STANDARD AND EXPRESS. CARTERSVILLF., G.\„ MAY 9, 1872 SUBSCRIPTION : TWO DOLLARS A YEAR, IN' ADVANCE WIT AM) HUMOR. If Adam is accountable for“ conse quential damages,” be will have a rough time of it. A junior of Yak* returned a book to the library the other day, with a hair tun in it as a book mark. Let us hope for the best. A “shoemaker” writes that he is not only willing to give women her rights but her “ rights and lefts.” This is his last joke. A grocer recently had a pound of sugar returned with a note that it con tained too much sand for table use and not enough for building purposes. “You’ll grow up ugly if you make faces,” said a maiden to her little nieee, who replied by asking —" Did vou make faces when you was a girl aunty?” it is a curious fact that though the rain keeps thousands away from church on Sundays it does not deter a single man from attending to his busi ness on week-days. The following knotty question claims the attention of debating socie ties: “Hainan has a tiger by the tail, which would be the best for his per -onal safety to hold on or let go?” An irreverent young woman, on being questioned as to her opinion of a fresh male acquaintance, wild he would be very presentable if the Lord han’t turned up so much of bis to make feet of. An excellent mother, in writing to one of her sons on the birth ofhiseld est child, says: “Give him an educa tion, that bis life may be useful: teach him religion, that bis death UjK'.v b«* happy. A few Sundays since a teacher in the Sunday-school of an Episcopal church in Chicago, said to one of her pupils: “ James, what good thing— what great pleasure are you willing to give up as a sacrifice during the Lent season?” Jimmie meditated about ten seconds and responded: “ I think I’ll give up going to Sunday-school,” In Hart county recently, M. W. Roberts, a gay boy of ninety-two sum mers, married Miss Martha Davis, a blushing girl of forty. The parents of young Roberts were stoutly opposed to the match, but in consideration of the fact that lie bad just safely cut his third set of teeth, they at last con sented. Said a minister once, when I gently hinted to him that heliad not preach ed the Gospel that morning: “No,” said he, “1 did not mean to preach to sinners in the morning, but I will preach to them in the evening.” “ Ah,” said I, “ but what if some of your congregation of the morning should be in hell before evening.— Spurgeon. A Boston man has published an ar ticle, in which he shows how any body can reduce the cost of living to ten cents a day. A perfectly sure method is never to spend more than ten cents. Another way is to borrow all the money you need over and above ten cents. Another plan is to go around and live with your father in-law ; and another is to steal all you want ;jand still another is to play the old-fashioned system of taking dried apples for breakfast, water for dinner, and let them swell for'supper. The Washington Star thus describes a “ Dolly Varden :” A “ Dolly Var den” is a moire antique dress pattern, and it is made of some material, and is cut biased at the top and bottom, and trimmed with Honiton polonais es pud tube roses, with apeplum run ning two chains and three links to the southwest from the starting point, around the skirts of civilization, and pinned together with a self-acting safety-pin. The figures are so large that it takes eight dress patterns to show them off to advantage. A Railroad Whistle.— None but locomotive engineers are permit ted perusal of this: When I was teaching in Semi nary I boarded with an old lady who had an opinion on every subject and expressed it. One night the train ran off the track near by, and in con sequence there was a deal of whist ling. Next morning the old lady in quired if we had heard the disturb ance. “ No; my wife thought something was the matter, but l heard noth ing.” “ Well,” said she, “I dare presume there has been an accident, for the cars have been whistling ’ftiost all night. They whistled, 1 dare pre sume, a half an hour at a time. I didn’t think it possible fora man to hold his breath so long?” “ Why, mother,” interrupted her daughter, “it’s a steam whistle. “ La !” said the old lady, “ I always thought it was the engineer that whistled!” A Dutchman, complaining of bad neighbors, says his pigs and his hens come home with their ears split, and that the last time two of the hens came home missing. A negro who was suspected of sur reptiously meddling with his neigh bor’s fruit, being caught in a garden by moonlight, non-plussed his detec tors by saising his eyes, clasping his hands and piously exclaiming: “Good Lord ! dis darkey