CARTERBVILLE, OA. AUGUST 15, 1872
SUBSCRIPTION:
TWO DOLLARS A YEAR, IN ADVANCE
WIT ANI> union.
Moving for n new trial —popping
the question to Mrs. No. 2.
Have but few confidants, and the
fewer the better.
What can a man Lave in his pocket
when it’s empty ? A big hole.
When does a man have to keep
his word? When no one will take
it.
What is better than a promising
young man ? A paying one.
“ Doctor, is tight lacing injurious?”
“ Os corset is, Madam.’’
A quack doctor is usually remarka
ble for the size of his bill.
There’s one thing that ran always
bo found, and that’s fault.
The most dangerous flattery is that
which exhales from the presence of in
feriors.
The last thing seen by many people
who have come to violent deaths was
koro-sene.
liloggs had his nose palled, and was
asked by a friend to resent it. He said
he would next week.
A Dandy inquired of a fruit stall,
“ Are these apples fit for a hog to
eat?”
“ Try one and see,” replied the wo
man.
A bad marriago is like an electric
machine; it makes you dance, and you
can’t let go.
Life, like war, is a series of mistakes;
and he is the best who wins the most
splendid victories by the retrieval of
mistakes.
Why is a pretty, well-made, fashion
able girl like a thrifty housekeeper?
Because she makes a very great bustle
about a small waist.
The most striking difference be
tween a fool and a looking-glass is,
that the fool speaks without reflecting,
and the lookliug-glass reflects without
speaking.
An indignant orator, at a recent po
litical meeting, in refuting an oppo
nent, thundered out:
“ Mr. Chairman, I scorn the allega
tion, and I defy the alligator.
A Hartforder advised a slender
friend to chalk his head, and go to a
masquerade ball as billiard cue.
Tho most pitiable object on earth is
a man whoso wife wants to talk him
out of doing something.
By all means cultivate the habit of
saying tho most unpleasant things in
tho sweetest way; nothing like sugar
ing wormwood.
John Wesley used to say :
“ Ob, how hard it is to be shallow
enough for a genteel congregation.”
Ministers seem to have little difficul
ty of that kind in these days.
“ Tho whole thing has gone to the
bottomless pit,” said a gentleman of
an unforLunato speculation.
“Never mind,’’ responded his
friend; “it won’t be long before
you’ll have a chance to go thero after
it.”
A sexton, being very familiar with
a physician, was asked whether ho
had entered into partnership with
him.
“ O yes,” said ho, “ we’ve been to
gether for some time; I always carry
the doctor’s work homo wlmn it is
done.”
A young gentlemen recently created
quite a sensation while reading to a
circle cf young ladies a poetic effu
sion, “To a beautiful Belle,” by pro
nouncing the last word in two sylla
bles.
A negro held a cow while a cross
eyed man was to knock her on tho
head with an axe. Tho negro, observ
ing tho man’s eyes, in some fear in
quired :
“ You gwine to hit whar you look ?”
“ Yes.” •
“Den,” said Cuftee, “hold do cow
yourself. I ain’t gwine to let you hit
me.’’
They have anew way of getting up
surprfse parties. A person receives an
anonymous letter, stating that a sur
prise party will be with him on a cer
tain evening. He prepares for it. No
body comes, and the surprise is com
plete.
“ Papa, stand on that hearth,” said
a little trichnarian to his doting pa
rent, who objected that the hearth
would be scratched, and his mother
would not like it. “ Yes, papa, do ? I
wish you would.”
“ But why, my child ?” remonstrated
paterfamilias.
“ Because mamma’ll give you fits if
you do, and I want to see her.”
“ Papa,” said a little urchin to his
father the other day; “I saw a print
er go down the street just now.”
“Did you, sonny? How did you
know the person was a printer ?”
“ Because, I do, pa.”
“ But he might have been a carpen
ter, blacksmith or shoemaker.”
“ No, no, papa; he was a printer—
likely an editor—for he was gnawing
a bone and had no stockings on. The
crown was out of his hat and his ecat
was all torn. lam certain ho was a
printer.”
Jones and his wife agreo grandly on
one point; she thinks more of him than
of any body else in the world, and so
does he.
The ladies give as a reason for mar
rying for money that they so seldom
find any thing else in a man worth
having.
Two backsliders of the Shaker com
munity at Watervliet, 0., consummat
ed their backslidings aud were married
in Dayton on Wednesday.
If a young lady wishes a young
gentleman to kiss her what papers
would she mention ? No Spectator, no
Observer, but as many Times as you
please.
A pretty, bright little juvenile some
five years old, named Rose, was teased
a good deal by a gentleman who visit
ed the family. He finally wound up
by saying, “ Rosa, I don’t love you.”
“ But you’ve got to love me,” said
the child.
“ How so ?” said her tormentor.
« Why,’’ said Rosa, “ the Bible says
that you must love them that hate you,
and I am sure that I hate you!”
I gave her a rose and gave her a
ring, and asked her to marry me then;
but she sent them all back —the in
sensible thing—and said she’d no no
tion of men. I told her I had oceans
of money and goods—tried to frighten
her with a growl; but she answered
she wasn’t brought up in the woods, to
be scared by the screech of an owL
I called her a baggage and every thing
bad; I slighted her features and form;
till at length I succeded in getting
her mad, and she raged like the sea
in a storm. And then in a moment I
turned and smiled, and called her my
angel and all; she fell in my arms,
like a wearisome child, and exclaimed,
** We will marry this fall.”

intrinsic virtues, and sustained by its re
markable cures. So mild as to be safe and
beneficial to children, and yet so searching
as to effectually purge out the great cor

and syphilitic contamination. Impurities,
or diseases that have lurked in the system
for years, soon yield to this powerful anti

Female Weakness, Debility, and
Leucorrhoea, when they are manifesta

It is an excellent restorer of health and
strength in the Spring. By renewing the
appetite and vigor of the digestive organs,
it dissipates the depression and listless lan

for cleansing the blood. The system moves
