STANDARD AND EXPRESS; CARTERSVILLE, GA., JUNE 13, 1872. SUBSCRIPTION: TWO DOLLARS A YEAR, IN ADVANCE >VIT AM) 11l MOHr An old well In Illinois, that had been used for drowning surplus eats and dogs, was recently opened as a mineral spring. The young folks of Raleigh eat philopenas, the girls holding the al monds between their teeth and the young men biting them off. A law of Pennsylvania makes the taking of money at the door of a the ater on Sunday night illegal, where fore it is invariably taken at the win dow. The following congratulatory tele gram was received from Cincinnati by a wedding party: “ Congratulations on your nuptials. May your future troubles be only lit tle ones.” “ Wouldn’t you like to be a woman when you grow up?” “ No,” answered young four years old. “Why?” “ Because women can’t turn somer sets.” “ Cast Iron Sinks ” is the announce ment on the sign of a suburban plumb er. “ Well, who said it didn’t?” was the inquiry of a countryman, who read it over two or three times, and chuckled when he thought he saw the point. A woman in New York lately at tempted to hang herself, but several neighbors rushed in and cut her down before any harm was done; where upon the disgusted husband declared that Ajioino folks had better stay at homwp&nd n °t meddle with other folks’ affairs.” A man in an oblivious state took up his lodging on the pavement. He awoke next morning, and straighten ed himself up, looked on the ground upon which he had made his couch, and said: “ Well if I had a pickaxe, I would make up my bed.” Repeat the following sentence half a dozen times without making a mis take: “ Hobbs meets Snobbs and Nobbs; Hobbs bobs to (Snobbs and Nobbs; Hobbs nobs with Snobbs and robs Nobbs’ fobs. That’s, says Nobbs, is the worst for Hobbs’ fobs and Snobbs sobs-.” As the California earthquake ap proached, a young lady improved the opportunity to faint away in her lov er’s arms, it being the first time either had dared to establish such propinquity. She did not recover for twenty minutes or more, and the gen tleman took a vast oath on the mor row that he would “ give twenty-five dollars a shock for earthquakes.” A little five-year-old was being in structed in morals by his grandmoth er. The old lady told him that such Signs as “by golly,” “by jingo,” by thunder,” etc., were only little oaths, and but a little better than other profanities. In fact, said she, he could tell a profane oath by the prefix “by.” All such were oaths. “ Well, then, grandmother,” said the little hopeful, “is * by telegraph,’ which 1 see in the newspapers, swear ing?” “No,” said the old lady, “that’s only lying.” A doctor was summoned to a cot tage at Harwood, in England, and found a boy in need of his services. “Show your tongue,” said the doc tor. The boy stared like an owl. “My good boy, let me see your tongue,” repeated the doctor. “Talk: English, Dr.,” said the mother, and then turning to her son, said: “ Hopen thy gobler, and push out thy lolliker.” The mouth flew open, and the doc tor was terribly “ taken in.” “Only Your Pa and I.”—ln a certain town there had been a very exciting election for the office of sher iff. The successful candidate, of course, was very much elated, and at night was for a long time talking it over with his wife as they sat around the fire'before retiring. ' Meanwhile the youngsters in the trundle bed wore “all ears;” at length one tow head popped up under the inspira tion : “ Ma, are we all sheriffs, or only you and pa?” “ Lay down, you little fool,” snap ped the mother; “ only your pa and t.” Lemon Pie in Washington.—l am particularly fond of lemon pie for dessert. At I went on peacea bly for a couple of weeks, but always eating lemon pie under a silent pro test, for I was a stranger, and did not like to make objections. Finally I called a waiter and said: “ John, what kind of pie is this?” “ What kind did you order, sah ?” “ I ordered lemon pie, but this ap pears to be dried apple.” “ Dat’s lemon pie, sah. You know dey has a way of mixin’ dried apples in de lemon pie here, sah, to dat ex tent it requires a man of ability to ’stinguish ’em apart, sah. IX 4 lemons are scarce, you know, and dey has to ’conoinize ’em so as to make one lem on do for sixteen pies.” One of Jim Fisk’s Passes.—The conductor of the European and North American passenger train running between Lewiston and Mattawam keag, asked a fat, comfortable-look ing old fellow for his ticket the other night, when the old chap waved his hand benevolently, answered “Pass,” and spread himself over two seats again. He was quite indignant when the genial conductor asked to see the pass, and with much grumbling pull ed out of a wallet a freight receipt of the Sanford line of steamers, indors ed : “ Pleas Pass this Man if he Pays his fair if he donot Pait Y put him of. “ Not good unless countersigned by “ J. Fihke, Jr.” On being further questioned, the gentleman with a pass said he could not read writing very well, but did not doubt that his pass was good for an unlimited time over all the rail roads in the United States, as Jim Fisk gave it to him in Boston last summer, and he “ had traveled con siderable on it.” He paid his fair with no good grace, amt got off the cars swearing vengeance on the indi vidual who “sold” him the pass. The Pole Cat. —My friend did you ever examine the fragrant pole kat clussly ? I guess, not; they are a kritter that won’t bear examining with a naicro skone. Tney are butiful beings, but oh! how deceptive. Their habits are phew, but unique. They bild their houses out of earth, and the houses have but one door tew them, and that is a front door. When they enter their houses they don’t shut the door after them. They are called pole kats bekause it iz hot convenient tew kill them with a klub, but with a pole, and the longer the pole the more conve nient Writers on natral history, disagree about the right length ov the pole tew be used, but i would suggest that the pole be about 365 feet, especially if the wind is in favor ov the pole lrfl.fr.. • i" hav kaught skunks in a trap. They are easier tew git into a trap than t«w git out ov it. In taking them out ova trap grate judgment must be had not tew shake them up; the more yu shake them up the more ambrosial they am.