can’t go no wheres to pray any more without be ing ’sturbed.” A story is told of a youthful mem ber of the bar at St. Albans, who plunged into a glowing exordum in presenting his case, in which he de clared that “ when we look back upon the untrodden paths of the future, we behold the footprints of an almighty hand.” CHAPTER ON LOYF. Ayers Cherry Pectoral, For Diseases of the Throat and Lungs, such as Coughs, Colds, Whooping Cough, Bronchitis, Asthma, and Consumption. r Among the peat discoveries of modern science, few are of more real value to mankind than this ef fectual remedy for all diseases of the Throat and Langs. A vast trial of its virtues, throughout this and other countries, has shown that it does surely and effectually control them. The testimony 'of our best citi tens, of all classes, establishes the fact, that Cherry Pectoral will and does relieve and cure the afflicting disorders of the Throat and Lungs beyond any other medicine. The most dangerous affections of the Pulmonary Organs yield to its power; and cases of Consump tion, cured by this preparation, are public ly known, so remarkable as hardly to be be lieved, were they not proven beyond dispute. Asa remedy it is adequate, on w.iich the public may rely for full protection. By curing Coughs, the forerunners ot more serious disease, it saves unnumbered lives, and an amount of suffering not to be computed. It challenges trial, and con vinces the most sceptical. Every family should keep it on hand as a protection against the early and uuperceived attack of Pulmonary Affections, which are easily met at first, but which become incurable, and too often fatal, if neglected. Tan der lungs need this defence; and it is unwise to be without it. Asa safeguard to children, amid the distressing diseases which beset the Throat and Chest of childhood, Cherry Pectoral U invaluable; for, by its timely use, rnulti tu lev are rescued from premature graves, and saved to the love and affection centred on them. It acts speedily and surelv against ordinary colds, securing sound and health-restoring sleep. No one will suffer troublesome Influenza and pain ful Bronchitis, when they know how easily thev can be cured. Originally the product of long, laborious, and successful chemical investigation, no cost or toil is spared in making every bottle in the utmost possible perfection. It may be confidently re lied upon as possessing all the virtues it has ever exhibited, and capable of producing cures as memorable as the greatest it has ever effected. PREPARED bt Dr. J. C. That widen protects from or prevents this dis order most be of immense service in the com munities where it prevails. Tills “CURE” expels tire miasmatic poison of Fever and Auric from tin- system, and prevents the development of the disease, if taken on the first approach of its premonitory symptoms. It is not only the best remedy ever yet discovered for this c lass of complaints, but also the cheapest. The large quantity we sup ply for a dollar livings it within the" leach of everybody; and in bilious districts, where Fever and Ar.n: prevails, evtryliody should have it, and use it freely, both for', are and pro tection. It is hoped tliis price will place it within the reach of all the poor as well as the rich. A great superiority ot tliis remedy over any other ever discovered for Ihe speedy ami certain cure of Intermittent? is, that ii contains no Qui nine or mineral; consequently t produces no quinism or other injurious efforts whatever upon tins constitution. Those cured l.v it are left as healthy as if they had never had the disease. Fever and Ague is not alone the consequence of the miasmati" poison. A great variety of dis orders arise from its irritation, among which are Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Gc id. Headache, Blindness, Toothache, Earache, Catarrh, Astir ma, Palpitation, Painful Affection of iho Spleen, Hysterics, Pain in the Bow els, Colic. Paralysis, and derangement of the Stoma 1,, all of which, when originating in this cause, put on ‘.he in termittent type, or become periodical. This “Cure” expels the poison from the blood, and consequently cures them all alike. It is an in valuable protection to immigrants and persons travelling or temporarily residing in the mala rious districts. If taken occasionally or daily while exposed to the infection, that will be ex creted from the system, and cannot accumulate in sufficient quantity to ripen into disease. Hence it is even more valuable for prelection than cure; and few will ever suffer from Inter mittent.? if thev avail themselves of the protec tion this remedy affords.
