TWO DOIXARS A YEAR, IN ADVANCE
WIT AM) HIM OK.
Salutation among the brewers—
“ Ale fellow well met.”
They say female compositors get
through their copy very rapidly, be
ing anxious to get the last word.
Mumps and railroad schemes are
said to he the prevailing diseases in
the capital of Maine this winter.
Coleridge tells of a man who had
such an overwhelming self-esteem,
that he never spoke of himself with
out taking off his hat.
A New Orleans paper says that a
young widow of that city, who writes
well, “is training herself for an edit
or.” Who is the editor she is train
ing for?
A minister not long ago preached
from the text, “ Be ye therefore stead
fast;” hut the printer made him ex
pound from “Be ye there for break
fast.”
“I can speak seven different lan
guages,” said a convict as he entered
a penitentiary. “No matter,” said
the keeper, “we have hut one lan
guage here, and hut very little of
Mamma (to naughty boy)—You
should always behave the same
whether you are in company or not.
Naughty Boy—Well, ma, why don’t
you behave the same as you do to
company, and press us to have anoth
er tart?
A young fellow at college wrote to
his uncle, on whom he entirely de
pended for support, “ My dear uncle,
ready for the needful. Your affec
tionate nephew.” The uncle re
plied, “ Dear nephew, the needful is
not ready. Your affectionate un
cle.”
A countryman in Savannah observ
ed a gang of negroes at work in the
streets, each wearing a ball and chain.
He asked one why that ball was
chained to his leg. “To keep people
from stealing it,” said the darkey,
“ heap of thieves about here.”
“People may say what they will
about country air being so good for
’em,” said Mrs. Partington, “and
how they fat upon it; for my part, I
think it’s owing to the vittlos. Air
may do for camomiles and other rep
tiles that live on it; but I know that
men must have some thing more sub
stantialler.”
Just now, they are having a joke
on a compositor who set up the toast,
“Woman—without her, man would
boa savage.,” and got the stops in
the wrong place, and produced the
following:
“Woman, without her man, would
be a savage.”
They say that his wife, who was
helping read the proof, discovered the
mistake.
“ C-c-can that p-p-pup-parrot talk ?”
asked a stuttering man of an Italian.
“ Suppose ho no can talk so much
better as that what you talk, I chop
ho head off,” was the reply.
Here is what they sing at public
school examinations in a Vermont
village, to the tune of “ Yanke Doo
dle,” visitors and all joining in the
chorus:
If any thing on earth can make
A great ami glorious nation,
It is to give the little ones
A thorough education.
Chorus— Five times live arc twenty-live,
Five times six are thirty,
Five times seven are thirty-five,
And live times eight are forty.
A pretty good story is told of a citi
zen of Elizabeth, N. J., who went to
the cars on Thanksgiving Day to see
his daughter off. Having secured a
seat for her, he left the car, and went
round to the window to say a parting
word. While he was passing out, tho
daughter left her seat to speak to a
friend, and, at the same time, a prim
looking lady who occupied the seat
with her moved up to the window.
Unaware of the important changes
inside { our venerable friend hastily
put his face up to the window, and
hurriedly exclaimed, “One morekias,
pet!”
In another instant, the point of a
blue cotton umbrella caught liis se
ductive lips, accompanied by the pas
sionate injunction: “ S’cat, you gray
headed wretch!”
“ I will preach from dat portion of
the Scripture dis evening,” said a
colored dominie, “ where the ’Postle
Paul pints his ’Pistle at the ’Phe
sians.”
A person was boasting that he
sprung from a high family.
“ Yes,” said a bystander, “ I have
seen some of the same family so high
that their feet could not touch the
ground .”
Walter, a five-year old, was sur
prised at breakfast by the presence of
a diminutive egg, served for his spe
cial delectation. He thus accounted
for the egg’s smallness:
41 Mamma, I think the chicken was
learning to lay.”
A young man in New 7 Jersey, just
out of his teens, went crazy because
his father forbade his marrying a fas
cinating tailoress forty years of age.—
Ex.
Pity he should go crazy pressing
his suit. He was certainly a goose.
Two friends meeting, one remark
ed:
44 1 have just met a man w r ho told
me I looked exactly like you.”
“ Tell me who it w r as, that I may
knock him dow 7 n,” replied his
friend.
“ Don’t trouble yourself,” said he,
“ I did that myself.”
CONOiDRIMS.
When is a lady not a lady ?—When
she is a little sulky.
What made Job sleep cold?—Be
cause he had such poor comforters.
When is a man over head and ears
in debt?—When he owes for his hat.
Why is the figure 9 like a peacock?
—Because it’s nothing without its
tail.
When was St. Paul a pastry cook ?
—When he went to Phiillippi—fill a
pie.
What did Adam first do when he
left the garden of Eden?—He raised
Cain.
When is a ship like a washerwo
man? —When she is laboring in the
water.
Why are some young ladies like
music books ?—Because they are full of
airs.
When did Moses sleep five in one
bed?—When he slept with his fore
fathers.
Why are the steam cars like a vision
in the night ?—Because they pass over
the sleepers.
How many apples did Eve eat,
and how many did Adam eat?—
Ans.—Eve ate (8) and Adam too
(2.)
