The broomstick.
When is a school-boy like a post

and put in a comer to make him
stick to his letters.
A snob once asked an honest labor
ing man what part he performed in
the great drama of life. “ I mind
my own busines and pay my way,”
was the reply.
The Vermont girl who splits a

What kind of rain does a sheep

Clergymen, like brakesmen, do a
good deal of coupling.
What class of women are apt to
give tone to society ? The belles.

An editor says the only reason he
knows of why his house was not

severe gale, was because there was a
heavy mortgage upon it.
Progressive teacher to a pupil of
the period: “ Sary Jane Hooker, just

President of the United States.
“Angelina, my angel, can you tell
me why your eyes are like friends
separated by distant climes?” No,
Augustus, I can’t. Tell me, oh! tell
me why they are thus.” “ Because
they correspond but never meet.”
George Francis Train tells this:
“ There was an old farmer who had
taken the Tribune for thirty years,
rode twenty miles on horseback to
hear Greeley lecture. ‘ What do you
think of him?’ asked a neighbor.
4 Wall. I don’t think much of him as
a speaker, but he would make a d—d

Here are some exliilirating lines
from a seasonable poet: 4 4 December’s
come and now the breezes howl
among the lifeless treeses; now the
boy with ragged trowses shiv’ring
homeward drives the cowses. His
boots are old and torn his clothes is,
and bless my soul, how blue his nose
is.”
“You had better ask for manners
than money,” said a finely dressed
gentleman to a beggar who asked for
alms. “ J asked for what I thought
you had the most of,” was the cut
ting reply.
A RACY EXAMINATION.
The following racy examination of
candidates for admission to the bar
is taken from the Western Law Jour
nal :
Theexamination commenced with:
“ Do you smoke?”
“ 1 do, sir.”
“ Have you a spare cigar?”
“ Yes, sir,” (extends a short six.)
“ Now, sir, what is? the first duty of
a lawyer ?”
“ To collect fees.”
“ Right. What is the second ?”
“ To increase the number of client.”
“ When does the position towards
client change?”
“ When making out a bill of costs.”
“Explain.”
“ We then occupy the antagonistic
position. I become the plaintiff and
he becomes the defendant.”
“ A suit decided, how do you stand
with the lawyer conducting the other
side?”
44 Cheek by jowl.”
“ Enough, sir. You promise to
become an ornamant to your profes
sion, and 1 wish you success. Now,
are you aware of the duty you owe
me ?”
“ Perfectly.”
“ Describe it.”
“ It is to invite you to drink.”
“ But suppose I decline?”
Candidate scratches his head.
“ There is no instance of the kind
on record in the books. I cannot an
swer the question.”
“ You are right. And the confi
dence with which you make the as
sertion shows conclusively that you
read the law attentively. Let’s have
a drink, and 1 will sign your certifi
cate.”
The St. Louis girls were so badly
frightened by the experience of one
of their number, who dislocated the
neck while resisting a kiss, that they
now hold their lips in the softest ana
most comfortable position whenever
they see a man anywhere near.
The contempt felt by border men
for the smaller pattern of fire-arms,
which impart such a sense of securi
to their possessors and then often
leave them in the lurch, is illustrated
by the following:
A party of gentlemen from the
East was traveling through the min
ing districts of Nevada, and one of
them, separated from his companions
a short distance, came upon an old
miner working with a pair of navy
revolvers strapped about his waist.
After a few moment’s conversation,
the latter, who had been curiously
eyeing the homeopathic seven-shoot
er worn by the other, said:
“ Wat ar’ thet ar’ thing, stranger?”
“That? Why, that is a revolver.”
“ Yer wudn’t mind lettin’ me feel
of it, stranger? Thar’s yer party
coinin’ up,” pointing to the remain
ing travelers, who were in sight.
“ Certainly not,” replied the gen
tleman, handing it over.
The old miner turned it in his
hand thoughtfully, remarking in a
low voice, “ Then that ar’ am a re
volver, am it ?” Then in a louder
tone, “Tell ye wat, stranger, es a
man war ever ter shute me wuth
seeh a pop-gun thing as that ar’, and
hear ter find it eout, I’d kick him fer
a sartainty all the way down this

The best thing to give your enemy
is forgiveness; to your opponent tol

your child, a good example; to a fath

self, respect; to all men, charity; to
God, obedience.
An Irishman applying for license
to sell whisky, was asked if he pos

“ Faith yer honor,” replied Pat, “I
don’t see the necessity for a good

A Set-Off fob tiie South.—The
House of Representatives on Thurs
day inserted in the civil appropria

claimants the amounts due them un
der mail contracts existing prior to
May 1,18(56. A proviso that such pay
ment should be made only on proof
of “ loyalty” was stricken out. The
same bill appropriates $3,000,000 to be
expended by the Department of Jus

an abundant set-off for the former

intrinsic virtues, and sustained by its re
markable cures. So mild as to be safe and
beneficial to children, and yet so searching
as to effectually purge out the great cor
ruptions of the blood, such as the scrofulous
and syphilitic contamination. Impurities,
or diseases thdt have lurked in the system
for years, soon yield to this powerful anti
dote, and disappear. Hence its wonderful
cures, many of which are publicly known,
of Scrofula, and all scrofulous diseases,
Ulcers, Eruptions, and eruptive dis
orders of the skin, Tumors, Blotches,
Boils, Pimples, Pustules, Sores, St.
Anthony’s Fire, Rose or Erysipe

Female Weakness, Debility, and
Leucorrlioea, when they are manifesta
tions of the scrofulous poisons.
It is an excellent restorer of health and
strength in the Spring. By renewing the
appetite and vigor of the digestive organs,
it dissipates the depression and listless lan

appears, people feel better, and live longer,
for cleansing the blood. The system moves
on with renewed vigor and anew lease of
life.
