a huge thunder
snake and he fled incontinently.
Twi-teU together in huge rolls, these
nauseous creatures, embracing rattle
snakes, moccasins, vipers, black

blue snake, and many other Varieties,
existed, without food for long months,

the etjyx of the several females.

wrote quite respectable doggerel and
his doting mother proclaimed him to
be, not quite the equal of Byron hut

Ayer’s
Sarsaparilla
A aspne of the most
utation, based on its
intrinsic virtues, and sustained by its re
markable cures. So mild as to be safe and
beneficial to children, and yet so searching
as to effectually purge out the great cor
ruptions of the blood, such as the scrofulous
and syphilitic contamination. Impurities,
or diseases that have lurked in the system
for years, soon yield to this powerful anti
dote, and disappear. Hence its wonderfnl
cures, many of which are publicly known,
of Scrofula, and all scrofulous diseases,
Ulcers, Eruptions, and eruptive dis
orders of the skin, Tumors, Blotches
Boils, Pimples, Pustules, Sor<is,St.
Anthony’s Fire, Bose or Erysipe
las, Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald
Head, Ringworm, and internal Ul
cerations of the Uterus, Stomach,
and Fiver. It also cures other com
plaints, to which it would not seem especi
ally adapted, such as Dropsy, Dysjicp
sia, Fits, Neuralgia, Heart Disease,
Female Weakness, Debility, and
licueorrhuia, when they are manifesta
tions of the scrofulous poisons.
It is an excellent restorer of health and
strength in the Spring. By renewing the
appetite and vigor of the digestive organs,
it dissipates the depression and listless lan
guor of the season. Even where no disorder
appears, people feel better, and live longer,
for cleansing the blood. The system moves
on with renewed vigor and anew lease of
life.

Cherry Pectoral,
For Diseases of tho Throat and Lunas,
' such as Coughs, Colds, Whooping
Cough, Bronchitis, Asthma,
and Consumption.
r discoveries of modem
science, few are of
more real value to
mankind than this ef
fectual remedy for all
diseases of the Throat
trial of its virtues,
throughout this and
other countries, lias
shown that it does
surely and effectually
control them. The testimony of our best citi
zens, of all classes, establishes the fact, that
Cherry Pectoral will and does relieve and
euro the afflicting disorders of the Throat and
Lungs beyond any other medicine. The most
dangerous affections of the Pulmonary Organs
yield to its power; and cases of Consump
tion, cured by this preparation, are public
ly known, so remarkable as hardly to be be
lieved, were they not proven beyond dispute.
Asa remedy it is adequate, on which the public
may rely for full protection. By curing Coughs,
the forerunners of more serious disease, it saves
unnumbered lives, and an amount of suffering
not to be computed. It challenges trial, and con
vinces the most sceptical. Every family should
keep it on hand ns a protection against the early
nnd unperceived attack of Pulmonary Affections,
which are easily met at first, but which become
incurable, and too often fatal, if neglected. Ten
der lungs need this defence; and it is unwise to
be without it. Asa safeguard to children, amid
the distressing diseases which beset tho Throat
nnd Chest of childhood, Cherry Pectoral
Is invaluable; for, by its timely use, multi
tudes are rescued from premature graves, and
saved to the love and uffection centred on them.
It acts speedily and surely against ordinary colds,
securing sound and health-restoring sleep. No
one will suffer troublesome Influenza and pain
ful Bronchitis, when they know how easily
they can bo cured.
Originally tho product of long, laborious, and
successful chemical investigation, no cost or toil
is spared in making every bottle in the utmost
possible perfection. It may bo confidently re
lied upon as possessing all the virtues it has ever
exhibited, and capable of producing cures a*
memorable as the greatest it lias ever effected.
