STANDARD AND EXPRESS CARTERSVILLE, OA. AUGUST 22, 1872. SUBSCRIPTION : TWO DOLLARS A YEAR, IN ADVANCE WIT AM) HUMOR. Master of Arts—A male flirt. A sound judge—A musical critic. “ Jimfiskkated’’ißthe Independent’s word for stolen. Boots are invariably soled before they are bought. Iced water should bo drank very sparingly, unless the ice is perfectly ripe. When a woman begins to drink her tea without sugar—that’s a symp tom. Farmers are like fowls—neither will get full crops without industry. A medical individual writes that h has seen a dead child in excellent spir its at the medical college. Fortune’s hand, says a poverty stricken writing-master, is remarkable for its heavy down strokes. The editress of a Western journal apologizes for the detention of her pa per, “ because of the arrival of au ex tra male.’’ When a woman begins to find fault with her looking-glass, and says it doesn’t show her features right—Lhat’s a symptom. Josh Billiugs says that opera music doesn’t have any more effect on him than castor oil would have on a graven image. A San Francisco man adveitises to pay “ a reasonable price” for Confed erate bonds, to the amount of $500,- 000. Some young men are a little partial to blue-eyed maidens. Others like durk-eyed lasses. But the mon-eyed girls have the most admirers. An Illinois editor has become so hollow from depending for subsistence on his paper that he advertises him self for a stovepipe, at three cents per foot. A Nashville paper sava there was never before such a glorious crop of pairs in that city as there has been this season. Nearly every front gate is loaded down with them on pleasant evenings. Nervous old lady (to deck-hand on steamboat) —“ Mr. Steamboatman, is there any fear of danger?” Deck hand (carelessly)—“Plenty of fear ma’am, but not a bit of danger.” •' Baggage smashers,’’ whoso must cles had commenced to wither, and whose hands had partially forgot their cunning in having nothing but “drum mers’’ valises to practice on, are now feeling more cheerful as tho rush to tho watering-places begius. A rural editor has lost his faith in tho luck of horso shoes. He nailed one over his door recently and that morning there came by mail three duns and seven stops, and a man call ed with a revolver to ask “ who wrote that article.” “ Vegetable pill!’’ exclaimed an old lady. “ Don’t talk to me of such stuff. Tho best vegetable pill made is an apple dumpliug; for destroying a gnawing in tho stomach there is noth ing like it; it always can be relied on. A modest bachelor says all he should ask iu a wife would be good temper, sound health, good understanding, agreeable physiognomy, pretty figure, good connections, domestic habits, re sources of amusement, good spirits, conversational talents, eJegmfc man ners, and money. About two years ago a Norwich town, Coun., gentleman received a mortal insult from a neighbor who lives a quarter of a mile or more from him. After two years’ meditation he has now purchased a peacock and a jackass and anchored them in a field adjoiuing his neighbor’s back yard. Asa wife was holding her husband’s aching head in her hands one morn ing, she quietly asked, “ Are man and his wife one “ I suppose so,” said the husband. “Then,” rejoined the wife, “ I came home last night drunk aud ought to be ashamed of myself.’ A colored mail carrier in Virginia was recently well shaken by a man for kicking his dog. “ Look a here, massa,” said he, “ you’d better be keerful how you shake dis chile; cos when you shake me you shakes de whole of de United States; I car ries de mails.” An editor wrote a leading article on the fair sex, in the course of which he said: “ Girls of seventeen and eigh teen are very fond of beaus.” When the paper was issued, he was rather shocked to discover that an unfortu nate typographical error had made him say: “Girls of seventeen or eigh teen are fond of beans. The building committee of a church callod upon a wealthy member of the congregation, soliciting a subscription towards anew house of worship. The sum he subscribed disappointed them, and they told him so at the same time intimating that Mr. J had given double the amount, “So he should,’’ said the wily gentleman, “he goes to church twice as much as I do.’’ A little girl of four summers was the happy recipient of a velvet cloak, of which she was very proud. One day, soon after, she was discussing her dresses, their beauty, style, etc., when her mother by way of nipping her vanity in the bud, said: “My dear,do you know there are more important things to talk of than dresses?” Quickly she replied: “Oh, yes, mam ma, velvet cloaks.” A country girl went to Fond du Lac the other day, and for the first time saw the immense appendage hung to the buck of anew fashion dress. She took a square look at it, and de termined to have one. So going into a store, she asked the clerk to show her some of his “ hump cloth.” The clerk was embarrassed, but after con sulting with the proprietor, the young lady got her hump cloth and departed happy. “ Gentlemen of the J ury,” said a Western lawyer, “ I don’t mean to in sinuate that this man is a covetous person, but I will bet five to one that if you should bait a steel trap with a new three cent piece, and place it with six inches of his mouth, you would catch his soul. I wouldn’t for a mo ment insinuate that he would steal; but may it please the court, and gen tlemen of the jury, I wouldn’t trust him in a room with red-hot mill stones and an angel to watch ern.’’ Old lady—Can you tell me, my good man, where I can find Mr. Jones? Pat —Sure, ma’am, I expect it would lie at his house you will find him. Lady—Does he live anywhere in this street? Pat—Sure, no, indade; it’s not for the like of him to be livin’ in the street at all. Lady—You stupid fellow, I mean what number does his family Btop at ? Pat—Now, ma’am, you have me; he has six boys and four girls, but whether be means to stop at that number, I can’t say. Lftdy—Oh. you blockhead ? Exit old lady in a tremor of indignation. Much \3T" serious sickness and suffering is prevent ed by their timely use; and every family should have them on hand for their protection and relief, when required. Long experience has proved them to be the saf est, surest, and best of all the Dills with which the market abounds. By their occasional use, the blood is purified, the corruptions of the sys tem expelled, obstructions removed, and the whole machinery of life restored to its healthy activity. Internal organs which become clogged and sluggish are cleansed by Ayer’s Dills, and stimulated into action. Thus incipient disease is changed into health, the value of which change, when reckoned on the vast multitudes who enjoy it, can hardly be computed. Their sugar coating makes them pleasant to take, and preserves their virtues unimpaired for any length of time, so that they are ever fresh, and perfectly reliable. Although searching, they are mild, and operate without disturbance to the constitution, or diet, or occupation. Full directions arc given on the wrapper to each box, how to use them as a Family Physic, and for the following complaints, which these Dills rapidly cure:— For I)yi|iep>ia or Indigeation, listleit. nru. Languor and S,oas of Appetite, they should be taken moderately to stimulate the stom ach, and restore its healthy tone and action. For Liver Complaint and its various symp toms, Bilious lleatluelie. Sick Uentl ache, Aanndite or tirren Sickness, Bil ious Colic and Bilious fevers, they should be judiciously taken for each case, to correct the diseased action or remove the obstructions which cause it. For Bysentery or Biarrlica, but one mild dose is generally required. For Bheumatism, Gout, Gravel, Pal pitation of the Heart, Pain in the hide, Back and l.oins, they should be contin uously taken, as required, to change the diseased action of the system. With such change those complaints disappear. For Dropsy and Bropsical Swellings, they should be taken in large and frequent doses to produce the effect of a drastic purge. For Suppression, a large dose should be taken, as it produces trie desired effect by sym pathy. Asa Dinner Dill, take one or two Pills to promote digestion and relieve the stomach. An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and bowels, restores the appetite, and invigorates the system. Hence it is often advantageous where no serious derangement exists. One who feels tolerably well, often finds that a dose of these Dills makes him feel decidedly better, from their cleansing and renovating effect on the digestive apparatus. PREPARED BY Dr. J. C.
