No more amusing anecdote is told
of Artemus Ward than the follow
ing :
One day while traveling in the
cars and feeling miserably, and dread
ing to bo bored by strangers, a man
took a. seat beside him and presently
said:
“ Did you hear the last tiling on
Horace Orecley?”
“ Greeley ? Oreeley ?” said Arte
mu-. “Horace Greeley? Who is
lie?”
The man was quiet about five min
utes. Pretty soon he said :
“ George Francis Train is kicking
upn good deal of a row over ini
England. Do you think they will !
put him in a Bastile?”
“Train? Train?—George Francis
Train?’ said Artemus,solemnly. “ I |
never heard ofliim.”
This ignorance kept the man quiet j
for fifteen minutes ; then he said:
“ What do you think about Gener
al Grant’s chances for #the Presiden
cy? Do you think they will run
him ?”
“ Grant? Grant? Hang it man,”
said Artemus, “you appear to know
more strangers than anv man I ever
saw.”
The man was furious; he walked
up the car, but at last came back and
said:
“ You confounded ignoramus, did
you ever hear of Adam?”
Artemus looked up and said !
“ What was his other name?”

Cherry Pectoral,
For Disease* of the Throat and Lungs,
such as Coughs, Cold*, Whooping
Cough, Bronchitis. Asthma,
and Consumption.
r Among the great
discoveries of modern
science, few are of
more real value to
mankind than this ef
fectual remedy for all
diseases of the Throat
and Lungs. A vast
trial of its
throughout tii is and
other countries, has
shown that it does
surely and effectually
control them. The testimony'of oqr best citi
zens, of all classes, establishes the fact, that
Cheery Pectoral will and does relieve and
cure the afflicting disorders of the Throat and
Lung* beyond any other medicine. The most
dangerous affections of the Pulmonary Organs
yield to its power; and cases of Consomp.
bon, cured iy ti. * preparation, are public
ly known, so refflhrkaole* as h&niiy to be be
lieved, were they not proven beyond dispute.
Asa remedy it is’ adequate, on which tlie public
may rely for full protection. By curing Coughs,
the’ forerunners of more serious disease, it saves
unnumbered lives, and an amount of suffering
not to be computed. It challenges trial, and con
vinces the most sceptical. Every familv should
keep it on hand a* a protection against the early
and unperceived attack of Pulmonary Affections,
which are easily met at first, but which become
incurable, and too often fatal, if neglected. Ten
der lungs need this defence; and it is unwise to
be without it. Asa safeguard to children, amid
the distressing diseases which beset the Throat
and Chest of childhood. Cherry Pectoral
is invaluable; for, by its timely use, multi
tudes are rescued from premature graves, and
saved to the love and affection centred on them.
It acts speedily and surelv against ordinary colds,
securing sound and health-restoring sleep. No
one will suffer troublesome Influenza and pain
ful Bronchitis, when they know how easily
they can be cured.
Originally the product of long, laborious, and
successful chemical investigation, no cost or toil
is spsired in making every bottle in the utmost
possible perfection. It may be confidently re
lied upon as possessing all the virtues it has ever
exhibited, and capable of producing cures as
memorable as the greatest it nas ever effected.

Ayer’s Ague Cure,
For Fever and Ague, Intermittent Fever,
Chill Fever, Remittent Fever, Dumb
Ague, Periodical or Bilious Fever, &c.,
and indeed all tho affections which arise
from malarious, marsh, or miasmatio
poisons.
No one remedj’ is louder

m tlie American people than a
and safe cure for Fever
J ■■ I Ague, such we are now
-J*-- cmihled to offer, with a perfect
M • orbuntj that it will eradicate
“ the disease, and with assur
ance, fonndt'A •>:> proof, that no harm can ariso
from its use in any quantity.
That which protects from or prevents this dis
order must be of immense service in the com
munities where it prevails. Prevention is better
than cure, for the patient escapes the risk which
he must run in violent attacks of this baleful dis
temper. This “Cure” expels the miasmatic
poison of Fever and Ague from the system,
and prevents the development of the disease, if
taken on the first approach of its premonitory
symptoms. It is not only the best remedy ever
yet discovered for this class of complaints, but
also tho cheapest. The large quantity we sup
ply for a dollar brings it within the reach of
everybody; and in bilious districts, where
Fever and Ague prevails, everybody should
have it, and use it freely, both for < ure and pro
tection. It is hoped this’priec will place it within
the reach of all—the poor as well as the rich.
A great superiority of this remedy over any
other ever discovered for the speedy and certain
cure of lntermittents is, that it contains no Qui
nine or mineral; consequently it produces no
auinism or other injurious effects whatever upon
le constitution. Those cured by it are left as
healthy as if they had never had the disease.
Fever and Ague is not alone the consequenco
of the miasmatic poison. A great variety of dis
orders arise from its irritation, among which
arc Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Gout, Headache,
Blindness, Toothache, Earache, Catarrh, Asth
ma, Palpitation, Painful Affection of the Spleen,
Hysterics, Pain in the Bowels, Colic, Paralysis,
and derangement of the Stomach, all of which,
when originating in this cause, put on the in
termittent type, or become periodical. This
“Cum:” expels the poison from the blood, and
consequently cures them all alike. It is an in
valuable protection to immigrants and persons
travelling or temporarily residing in the mala
rious districts. If taken occasionally or daily
while exposed to the infection, that will be ex
creted from the system, and cannot accumulate
in sufficient quantity to ripen into disease.
Hence it is even more valuable for protection
than cure; and few will ever suffer from Inter
mittenls if they avail themselves of the protec
tion this remedy affords.
For Liver Complaints, arising from torpid
ity of the Liver, it is an excellent remedy, stim
ulating the Liver into healthy activity, and pro
ducing many truly remarkable cures, where
other medicines fail.