Why are bakers like genteel va
grants?—Because they are the
bre(a)d spongers and loafers in exist
ence.
Why is the cheek-rein of a Horse
car like the human conscience ?—lt
is the inward check to the outer
man.
What is the difference between
Truth, and an Egg?—Truth when
crushed will rise again, and a Egg will
not.
Why is Gibralter one of the most
wonderful places in the world?—Be
cause it is always on the rock , but
never moves.
Why is a washerwoman one of the
silliest of women? —Because she sets
her tubs to catch soft water when it
rains hard.
Why is a five dollar bank note more
valuable than a five dollar gold piece?
—Because, when you put it in your
Surge you double it and when you take
; out it in-creases.

I # diseases of the Throat
and Lungs. A vast
I /ltla» § trial of its virtues,
ImHh,! throughout this and
iKluiy other countries, has
shown that it does
” surely and effectually
eontrol them. The testimony'of our best citi
zens, of all classes, establishes the fact, thst
Cheery Pectoral will and does relieve sad
ctfre the afflicting disorders of the Throat and
Lungs beyond any other medicine. The most
dangerous' affections of the Pulmonary Organs
yield to its power; and cases of Consump
tion, cured by this preparation, are public
ly known, so "remarkable os hardly to he be
lieved, were they not proven beyond dispute.
Asa remedy it is adequate, on which the publio
may rely for full protection. By curing Coughs,
the forerunners of more serious disease, it saves
unnumbered lives, and an amount of suffering
not to be computed. It challenges trial, and con
vinces the most sceptical. Every familv should
keep it on hand as a protection against the early
and unperceived attack of Pulmonary Affections,
which are easily met at first, but which become
incurable, and too often fatal, if neglected. Ten
der lungs need this defence; and it is unwise to
be without it Asa safeguard to children, amid
the distressing diseases which beset the Throat
and Chest of childhood, Cherry Pectoral
is invaluable; for, by its timely use, multi
tudes are rescued from premature graves, and
saved to the love and affection centred on them.
It acts speedily and surely against ordinary colds,
securing sound and health-restoring sleep. No
one will suffer troublesome lullueuza and pain
ful Bronchitis, when they know how easily
they can be cured.
Originally the product of long, laborious, and
successful chemical investigation, no cost or toil
is spared in making every bottle in the utmost
possible perfection. It may bo confidently re
lied upon as possessing all the virtues it has ever
exhibited, and capable of producing cures as
memorable as the greatest it has ever effected.

Ayer’s Ague Cure,
For Fever and Ague, Intermittent Fever,
Chill Fever, Remittent Fever, Dumb
Ague, Periodical or Bilious Fever, Ac.,
and indeed all tho affections which arise
from malarious, marsh, or miasmatio
poisons.
No one remedy is louder
H called lor by die necessities of
m the American people than a
sure and safe cure for Fever
BK 1 and Ague. Such we are now
enabled to offer, with a perfect
M certainty that it will eradioato
the disease, and with assur
ance, founded on proof, that no harm can ariso
from its use in any quantity.
That which protects from or prevents this dis
order must be of immense service in the com
munities where it prevails. Prevention is better
than cure, for the patient escapes the risk winch
he must run in violent attacks of this balefhl dis
temper. This “Cure” expels the miasmatic
poison of Fever and Ague from the system,
and prevents the development of the dlseasa, if
taken on the first approach of its premonitory
symptoms. It is not only the best remedy ever
yet discovered for this class of complaints, but
also the cheapest. Tho large quantity we sup
ply for a dollar brings it within the reach of
everybody; and in bilious districts, where
Fever and Ague prevails, everybody should
have it, and use it freely, both for cure and pro
tection. It Is hoped this price will place it within
the reach of all tho poor as well as the rich.
A great superiority ot tills remedy over any
other ever discovered for the speedy and certain
cure of Intermittents is, that it contains no Qui
nine or mineral; consequently it produces no
quinism or other injurious effects whatever upon
the constitution. Thoso cured by it are left as
healthy as if they had never had the disease.
Fever and Ague i.-i not alone the consequence
of the miasmatio poison. A great variety of dis
orders ariso from its irritation, among which
are Neuralgia, Itheumatism, Gout, Headache,
Blindness, Toothache, Earache, Catarrh, A*th"
ma, Palpitation, Painful Affection of the Spleen,
Hysterics, Pain in the Bowels, Colic, Paralysis,
and derangement of the Stomach, alt of which,
when originating in this cause, put on the in
termittent type, or become periodical. This
“Cure” expels the poison from the blood, and
consequently cures them all alike. It is an in
valuable protection to immigrants and persons
travelling or temporarily residing in the mala
rious districts. If taken occasionally or daily
while (exposed to the infection, that will be ex
creted from the system, and cannot accumulate
in sufficient quantity to ripen into disease.
Hence it is even more valuable for protection
than cure; and few will ever suffer from Inter
mittents if thev avail themselves of the protec
tion this remedy affords.
For Liver Complaints, arising from torpid
ity of the hirer, it is an excellent remedy, stim
ulating the Liver into healthy activity, and pro
ducing many truly remarkable cures, where
other medicines fad.
